Kargil War
, also known as the
Kargil conflict
,
was anarmed conflictbetweenIndiaand Pakistanthat took place between May and July 1999 in theKargildistrict of Kashmir . The cause of the war was the infiltration of Pakistani soldiers and Kashmirimilitantsinto positions on theIndian side of theLine of Control(LOC), which serves as the
border between the twostates. During and directly after the war, Pakistan blamed the fighting entirely on independentKashmiri insurgents, but documents left behind bycasualtiesand later statements by Pakistan'sPrime Minister andChief of Army Staff showed involvement of Pakistaniparamilitaryforces, led by GeneralAshraf Rashid. TheIndian Army, supported by theIndian Air Force, attacked the Pakistani positions and, with internationaldiplomaticsupport, eventually forced withdrawal of the Pakistani forces across the LOC.The war is one of the most recent examples of high altitude warfare in mountainous terrain,  which posed significantlogisticalproblems for the combating sides. This was only the seconddirect ground war between any two countries after they had developednuclear weapons, after theSino-Soviet border conflictof 1969; it is also the most recent. (India and Pakistan both test- detonatedfissiondevices in May 1998, thoughthe first Indian nuclear testwas conducted in 1974.) The conflict led to heightened tension between the two nations and increased defencespending by India. In Pakistan, the aftermath caused instability of thegovernmentand theeconomy, and, onOctober 12,1999, a
by the military placed army chief PervezMusharraf in power.
