FROM THE PASTORS DESK

With just five weeks remaining until the 2013 Parish Pastoral Assembly, it is perhaps timely to revisit the purpose of these Assemblies in the life of the Parish. Over the coming weeks, in the lead up to the Assembly, I will include a little more commentary on the Assembly and its processes in Bridgeside Bulletin. The Role of the Parish Pastoral Assembly The first things to be acknowledged is the relationship between the Parish Pastoral Assembly and the Parish Pastoral Council. The role of the Parish Pastoral Assembly in the pastoral planning process is simply to receive the draft Parish Pastoral Plan that has been prepared by the Parish Pastoral Council, and then to accept, reject or modify that draft Pastoral Plan. It is not the role of the Assembly to draft a Pastoral Plan, nor to propose items for inclusion in the Pastoral Plan (which is why proposals from the floor of the Assembly are not permitted). The Assembly has the ability to approve (or reject) a Pastoral Plan, but not to formulate a Pastoral Plan. The Parish Pastoral Assembly is also the forum that elects the membership of the Parish Pastoral Council, the body that has primary responsibility for preparing and overseeing the implementation of a Parish Pastoral Plan. The Role of the Parish Pastoral Council The Parish Pastoral Council is one of the consultative and advisory bodies that assist me in my role as the Parish Priest of Forster Tuncurry. In particular, the Pastoral Council has a lead role in the ongoing pastoral planning process that helps the Parish maintain a focus on the important issues that it faces, and will continue to face into the future. The Pastoral Council is, therefore, the visionary body that consults, explores and discerns the priorities that the Parish should embrace, and then formulates those priorities into the formal Parish Pastoral Plan which is to be considered at the Parish Pastoral Assembly. Next week I will explore the reason why the significance of a Parish Pastoral Plan, and why it is important for the Parish to engage in the process of developing such a Plan. If anyone has a specific question about the Parish Pastoral Assembly, and associated, please do not hesitate to contact me. Until next week Fr Andrew

HYMN FOR THE BLESSING OF THE FLEET

The Star of the Sea You never crossed waters or slept in a boat but sailors who struggled to keep ships afloat, turned to you Mary and asked you to be a light on their journeys the Star of the sea. Ref: Ave Maria, Star of the sea, guide me to Jesus, show him to me. Ave Maria, Star of the sea, guide me to Jesus show him to me. The church like the boat of St Peter goes forth to bring the good news to the south or the north, some times we worry way out on the deep is Jesus still with us, is Jesus asleep? Mary, we go on our journey of life, its highs and its lows and its joys and its strife, all that we ask when our journeys are done is to share in the glory of your blessed Son. Words and music by our own Paul Geraghty, and was written to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Blessing of the Fleet.

OUR LITURGY TODAY

Responsorial Psalm Response: Give thanks to the Lord, his love is everlasting. Some sailed to the sea in ships to trade on the mighty waters. These men have seen the Lords deeds, the wonders he does in the deep. For he spoke; he summoned the gale, tossing the waves of the sea up to heaven and back into the deep; their soul melted away in their distress. Then they cried to the Lord in their need and he rescued them from their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper: all the waves of the sea were hushed. They rejoiced because of the calm and he led them to the haven they desired. Let them thank the Lord for his love, the wonders he does for men. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! A star shall come out of Jacob, and a sceptre shall rise out of Israel Alleluia! Today

RECEIVING COMMUNION
So that we might receive Communion in a fit and proper way, please be aware of the following: When we process forward to receive Communion, we have been asked by the Australian Bishops to adopt a common and unified gesture of reverence before doing so. In Australia that gesture is a bow of the head and shoulders (GIRM, 160). Any other form of reverence, including a genuflection, should therefore be avoided. Communion by self-intinction (self-dipping) is never permitted, since we receive Communion and never take Communion. Please refrain from this inappropriate action. We regret that we do not have the physical facilities to offer communion while kneeling, and respectfully ask you to refrain from kneeling to receive Communion while part of the procession, since this is contrary to the nature of the Communion procession itself. Your cooperation in honouring this request is very much appreciated, and we thank you for your consideration.

The Lord is good to those who hope in him, to the soul that seeks him.
SILENCE IN THE LITURGY
We observe silence during our liturgy (on Sundays and weekdays) at the following times: 1. During the Penitential Act, after the Presider invites us to prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries in order to recollect ourselves; 2. During the Collect, after the invitation of the Presider to Let us pray again in order to recollect ourselves; 3. During the Liturgy of the Word, at the conclusion of the first reading in order that we might meditate on what we have heard; 4. During the Liturgy of the Word, at the conclusion of the second reading in order that we might meditate on what we have heard; and 5. During the Liturgy of the Word, at the conclusion of the homily in order that we might meditate on what we have heard.
