Craniocean: Good question. If you upload work you own the copyright to, but you want people to be able to legally share the work with others, you can apply one of these licenses.
How would anyone who uploads original work to Scribd benefit, JG, when already under copyright

I, too, have been writing and publishing for years and yet I found "Creative Commons Spectrum of Rights" more clear and understandable than other documents I've read on publishing rights and licenses. Thanks for pointing out this enjoyable and informative document!
