Scenario questions
Employers will present you with a hypothetical situation and ask how you wouldrespond. This type of question has a number of purposes, including finding out whetheryou can think on your own and giving an indication of how you can transfer yourexperience from one situation to another. This is especially useful if you have limitedexperience of the job for which you are applying and where employers are recruiting youon your potential to fulfil the role.1.
 
You are Brand Manager for a large confectionery firm. One day, you are sent anote telling you that some of your brands have been purposefully contaminatedwith a lethal substance before leaving the warehouse for the retail outlets. Whatshould you do?2.
 
As a manager, you are responsible for introducing a staff appraisal scheme intothe work place. How do you allay some of the concerns voiced by your staff?
Competence or behavioral questions
Employers will ask you to give examples of situations when you have used particularskills so that they can gather real evidence of the extent to which you have developed andused them. The key here is to provide lots of evidence of how you used your skills ratherthan simply describing the situation. Pay particular attention to the follow up questionsthe employers ask.
 
Give an example of when you influenced the work of others. What did you do andhow did you achieve it? What were the outcomes?
 
Give an example of when you successfully introduced change into a project ortask. How did you do it and what were the outcomes?
