Traditional Worship in the Sanctuary

WOLF TRACKS
When I arrived back in July and we began to work out a format for our 11 oclock Service, I discerned that an important part of that living worship service would be its ministry of prayer: intercessory prayer, and prayers for healing including the ancient Christian practice of laying on of hands. These are powerful practices through which God has transformed lives for centuries, and it is with joy that people of Christ are rediscovering worship patterns that blessed the ancient Church. The subject of healing prayer is one, however, which makes no small number of United Methodists uncomfortable. With those folks in mind Id like to share with you the illuminative introduction to the section on Healing Services and Prayers found in our United Methodist Book of Worship. S c r i p t u r e s t r o n gl y affirms ministries of spiritual healing, which in recent years have received renewed emphasis throughout Christs holy Church. The root of the word healing in New Testament Greek, sozo, is the same as that of salvation and wholeness. Spiritual healing is Gods work of offering persons balance, harmony, and wholeness of body, mind, spirit, and relationships through confession, forgiveness and reconciliation. Through such healing, God works to bring about reconciliation between God and humanity, among individuals and communities, within each person, and between humanity and the rest of creation. The New Testament records that Jesus himself healed the estranged and sick and sent

out his disciples on ministries of healing. James (5:14-16a) calls us also to pray for and anoint the sick, that they may be healed. All healing is of God. The Churchs healing ministry in no way detracts from the gifts God gives through medicine and psychotherapy. It is no substitute for either medicine or the proper care of ones health. Rather, it adds to our total resources for wholeness. Healing is not magic, but underlying it is the great mystery of Gods love. Those who minister spiritual healing are channels of Gods love. Although no one can predict what will happen in a given instance, many marvelous healings have taken place.

God does not promise that we shall be spared suffering but does promise to be with us in our suffering. Trusting that promise, we are enabled to recognize Gods sustaining presence in pain, s i c kn e s s , i nj ur y a n d estrangement. Likewise, God does not promise that we will be cured of all illnesses; and we all must face the inevitability of death. A Service of Healing is not necessarily a service of curing, but it provides an atmosphere in which healing can happen. The greatest healing of all is the reunion of reconciliation of a human being with God. When this happens, physical healing sometimes occurs, mental and emotional balance is often restored, spiritual health is enhanced, and relationships are healed. For the Christian the basic purpose of spiritual healing

is to renew and strengthen ones relationship with the living Christ. Laying on of hands, anointing with oil, and the less formal gesture of holding someones hand all show the power of touch, which plays a central role in the healings recorded in the New Testament. Jesus often touched others--blessing children, washing feet, healing injuries or disease, and raising people from death. Biblical precedent combines with our natural desire to reach out to persons in need in prompting us to touch gently and lovingly those who ask for healing prayers. Such an act is a tangible expression of the presence of the healing Christ, working in and through those who minister in his name. What prompted me to share this excerpt was one

of those marvelous healings the writer mentions can happen when Gods love is channeled through prayer. Weve been praying for Faye Rubows Aunt Cherie. She had cancer. Last week her doctors told her her tumors had disappeared, they were gone, they were nowhere to be found in her scans anymore. When Faye shared that with us last Sunday, we were filled with praise and thanksgiving, humbled and elated all at once. God calls us to pray and assures us that when we pray, good things happen. It was true 2000 years ago. It is true today. Thanks be to God! Grace and peace, Pastor Paul

Joy in Generosity
October is generally considered Stewardship month at FUMC. This years Stewardship theme is Joy Joy in Generosity. Generosity As parishioners today we are experiencing the Joy Joy in Generosity of those saints that have gone before us. John Wesley urged those in connection with him to Earn all you can and save all you can, so that you can give all you can. Today, we United Methodist join others to help all of Gods children whenever and wherever we can. Through our congregation, we are the heart, spirit, and hands of Gods outreaching love. Life grows here through the joy of generosity. generosity Be in prayerful consideration of our time, talent, and economic resources as we enter this season of stewardship.

Better Than Einstein

At the conclusion of the sermon, the worshipers filed out of the sanctuary to greet the minister. As one of them left, he shook the minister's hand, thanked him for the sermon and said, "Thanks for the message, Reverend. You know, you must be smarter than Einstein." Beaming with pride, the minister said, "Why, thank you, brother!" As the week went by, the minister began to think about the man's compliment. The more he thought, the more he became baffled as to why anyone would deem him smarter than Einstein. So he decided to ask the man the following Sunday. The next Sunday he asked the parishioner if he remembered the previous Sunday's comment about the sermon. The parishioner replied that he did. The minister asked: "Exactly what did you mean that I must be smarter than Einstein?" The man replied, "Well, Reverend, they say that Einstein was so smart that only ten people in the entire world could understand him. But Reverend, no one can understand you."
