Dear Reader,
Do you feel boxed in by “choice” on the issue ofabortion? It’s no wonder given the way shallow rheto-ric is used to mask the reality of the issue. In the fol-lowing pages, we’d like to take you beyond the word“Choice.” It’s time to free your mind—it’s time to stepoutside the “Choice” box.Newsflash: It’s okay to be against abortion and youshould never be ashamed to admit it! Being opposed to abortion does not mean you are anti “choice.” Itusually means you are all about freedom, so much so that you happen to think all existing persons, big, small and really small, should be allowed to enjoy it.The word “choice,” used as the battle cry forabsolute unlimited legal abortions, makes a mockeryof true liberty. Why disguise the fact that the subjectmatter is abortion? Why? Plain and simple, because elective abortionis naturally repulsive and no one likes to contemplateit, much less partake in it or defend it. Countlessnumbers attest to the fact that abortion has painfullybackfired on women, men and families since it waslegalized in 1973.The information in this supplement could help yousave a life. With approximately 3,500 surgical abor- tions being performed every day in the United States, you probably know someone who has been or will beinvolved in an abortion. If you or a friend is facing anunexpected pregnancy, gather all the information youcan—this supplement will get you started. You willnever regret thinking outside the box!
Boxed in by “Choice”?

“Tim, I think I’m pregnant.” It wasNew Year’s Eve. My boyfriend sigheddeeply, his gaze remaining fixed on theTV. He then muttered something thatmade me feel already deserted. I felt asour lump in the back of my throat.Yes, I was pregnant, and I was scared!I knew from firsthand experiencehow tough it is raising a child as a sin-gle mother. I already had a 2-year olddaughter, Jennifer, from an earlierunsuccessful marriage. When my preg-nancy was confirmed, Tim’s non-com-mittal response to my distress and hismove to Chicago, 400 miles away, leftme despondent and convinced thatabortion was the “easy way out.” Iwas already struggling financially withone child. How could I raise two?I felt desperately alone. I often criedmyself to sleep. I decided to confide ina couple of college professors whocollected money to fly me out of townto have an abortion. Now I was obli-gated to go through with it. Still, Iagonized!I was summoned to the room wherethe abortions are performed. I couldhear a woman sobbing hysterically inthe recovery room. That memoryhaunts me still. As the doctor was examining me,prior to performing the abortion, hesuddenly stopped and said to thenurse, “Get her out of here! She’s toofar along!” Relief instantly washedover me! How odd! I had thought Iwanted an abortion but now feltinstantly relieved to know I was stillpregnant.I decided to use every ounceof courage I could muster todeal with my pregnancy. Myambivalence turned into love formy unborn daughter, Melanie. It took energy and creativityto support the three of us.During the first year ofMelanie’s life, she attendedclasses with me. When mydaughters were preschool ageand in daycare, Iobtained a jobas bookkeeper for the daycarecenter they attended. If theyneeded a hug, they could come intomy office and get one. Other means ofsupport included: Renting rooms tostudents; teaching evening classes atthe community college; and operatinga typing business out of the diningroom of my student housing which, again, enabled me to be with my chil-dren while working. My two daughters inspired me to dogreat things. They never stood in theway of my career. I finished mydegree; then I went on to get myMaster’s and Ph.D. Besides being aproud mother, I am happily married, apublished author, a motivationalspeaker, and a part-time musician. When we endure something tough, our character and self-esteem arestrengthened. Many women who haveconfessed to me that they’ve hadabortions have discovered that the“easy way out” is just an illusion. Some are in abusive relationships. Some are on anti-depressants. Othersjust seem detached from life. Somesadly remember their aborted child’s“would be” birthday each year.I cannot promise that it will beeasy. I can only promise that theanguish will pass and there are peoplewho will help you through this tryingtime. One day you will look back onthe birth of your child, and know thatyou did the right thing.Sincerely,Dr. Angela Woodhull
