Introduction
IT departments are making a move to virtualization likenever beore. Developers have come to learn how muchmore eciently they can work in virtual environments, and management is pushing virtualization with costsavings and an improved environmental image in mind.Furthermore, recent trends in IT have caused server anddesktop “sprawl”as hardware prices continue to drop. What many ail to realize is that the long-term cost o owning more hardware is many times larger than theinitial purchase price. Virtualization alleviates that problemby reducing the number o physical computers in anenvironment. With several ree or very inexpensive optionsavailable, even environments with only a single server or workstation are realizing the benets o virtualization. For those less concerned with the technical aspects, theact that virtualization can be a signicant part o any “Go Green”initiative creates additional interest. For someor all o these reasons, virtualization has recently becomean important option or many organizations.
1. Understanding Virtualization
So you’ve heard o virtualization and maybe even heardhow much it can help your organization, but whatexactly is it and how does it work? While the term“virtualization”can reer to several dierent technologiesand/or implementations, the most common use reers tothe employment o virtual machines, which are sotwareimplementations o a computer. A single physical computercan run one or more virtual machines, each with its ownoperating system and set o applications. Each virtualmachine is not only isolated rom the physical computer, but rom other virtual machines as well.To create a virtual machine, an additional level o sotwareis introduced to the physical computer. Technically, thissotware is reerred to as a hypervisor or Virtual MachineMonitor (VMM). This hypervisor is responsible or

virtualization tasks such as emulating virtual hardware, and passing I/O requests—such as network trac—romthe virtual machine to the physical machine. In essence,a single set o hardware is acting as i it were multiplephysical entities rom both a user interace perspectiveand or all network communications. Ater installing a hypervisor on the physical machine, virtual machines may be created. Virtual machines existas a group o virtual components, much like a physicalcomputer is composed o physical components. Those virtual components may include devices such as a virtualmotherboard, hard disk, video adapter, network adapterand sound card. In addition, some hypervisors supportadvanced hardware such as USB devices and multiple virtual CPUs. Typically, virtual machines are created roma management tool provided by the vendor where someo these virtual components may be adjusted. For example, you may adjust the amount o virtual machine memory, how large the virtual hard disk is and even how many virtualnetwork adapters are installed in the virtual machine. Oncethe virtual hardware has been created, an operating systemis loaded into the virtual machine ater which applicationsand services can be installed and congured.
1.1 Hypervisors
Hypervisors come in two general orms, hosted andnative. Hosted hypervisors are essentially applicationsthat are loaded on a standard operating system andbehave much like any other application. These are useul when you want to maintain a standard operating environment but leverage specic virtualization eatures. These types o solutions are requently used or development, testing, training and light server consolidation.
