 I
NTRODUCTION

This may be a strange question, but it’s one that should be addressed, because asthe old saying goes, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” It’s somewhatimpossible to completely and accurately define clutter in concrete terms that notonly can everyone agree on, but that is equally applicable to everyone as well.In other words, what may seem like clutter to one person may feel warm andcomforting to another person. And a so-called uncluttered home may feel tosome to be cold and sterile, lacking in personality and style. So what really defines clutter, and more importantly, how is it tied in with theconcept of feng shui? And, why can we so confidently say that clutter is the biggest enemy to good fengshui?
W
HAT IS CLUTTER
?
The dictionary defines the noun clutter as:

A confused or disordered state or collection; a jumble:
sorted through theclutter in the attic
.

A confused noise; a clatter. The word clutter can also be used as a verb; when someone adds to this mess orconfusion, they’re said to “clutter up” a space or a situation. So we see the tie-in between clutter and confusion in both instances, whether it’sphysical clutter or clutter as it applies to noise. And, in both cases, the definitionrefers to things that are unnecessary and overrun. A “jumble” wouldn’t refer to acollection of things that is modest in size or number, instead, it means just plainfar too many of any one thing. This is where there is a distinction between clutter and one’s prized possessions. It’s not really and truly the things themselves that define something as clutter ornot, it’s how they are kept or arranged.

HE ILLUSTRATION OF A CLUTTERED DESK

Think of it this way. Imagine in your mind a “cluttered desk.” What do you see?Probably stacks of papers and envelopes, files and folders, pens and pencils, paper clips and other such small items, maybe Post-It notes attached to variouscorners, and so on. There may also be phone logs and messages, invoices andother business forms, and the like. With that picture in your mind, ask yourself, what does the person who sits atthis desk actually do here? Can you tell from the papers and other items whetheror not they pay bills, write novels, design greeting cards, or if they’re an architect,a doctor, an engineer, or anything else about them? How would a person be able to easily find something in particular on that desk?If you were told to get this month’s phone bill, how quickly and easily could youfind that? Chances are you would have to dig a little to get what you need. Now, if you were someone who needed to work at that desk, how do you know how many months worth of phone bills you’ve recently paid, or still owe? Can you quickly and easily find the paid bills or check stubs or receipts?Perhaps the application is clear. There is much confusion on a desk that’s jumbled with papers, files, business forms, and so on. Nothing is clear about what is happening on this desk, what has been accomplished, what still needs to be accomplished, and so on.

INDING A PATTERN

The difference between clutter and order is much like the difference betweennoise and music. There is order and harmony in music, even the styles that aren’tquite your taste. With noise, however, there is no pattern. Nothing isaccomplished except to get your attention.Think back to that jumbled desk. Is there any type of pattern as to where thingsare? Are all the invoices in one area, all the business forms in another? Are pensand pencils placed neatly in a jar or holder?Of course the answer is no. There is a lack of organization and design when itcomes to how the objects are strewn about. Obviously the person sitting there
