Avoid t he headache -
your guide t o a successful m ove
Moving house
can be a daunt ing prospect …
Moving home consist s of packing and t r anspor t ing
often thousands of different objects, each of different
value, shape and size, from one locat ion t o anot her.
Given t he st ress of selling, buying and rent ing homes,

it’s no wonder that people often give little time to thinking exactly what will or will not be moved to their new home.

T hat ’s why t he Brit ish Associat ion of

Rem overs (BAR) has produced t his leaflet t o help you prepare and plan for a smoot h and efficient move to your new home.

Planning your m ove
T he Schedule of Ser vice

In most cases an est imat or or sur veyor will visit you in your home t o discuss t he det ails of your planned move. He or she will explain t he ser vices t hey

provide and agree wit h you exact ly what ’s t o be
included in the quotation, together with a detailed
Ser vice Specification of what will and won’t be
included in t he final move.
Ser vice Specification
W hen you ar r ange for a removal company t o
help you move, t hey need t o under st and how

much r equir es moving, if packing is r equir ed, t he t ime it will t ake t hem and how far t hey need t o travel. They will then arrange the appropriate

vehicles, number of men required and packing
materials to meet your requirements.
The Ser vice Specificat ion document is designed
with you in mind. It is there to confir m the specific
requirement s of your move and help avoid t hose
last minute niggles prior to moving into your
new home.
Packing
Packing can be t he most t ime consuming and

frustrating par t of any move. Many people often leave it t o t he last minut e only t o find t hey don’t have enough appropr iat e boxes t o do t he job

proper ly.

Your remover can supply you wit h all t he packing mater ials you need at reasonable cost. According t o your wishes, your mover can do all, some or

none of t he packing.
If you have agr eed for your mover t o do t he
packing, the quotation will include the supply of
labour and packing mat er ials and t herefore all you
need t o do is relax and let t hem get on wit h it .
If you had int ended t o do all t he packing but , for
what ever reason, you haven’t had t he t ime t hen
you will often find that your mover will still be able
t o assist .
However, fir st ly you should give t hem reasonable

war ning (at least a phone call t he day befor e) so t hat when the lorr y arrives at your home, it will have the necessar y cr ew and packing mat er ials needed for

the extra work. Secondly, they will have to make an
additional char ge for the extr a wor k.
Insur ance
Even wit h t he gr eat est car e t aken, no mover
can guar ant ee t hat your per sonal and cher ished
belongings won’t get damaged in t r ansit . This is why
all member companies must have insur ance which
meet s BAR st andar ds.
W hat to Take
Decide what you want t o t ake ear ly on and
make sure your mover knows t his before t he
quotation is provided. Do not put everything
together in one room or area;this makes it very
difficult for the crew to work and it will slow
t hem down.

If you can, tr y to remove anything that is not going t o your new home before t he moving day. If you can’t, then just identify the items

clear ly, usually by using labels pr ovided by your
mover.
Special Items
If you have somet hing unusual t o t ake wit h you,
let your mover know. They will make special
arrangements for plants, fine art, antiques, wine
collect ions, IT equipment , or anyt hing else about
which you are par ticular ly concer ned.
The Date

Ar r ange t he dat e as far ahead as possible, but don’t guess. Keep your mover infor med if you t hink t hey might need to react at shor t notice.

Mains Ser vices

Your mover is not allowed to tamper with mains ser vices. Make ar r angement s wit h your gas and/or electricity companies well in advance. Also inform your t elephone company and Int er net Ser vice

Pr ovider and, if r equir ed, make ar r angement s t o keep
your old number s.
Deep Freezers

It is advisable t o r un down st ocks as much as possible - fr eezer s ar e not designed t o be moved whilst loaded. For long dist ance moves t hey will need t o be

completely emptied and for shor t tr ips the contents
may be t empor ar ily removed, packed
in boxes and r eloaded at t he new home. However,
please not e t hat neit her t he mover nor most insurer s
will accept responsibility for any deterioration of the
cont ent s.
Carpets and Curtains
Your mover will t ake down cur t ains and t ake up

car pets by special arr angement (check your Ser vice Specification), but will not fit them again in your new home.

Light Fittings
You should remove light fit t ings before t he moving day
as your mover is not qualified t o do so.
System Furniture

This t ype of fur nit ure is not designed t o be moved in it s assembled for m.You should discuss t his wit h your mover who will be responsible for dismantling it.

Gener ally speaking, r emover s would not expect t o
reassemble such fur nit ure alt hough t hey may, under
cer tain circumstances, be prepared to quote separ ately
for such wor k.
Drawers

Clot hes and ot her light it ems may be left in dr awer s, but heavier items such as books, files or tools should be r emoved and packed separ at ely.

Parking and Access
Tell your mover if there are parking restrictions
at either location.Your mover will make arrange-
ments with the authorities for permission to park
if required.
Please also infor m t hem if t hey are likely t o face
any difficult ies get t ing access t o your new home.
These might include nar r ow st r eet s, over hanging t r ees,
unmade r oads, small door ways, spir al st air cases, et c.
Multi-Storey Buildings
Tell your mover if you are moving t o a flat or a
multi-storey building and whether or not there is a lift
(and how big it is!). W here possible we recommend
that you make arr angements for pr ior ity use of the lift
for t he day.
Spare Key

Somet imes t he removal vehicle will ar r ive at your new
home befor e you do. If you can, give t he for eman a
spare key so t hey won’t lose any t ime wait ing for you.

Maps and Plans
Please give t he dr iver clear direct ions t o your new

home and a st reet map if possible. Also dr aw a floor plan of your new home and give it t o t he for eman so that ever ything can be put in the correct room.

Colour coded labels can also help t o ident ify t he
correct location for items - speak to the estimator
about this.
Children and Pets
Older children may enjoy t he excit ement of t he move
and should be included as much as possible, bot h
dur ing t he planning and t he move it self, t o help t hem
under st and t he reasons for moving and reduce
homesickness.

You might consider having younger children and pet s looked after by a relative or fr iend while the move is t aking place.
