Light Work Celebrates 40 years with 40 Artists Exhibition and Reception
By Delani WeaverSyracuse University’s Light WorkGallery will be celebrang four decadesof supporng up-and-coming arstswith a special exhibion displayingthe work of 40 arsts who are or havebeen associated with it over the last 40years.The exhibion, called “40/40:Selecons from the Light WorkCollecon,” is free and will be at theRobert B. Menschel Media Centerat Syracuse University unl Oct. 25.There will be a recepon Sept. 26.The non-prot group, run by arststhemselves, and Jerey Hoone, hasprovided support to other aspiringand underrated arsts throughresidencies and technical assistance inphotography and digital imaging withits digital lab, library and black andwhite darkrooms.The works will reect dierent themesand inuences as well as express thereasoning behind the group’s creaonin 1973.Internaonal stars Cindy Sherman,Carrie Mae Weems and Syracusephotographer Marna Bell’s work willall be displayed at the exhibion.Light Works has developedrelaonships with arsts locally andnaonally. The rst gallery opened inNew York City at Syracuse University’sLubin House. Since then, the gallery hasspread all over the country includingto Philadelphia and San Francisco.It also has an art photographypublicaon, Light Work’s Contact,which features works from severalarsts.Light Work awards grants to threephotographers living in the CentralNew York region every year. Anexhibion presents images from LauraHeyman, Jared Landberg and JaniceLevy, the 2013 grant recipients.
