INTRODUCING MARSHALL GRAINGER,
Independent candidate for Whitburn andMarsden for the local election in 2010.
 As residents of this ward will recall Harry Normanstood as an Independent for two years and had a voteof 787 in 2006 and 883 in 2007.Harry was unableto stand in 2009 for personal reasons but has nowendorsed Marshall Grainger as the next Independentcandidate.He said,‘I am delighted that Marshall istaking up the Independent baton in this ward andwarmly endorse him.Lots of people from the areagave me considerable support and I’m sure they willdo the same for Marshall.’Marshal Grainger has lived and worked in SouthTyneside all his life.He is currently employed as anelectrician in an electronic communications andservices company.He is married with three childrenand two grand children.Marshall commented,‘Iserved as a Liberal Democrat councillor for Cleadon&East Boldon for eight years and am familiar with theworkings and procedures of the Council.Iam alsoaware of the severe limitations of the current LabourParty administration and firmly believe that only theIndependent Alliance can get rid of it.’It is because of a firm belief that residents shouldhave an impact on decisions taken locally thatMarshall has joined the Independent Alliance.CllrJane Branley stated,‘I am very pleased to welcomeMarshall into the campaign and we will be working tosupport him as the candidate for Whitburn andMarsden.I am convinced that 2010 will see manygains in the local election for the Independent Alliance and thatWhitburn and Marsden will see thebeginning of the end of Labour domination.’If you wish to talk to Marshall on this or any otherissue please contact him on 427 5752 or emailhenry.grainger@sky.com
THE INDEPENDENT ALLIANCEholds campaign meetingsevery month which areattended by anyone who is interested in supportingour attempts to for an activeand effectiveopposition to the Labour Party domination of the borough.
Wemeet upstairs in the Old Ship on Sunderland Road in SouthShields at 7pm on the second Monday of every month.Themeetings give people the opportunity to discuss any issues ofconcern,plan our questions and debate for Council meetings,organise newsletters and canvassing and raise money to supportthis.We hold additional meetings to debate all policy issues. Anyone interested in becoming an Independent candidate isparticularly welcome.We are hoping to have candidates in all wardsin South Tyneside in 2010.The Campaign group works togetherin everyarea so no one has to take on the task alone.For more information please contact Jane Branley on 456 0152.
COUNCIL TAX RISE TO BE 2.9% THIS YEAR
This has been agreed by Council and part of that agreement is that the next year will see a rise of 3%.We accept that the Labourgovernment is continuing to reduce spending by local councils but are concerned that the way in which the Labour Group inSouth Tyneside have managed the budget means that the cuts that have been made will affect the most vulnerable people in theborough.In addition to the cuts are the increases in charges which will hit the same people.The Council claim that the people of the borough have been consulted.A sum total of 96 residents attended meetings in January.The Business sector,the Trade Unions and the Voluntary sector were also consulted.We are not told how many people this wasin total but it is unlikely to top 96.So,probably less that 150 people have had their say.As they were asked to comment onproposals agreeable to the Council they were hardly likely to come up with any revolutionary ideas.Next year the Independent Alliance will ensure that many more people are involved in this process by advertising all consultationevents through our Newsletters.If you want your voice to be heard make sure you attend.We will also be talking directly topeople in the borough in our regular street surveys.
