During Spain’s colonization
of Latin America, theSpanish instituted thesystem of 
encomienda
.Spain granted colonistscontrol over the Native American peoples living on aplot of land in Latin America.The Spanish colonists
called
encomenderos
wereallowed to use the parcel of land and could require itsnative inhabitants to paytribute.

The tribute required from theIndians usually took the form of labor on plantations and in themines built by the Spanish,although some native groupswere able to pay tribute in goldor other goods.
In return the
encomenderos
 were supposed to care for theIndians by protecting them fromexternal threats and converting them toChristianity.
In practice, however, the
encomienda
systembecame little more than a form of slavery.
