5 people injured after scaffolding outside factory building collapses

Five construction workers were injured after a scaffolding outside a factory building that is being upgraded collapsed.

SINGAPORE: Five construction workers were injured on Wednesday morning after a scaffolding outside a factory building that is being upgraded collapsed. The accident occurred at Lian Soon Construction's worksite at Toa Payoh North at about 11.40am. The factory building is located between the mosque (Masjid Muhajirin) and the SPH News Centre. Six foreign workers - three from Bangladesh, two from China and one from Malaysia were working on the scaffold when it collapsed. Five of them sustained injuries and were sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Three have so far been discharged. The sixth worker was treated on-site for minor injuries.

Work has halted at the site, and also at a second site that is under the same contractor. This is the third workplace incident in seven days. On September 30, two workers were killed when a crane toppled at the construction site of the National Art Gallery, near the Padang. Four others were injured. On September 26, a Bangladeshi construction worker fell 20 storeys to his death while working at a condominium in Katong. The spate of accidents has raised concern at Singapore's Manpower Ministry (MOM). It is urging companies to proactively carry out thorough risk assessments and enforce safety measures.
