Second Life: AVirtual Reality
History of Internet:
Internet is a worldwide system of interconnected computer networks.ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) highlights theorigin of Internet which was a network of computers under the USDepartment of Defence in 1969. The network (funded by the government)was used as a research tool more than a service provider because theindustry did not see it as a probable Business. However experts likeLeonard Kleinrock had visualised in 1962 and said “I foresee that theInternet will essentially be an invisible global infrastructure serving as aglobal nervous system for the people and processes of this planet”(Klei
i
nrock, 2005, pp. 4-5). As of today Internet helps connect millions of computers all around the world and is not just a technologicaldevelopment but the result of social and political processes, linking boththe intellectual world and the administration. It was the 1990’s when internet’s usage was defined by theintroduction of the World Wide Web project, followed by the creation of HTML and HTTP. During the 1990’s, it was estimated that the Internetgrew by 100% per year, with a brief period of erratic growth in 1996 and1997.
Businesses on the net:
Internet is used as a platform for communicating, promoting, selling, buying of goods and services. Commerce on the internet is known by afew other names, such as E-business, E-retailing, E-commerce, etc.Several businesses like airline ticketing, online book stores, online

merchandizing, etc are available on the Internet. Over time Internet haschanged the way people do business and communicate with each other.Internet marketing revenues were reported at $1.92 billion, surpassingreported revenues of outdoor advertising and positioning Internet withinthe role of the conventional media outlets. Specific to photographers, theinternet has become an important tool for them as it enables images to betransmitted, displayed and downloaded to computers extremely rapidly.Photography on the Internet is possible because scanners have beendeveloped to capture images electronically. Photographers nowadays usethe internet to showcase ones work through online galleries, etc. Thepopularity of web-based diaries and writings (weblogs or blogs) has led tocollections of images posted as photo journals.
Future of the Internet:
In the future practically every Internet-connected gadget will correspondwirelessly. Low-power radio cells rather than fibre or copper wire, willconnect and transmit information. Before 2010, more than half of American homes will have at least one low power radio cell connected toInternet bandwidth. The future appears to hold a wireless Internetbecause of bandwidth trouble with cable or wire. The personal computerwill continue to evolve, but there will be a lot of other Internet-smartappliances. Most automobiles will have internal connectivity and simplycarry a very large cache of desired music, interactive games, and pictures, while passengers will have the choice of looking out the window at thereal world or looking in the window of their in-car display. People are juststarting to realize the full impact of the Internet on information, space, and time. In time every aspect related to business and service will useInternet as a tool to grow into the society.
