MarissahasbeeninvolvedinSpecialOlympics,coachingequestrian.AttendingWorldGameswouldbeanunimagineablehonorforherSheislookingforwardtorepresentinghercountry,sportandSpecialOlympicsinthebrightestlightpossible.SpecialOlympicsathleteshavetaughtMarissathepowerofthehumanspirit,tonevergiveupandtotrulylovewhatyoudo.Notatrainingsessionorshowgoesbythatsheisnotblownawaybythespiritofcamaraderieandthedeterminationthattheathletesdisplay.SpecialOlympicsinspiresMarissatotryharder,togivemore,toextendherselfintheserviceofothersandtobeaninspirationtothosearoundher.SheismostproudofbeingtheheadcoachfortheDavieCountySpecialOlympicsequestrianteam.Also,sheisproudofcreatingtheDixielandFarmwithherhusband,wheretheyboardandtrainhorsesandcoachriders.Marissaandherhusbandreceivedthe2005PiedmontTriadAreaAwardforOutstandingCorporationfortheirworkwithSpecialOlympics;oneofthehorsesshetrainedforSpecialOlympicswasnamedNorthCarolina'sHorseoftheYearin2005andin2001shewasnomintedforanEmmyAwardforherworkinTVnews.Sheenjoyshorsebackriding,goingtothemoviesandhangingoutwithherfamily.
