The Chalice
A publication of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)201 East Second Street , Edmond Oklahoma 73034
 Vol. 1 No. 2 July 9, 2009
There are two very important lifeprinciples in this week’s Gospel lesson(Mark 6:1-13, 30-32): integrity andaccountability. The disciples, calledapostles for the only time by Mark, have been sent out on a shortmission trip. We don’t know howlong they were gone, nor what theyaccomplished. We only have a shortsummary of their activity. With themost limited of provisions, theysustained themselves, lived the faith, preached often, anointed the sick, and exorcized demons. Now they areback and giving a report about allthey have “done and taught” (Mark 6:30). They have been responsible

Fall Habitat Unity Build Set
Help Raise Funds!
Most everyone knows about the ministry and work of Habitat for Humanity. In recognition of the200th Anniversary of Thomas Campbell’s Address and Declaration, churches from the Stone-Campbell movement (Disciples of Christ, Independent Christian Churches, and Churches of Christ) in Central Oklahoma are uniting to build a Habitat for Humanity home at Hope Crossing,N.E. 63rd and Kelly. The build is scheduled for September 26 through October 17, 2009.During the month of July, you can help fund the build.
Pick up a “Habitat Bank”
on Sunday, then save and donate the amount of money normally spent on coffee, tea, sodas, and snacks during a given day. If you spend only $2 a day for such treats, in one month you will have more than enoughmoney to pay for one square foot of the Habitat Home ($57/square foot). If you prefer you can make a check payable to FCCand mark Habitat Build on the memo line. Please know a Habitat Home is not free. The person or family who will live in the home pays for the actual cost of that home, but interest free. The purchaser also provides 300 hours of sweat equity and attend homeowner classes beforethe purchase. Home owners are carefully screened by the staff of Habitat for Humanity.
With Our Appreciation, Your Outreach Ministry Team
to the mission, and now they are beingresponsible to one another. As the disciples of this age—thechosen—the called, we too are sentforth with the mission and work of Christ. We are baptized into the faithand ordained for the ministries of kindness, compassion, and care. Weare the voice-box of the Savior, thehands of the Almighty, and the imple-ments of the Holy Spirit. Living andserving with integrity is essential to theKingdom, as is our accountability—toGod and one another. But, this ministry is demanding. It’sexhaustive. So in our Gospel lesson,Jesus is taking the disciples away fromthe crowds for a little rest—a littlepeace and quiet. The words of a contemporary songsay it well: “When it’s all been said anddone, there is just one thing thatmatters. Did I do my best to live fortruth; did I live my life for you?” (JimCowan). But, to live that life, we toomust have some time for rest andrenewal.May God grant that we are faithfulto our mission, responsible to oneanother, and intentional with our time toreplenish; for that too is about integrityand accountability.
