Introduction
MPI the Message Passing Interface is a standardizedand portable message passing systemStandardization of Message Passing in a DistributedMemory Environment i.e., SPC with DM and NOWSThe MPI standard defines the syntax and semantics of acore of library routines for FORTRAN 77 and CMPI Standard developed by a collaborative effort of 80people from 40 organizations through MPI Forum(representing vendors of parallel systems industrialusers industrial and national research laboratories anduniversities)MPI draft released on Nov 1993 at SupercomputingConference. MPI 1.0 released on June 1994.

MPI intro
MPI has been strongly influenced by work at theIBM T. J. Watson Research Center. Intel’sNX/2, Express , nCUBE’s Vertex, p4, andPARMACS. Other important contributions havecome from Zipcode, Chimp, PVM, Chameleon, and PICL.MPI Forum identified some
criticalshortcomings of existing message passingsystems
e.g.., complex data layouts or supportfor modularity and safe communication. The major goal of MPI as with most standards isa degree of
portability
across differentmachines
