HORSLEY HILL NEWSLETTER
SPRING 2009
THE INDEPENDENT ALLIANCEcontinues to work towardsridding Horsley Hill Ward of all its Labour councillors.
In 2008 we were successful in getting Gordon Finch elected as anIndependent after he spent a year working alongside a previous Independentcandidate,Mervyn Owen.Councillor Finch has spent the last year sending outregular Newsletters, personally knocking on doors with his campaign teamto discuss issues directly with the people of the ward, holding regular wardsurgeries, supporting groups in the ward such as Save Our Seashore andFriends of Bamburgh. What is the Labour Party’s i.e.Iain Malcolm’s response? They called Councillor Finch ‘lazy’ then tried to pinch all his ideas! We know that the people of Horsley Hill are not so easily fooled and willcontinue to try to get rid of the old Labour hangers on.We are pleased toannounce that Dennis Allsop, who lives in the ward, has announced that he willstand as an Independent candidate in 2010.Councillor Finch said,‘I amdelighted to endorse Dennis. He has helped the Independent Alliance for overtwo years and I would never have been elected without his work and support.’
THE INDEPENDENT ALLIANCEholds campaign meetingsevery month which areattended by anyone who is interested in supportingour attempts to for an active and effective opposition to the Labour Party domination of the borough.
We meet upstairs in the Old Ship on Sunderland Road inSouth Shields at 7pm on the second Monday of every month. The meetings give people the opportunity to discuss anyissues of concern, plan our questions and debate for Councilmeetings, organise newsletters and canvassing and raisemoney to support this.We hold additional meetings to debateall policy issues. Anyone interested in becoming an Independent candidate isparticularly welcome. We are hoping to have candidates in allwards in South Tyneside in 2010.The Campaign group workstogether in every area so no one has to take on the task alone. For more information please contact Jane Branleyon 456 0152.
COUNCIL TAX RISE TO BE 2.9% THIS YEAR
This has been agreed by Council and part of that agreement is that the next year will see a rise of 3%.We accept that the Labourgovernment is continuing to reduce spending by local councils but are concerned that the way in which the Labour Group inSouth Tyneside have managed the budget means that the cuts that have been made will affect the most vulnerable people in theborough. In addition to the cuts are the increases in charges which will hit the same people. The Council claim that the people of the borough have been consulted.A sum total of 96 residents attended meetings in January. The Business sector, the Trade Unions and the Voluntary sector were also consulted. We are not told how many people this wasin total but it is unlikely to top 96.So,probably less that 150 people have had their say.As they were asked to comment onproposals agreeable to the Council they were hardly likely to come up with any revolutionary ideas.Next year the Independent Alliance will ensure that many more people are involved in this process by advertising all consultationevents through our Newsletters. If you want your voice to be heard make sure you attend. We will also be talking directly topeople in the borough in our regular street surveys.
Cllr Jane Branley,Leader of the Independent Alliance, added,‘Dennis is an intelligent, honourable man who has proved that heputs the interests of people of the area before his own.I look forward to campaigning with him to get rid of Eileen Leask or whichever stooge Iain Malcolm puts up for the Labour Party.’Look out for more details about Dennis in future Newsletters. If anyresident wishes to help him in his campaign or discuss anyissuewith him please ring him on 456 2137.To contact Cllr Gordon Finch ring 455 5903 or come to the wardsurgeries:
