OK I have said the dreaded \u201cM\u201d word, marketing. Why does marketing instill fear in the hearts of so
many entrepreneurs? Here is the reason I believe. What is the first thing that pops into your mind when
you hear the wordm ar ket i ng? Would used car salesman be correct? Most of us have a negative picture about
marketing that conjures up words like shyster and charlatan maybe even snake oil salesman. I t\u2019s not really fair
you know because without marketing no one would ever know where to get the products and services they
need.
Most entrepreneurs market themselves very haphazardly. When you are busy you avoid
marketing because you don\u2019t have enough time. When things are slow you jump into marketing
w ith both feet and no real plan.Then because you don\u2019t like to market you are not very successful. Sure
you bring in a few clients but very often they are not the best fit for you or your business. Your best clients
always come by word of mouth from raving fans but sadly there doesn\u2019t seem to be enough of that kind of
client to keep your practice full.
Well I have some exciting new s for you! Using the new w eb 2.0 w orld and Social Media
netw orking it is possible to market yourself online in the same natural w ay you develop
relationships with person. You do this by starting conversations and getting to know each other. After you
get to know each other you can present your products and services in a very natural and conversational way.
This is a large paradigm shift for traditional marketers because in this brave new I nternet World
your prospects are in control. They get to pick and choose who they want to listen to. Then they also get
to vote on who becomes the new thought leaders in their field based on who provides the most useful and
relevant information. They vote by answering a blog post, or by using social bookmarking sites, or by joining
in surveys, or by re\u2010Tweeting a post, or by commenting on Facebook or by viewing and voting on a You Tube
video and on and on and on. Of course the most important way they vote, is by doing business with you.
So what does that mean to you? I t means if you are passionate about w hat you do and w hat you
have to offer, and if you provide relevant and authentic content and you truly w ant to serve your
clients; your prospects w ill spend more time listening to w hat you have to say. Then they will check
out your website to see what you have to offer. Finally, if they like what they see they may even become a
raving fan and a client.
Some studies show that a prospect will visit your site seven times before they ever do business with you so it
is important to have plenty of targeted information on your website for them to explore. The focus should
be on them and their problem and how you can solve it as opposed to you and your expertise.
This is good reason for having your WordPress blog attached to your website. You should be posting to your
blog at least 3 times per week so prospect can begin to look forward to your posts and when they come to
read it they will often look around the rest of your site.
Now, how will we use social media to market you and your services? What social media tools will you use to
enter the conversation and provide the authentic and relevant information your prospects are searching for.I
am sure you have heard that all you have to do is join Facebook, Tw itter and LinkedI n. Then you
need to post to your blog a few times a w eek. When you do this it w ill send a steady stream of
targeted traffic to your site.
Does it sound too good to be true to you? Well sadly, it is. There is a lot more to do than simply joining the big
three. There are seven important ingredients for a successful online business. They include a good
Website and Blog and then systems for E-Commerce, for Marketing, for Generating Traffic, for
List Building, for Product Creation and finally for Building Relationships.
