Biomagnetics: The Science Our Planet - the Earth is one of the largest natural sources of magnetic wave energy. Today we live and work in steel buildings or in houses with electrical energy flowing through them 24 hours and day, which limits the access to the planet's magnetic fields. Additionally, the earth's own magnetic field has been found to be decreasing at a significant rate - a total 50% decrease in the last 500 years (source: Dr. Kyoichi Nakagawa, MD, Director of Isuzu Hospital, Tokyo, Japan, "Magnetic Field Deficiency Syndrome and Magnetic Treatment", Japan Medical Journal, No 2475, 12/4/76). Science has also determined that the amount of available oxygen in our air has been lowered significantly. Combined, these two facts lead us to some interesting applications for Magnetic Therapy. These findings, by Dr. Nakagawa, suggest that this phenomenon may be the cause of many of today's ailments. Although discomfort, stiffness, stress, and fatigue are not considered illnesses, these conditions affect everyone today - both young and old. Clinical studies (i.e. Baylor University and others) have now proven that with the use of biomagnetics, these conditions may be improved. We welcome you to try for yourself. Are you tired of daily pain killers for knee pain, neck pain, sciatica, arthritis, bursitis, muscle pain, shoulder pain, tennis elbow, backpain. Then why not try magnetic therapy? The newest neodymium rare earth permanent magnets have helped millions and are used worldwide. A powerful magnet smaller than a penny placed near a pain or injury may do wonders for you and relieve your pain as many have experienced. The magnetic field produced by permanent magnets is a safe natural energy source. There are no known harmful exposure levels and no limitations by Governmental agencies. All Magnet Force magnets are of the highest energy neodymium rare earth and are identified, differentiating between south pole and north pole. SINCE THE EGYPTIANS The science and use of Magnetic Therapy has been known ever since Egyptian times, and has been continuously practiced all over the world. Because many Americans have been fed up with the ever burdening cost of medical care and its sometimes failures, it has forced them to look for alternative therapies for their aches and pains. A host of therapies have surfaced some old, some new. Chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, herbal, vitamins, biofeedback, homeopathy, and permanent magnetic are just a few therapies offered. Magnetic therapy has the most appeal, because of its effectiveness. It is a natural therapy, non toxic, no pills, no needles, no salves, no side effects and most important, a one time low cost for everyone. Magnetic therapy, when coupled with

A new study confirms that magnetic insoles can provide significant relief to diabetics who suffer from severe numbness and tingling in the feet. Ninety percent of the patients who wore the magnetic insoles around the clock experienced significant relief. Diabetic patients who attached small magnetized pads to their feet were able to diminish the foot pain and numbness that afflicts so many people who have diabetes. The small but well-controlled trial (American Journal of Pain Management, Jan. 1999) is one of the first rigorous studies to show the potential benefits of magnets, a hugely popular, but controversial, form of therapy. The Effect of Magnet Therapy on Fibromyalgia Pain A recent study reported in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine studied the effect of magnet therapy on fibromyalgia pain. The results of the study, although inconclusive, show that magnet therapy reduced fibromyalgia pain intensity enough in one group of study participants to be "clinically meaningful" the researchers reported. This recent study, conducted by researchers at the University of Virginia studied results from 94 patients who were suffering from fibromyalgia and were randomly divided into 4 groups. Half of these patients were in 2 control groups, one that received fake magnets and the other that just followed their treatment routine as usual. The other 2 groups received active magnetic pads; one which provided whole body exposure to a uniform magnetic field and the other group used a pad which exposed the subjects to a magnetic field that varied both spatially and in polarity. The study tracked results over a six month periods. The two groups that slept on pads with active magnets generally showed improvement in number of tender points on the body and in outcome

scores of pain intensity level, as well as functional status at the end of the six month test. The control group subjects did not exhibit the same type of improvement in their symptoms. Magnetotherapy, It Can Help You by Ken Wiancko, MD Conventional medicine has long opposed "alternative" treatment techniques. With many of these, although they provide benefits to those using them, their mode of action was unexplained scientifically. Magneto therapy (treatment of illness with magnetic current) has been extensively researched and the physiology of its benefits documented. Life developed under the influence of the earth's geomagnetic field. Although this field is relatively small, it plays a major role in many bodily functions. All tissues of the body and nervous system carry electromagnetic charges. These in turn react to magnetic fields. Cell regulation is governed by electromagnetic currents of the body. The body itself creates a magnetic field (termed bio-magnetism) which can be measured by sensitive magnetometers. In disease states these body electromagnetic potentials are altered and again are measurable. The effects of magnetics on the body is called magneto-biology, the subject of this article. Magnets province material. magnets interest. have been used for healing for thousands of years. The term magnet comes from Magnesia, a in Asia Minor, where ancient Greeks discovered the rock, Magnetite, that attracted ferrous These people, and early Chinese, recorded its use in their medical literature. Medical use of has been reported throughout the ages, as, in recent years, been the subject of world wide

Dr. Nakagawa (Japanese Medical Journal #2745) in his paper, "Magnetic Field Deficiency Syndrome and Magnetic Treatment" outlines the problems of the lack of magnetism on the human. He believes the body is under the influence of the earth's magnetic field and is kept in balance in relationship to it. Under modem living conditions this field is decreased by shielding of steel frame buildings, automobiles, etc. Also, the earth's magnetic field has deteriorated 50% in the last 1000 years adding to the deficiency of magnetic force on the body. Lack of magnetism can cause abnormalities as stress, headaches, arthritis, muscle pain, the chronic fatigue syndrome, and even allergies. Space research by US and Russia has shown that the loss of calcium form the bone (osteoporosis) in astronauts is due to the lack of magnetic field action on the body in space. Magneto-therapy has many other forms. Application of electromagnetic current to non-unioned fractures often results in healing that has resisted all standard treatment. European studies have shown benefits of permanent magnetic and low frequency pulsed magnetic therapy for asthma, hypertension, heart attacks, varicose ulcers, arthritis, and rheumatism. Newly developed units help control stress and prevent jet lag ("Stressmaster"), control insomnia and anxiety ("Neuron One"), and offer nonpharmaceutical pain relief ("Psychotron Delphi"). Life and the body have been looked upon as a mechanical model functioning with a chemical internal environment. Treatment has been undertaken with this same mechanical-chemical theory. It is now starting to be appreciated that health and disease, in many cases, depend on our body's electromagnetic balance. Dr. Wiancko is a practicing surgeon with an increasing interest in bio-magnetics and magneto-therapy.

Study confirms healing power of magnets This story aired on NBC Nightly News Jan 6, 1999 New York, Jan. 6 - Last year, a study found that magnetic insoles seemed to provide significant relief to diabetics who suffered from a painful condition called peripheral neuropathy. However, that study was not well designed scientifically. A new study confirms the apparent benefit of magnets for diabetics. Its a test that measures how well nerves are conducting signals from the feet. And the results for Jeanette Castner show that her diabetes has, in fact, damaged those nerves. In her case it has made her feet extremely numb, which is much more serious than it sounds. All of a sudden, you would see blood, because you had a blister, you dont feel that at all. I did lose a toe because of that, Castner said. The problem is called diabetic neuropathy, and it is a major disabler of people with diabetes. According to Dr. Michael Weintraub of New York Medical College, You can have numbness and tingling like your feet are asleep, or numb or tingling or burning to the point where you cant even put pressure on them. But Castner and other diabetics have gotten significant relief from their neuropathy by using an ancient alternative treatment magnets. Nineteen patients in a well-designed scientific study published Wednesday in the American Journal of Pain Management wore magnetic insoles 24-hours a day except while showering. They then rated their

10

pain twice a day for four months. The trick was making sure that the pain relief was really due to the magnets. I created a design to have the patient test one foot as a control against a real magnet in the other foot, and then after one month, switch them so in the other month they would have a magnet in the opposite foot and a sham magnet or a sham device on the other foot, so they would not know which ones they were, Dr. Weintraub explained. Both the foot with the fake and the real magnet got some pain relief but when they were switched to real magnets, 90 percent of the diabetics got significantly better from their neuropathy. Castner said, Since the magnetic chips, its ironic how I dont I still have numbness, but its decreased. As to why magnets seem to work, there are a few theories, but the bottom line is that no one really knows. Curiously, the magnetic insoles dont work as well on foot pain from causes other than diabetes, such as alcohol abuse. Again, doctors are not sure why. To better understand the benefits of magnet therapy, Dr. Weintraub is setting up a national multi-center trial, but in the meantime, theres little downside to giving magnets a try.

he Positive Benefits of BioMagnetics by Dr. William Pawluk, MD, MSc. The human body floats in a sea of magnetic fields--those of the earth, moon, sun, and other galactic fields. The body is full of magnetic materials. Every cell and atom of the body is a small magnetic dynamo. The body's fields, which are very tiny, are measured in devices called SQUIDS. The earth's field is 100,000 times or more stronger than the body's! We are so dependent on the earth's fields that astronauts in space for long periods require artificial magnetic fields to maintain health. Magnetic fields penetrate the body as if it were air. Nothing in the body stands in the way of a magnetic field. The body is 70% or more water, which doesn't reduce or block magnetic fields. A strong magnet held on one side of the hand can easily deflect a compass needle on the other side of the same hand. SQUIDS show that tissues exposed to magnets have enhanced magnetic signals afterward for some time. Various types of magnets produce these effects. They include permanent magnets, such as flat magnetic pads and electromagnets of various kinds, such as MRI machines and nerve conduction testing devices. Some acupuncturists use permanent magnets because they are painless and allow treatment to continue after a visit. While a student in acupuncture, I was experimenting on myself with two of the most powerful acupuncture magnets available. In two separate trials, I felt an obvious buzzing sensation in my chest and abdomen. By chance I stimulated two acupuncture meridians! This proved that magnets significantly affect acupuncture points and meridians. I also worked with a physician friend who owns some

12

sensitive electrical testing equipment. We were able to show that magnets increase the energy (chi) flow along a hand meridian. In my practice, I now frequently replace needles for magnets. Magnetics act on the body in many ways:

They stimulate the acupuncture points and meridians. In this way, they can be used for all kinds of problems, especially for pain, fibromyalgia and muscle strains. They work on red blood cells because they contain iron. I placed a round bulls eye magnet on a nurse's knee bruise following a ski injury. The next morning she had a perfect bulls eye pattern over her bruise! Most people report warmth and gentle tingling under the magnets. Europeans have measured increased blood flow. Others have seen this on thermograms too. They affect some chemical processes within and between cells. Chemists use sensitive magnetic equipment to measure simple and complex molecules. Researchers at Harvard found that salt water passes a membrane quicker with a magnetic field. They can affect nerve signals. High strength magnets can cause anesthesia, through a principle in physics called the Hall effect. Dr. Robert Becker (author of Body Electric) put salamanders to sleep before surgery with electromagnets more safely than anesthetics. Magnets can stop epileptic seizures. They are also used to study and map nerve structures deep in the brain, normally only accessible during brain surgery.

I hope the above has helped to inform you about the exciting new field of biomagnetics which has great potential to help people. We are clearly seeing a new day in medical
