HOLIDAY CROATIA STYLE
BLUE FLAGS FOR 115 BEACHES AND 20 MARINAS IN CROATIA
Almost a month on from the Black Sea Asso-ciation of National News Agencies reporting thatbathing conditions are deemed “good” at 16 of the beaches along the Croatian coast and “satis-factory” at nine, there is more good news for thecountry. There are now more reasons to head ona Croatia vacation because the Croatian Times hasreported that the Balkan nation has been given115 Blue Flags for beaches and 20 Blue Flags formarinas. Coastal attractions had to meet variousenvironmental and security criteria to achievesuch an accolade, which indicates that many of Croatia’s popular holiday spots are held in highregard by the authorities. Despite being down tenper cent on last year due to economical issues andnot ecological reasons, the Blue Flag total is a si-gnificant number. Some 3,338 beaches and mari-nas across Europe, North Africa and beyond havebeen presented with Blue Flags this year.People on a Croatia travel trip this summer, as well as locals looking for a good time, will be ableaccess so-called disco trains between Zagreb andSplit from this week. Travelling from the capital ci-ty to the popular Dalmatia holiday destination, theservice will provide passengers with refreshments, entertainment and - as the name suggests - discomusic. Anyone on a holiday in Croatia between July 3rd and August 22nd will be able to buy ticketsfor the Croatian Railways route. This year, theproject is being supported by Croatian telecom-munications services provider T-HT. Vesna Maric,an author involved with the Lonely Planet Croatiatravel guide books, recently recommended Splitas a vacation destination, saying it has good nigh-tlife, a number of historic attractions and is closeto the Dalmatia islands. She said that the city is a“beautiful place” to visit, but is often overlookedby holidaymakers. A vacation in Croatia is an attractive op-tion for a number of reasons, accordingto one of the authors of the Lonely PlanetCroatia travel guide books. Vesna Maricexplained that the country has “a lot of tra-dition”, thanks to its mix of Mediterraneanand Slavic cultures and lack of big resortsoften found in other holiday destinationson the Med. Other benefits from a Croatiatravel trip, she said, include the fact it isstill “relatively unexplored” - although itis getting increasingly popular. “The seais fantastic, it is very family friendly. Thepeak season is for a limited time and formost of the year it is lovely and not socrowded, [plus] it is comparatively cheapcompared to any western destination,” MsMaric commented. Croatia’s food and wi-ne production - as well as its selection of natural parks, lakes and mountains - werealso commended. On the subject of wine, people on an Istria vacation last weekend would have been able to get involved inthe Festival of East Istrian Wine, whichshowcased the local drink to visitors. The Croatian anti-smoking associati-on “Bez dima” (No Smoke) has issuedan open letter in response to bar and re-staurant owners’ opposition to the newanti-smoking law. The Croatian Resta-urant Association has claimed bars andrestaurants have lost 70-to-80 per cent of their business because of the law, whichentered into force in May. The associati-on has recommended the Austrian modelof solving smoking problems that givesbar and restaurant proprietors the rightto decide whether their establishments will be smoking or non-smoking places of business. Bez dima is claiming the asso-ciation is trying to deceive the public be-cause Croatia has had the equivalent of the Austrian model for the last 10 yearsand no restaurant or bar owner has de-cided to ban smoking. Bez dima is char-ging that bar and restaurant proprietorssimply want nothing more than “a per-mit for smoking,” which is unethical. Bezdima is calling on Croats to think twicebefore signing the Croatian Restaurant Association’s petition against the anti-smoking law and preparing to return tostinky, smoky and fusty bars. Bez dima isalso criticising the media for neglecting tomention the positive impact of the law.Croatia has been awarded 115 BlueFlags for beaches and 20 Blue Flagsfor marinas this year. To get the exc-lusive eco-label Blue Flag, a beach ormarina has to meet ecological, educa-tional, security and service standards. The Blue Flag Programme is ownedand run by the independent non-profit organisation Foundation forEnvironmental Education (FEE). Theprogramme is an international pro- ject started by the EU Council in 1981.Croatia has ten-per-cent fewer BlueFlags this year, but that is because of recession, not ecological issues. Beca-use of lack of money, there were fewerapplications for Blue Flags this year.‘Lijepa Nasa’ (Our Beautiful Land)association head Ante Kutle said to-day (Weds) a Blue Flag was importantto many tourists when they choosetheir summer-holiday destination, the daily Vjesnik has reported. Kutlesaid: “Last year, Croatia received 145Blue Flags for beaches and marinasthat ranked it seventh on the worldlist.” The Blue Flag was awarded thisyear to a total of 3,338 beaches andmarinas in various countries.
