A new Mt. Juliet city judge was sworn in Monday, but the mayor wasn’t happyabout how he got the job.Andy Wright, whoalso serves as city attorneyfor Lebanon, was hired as Mt. Juliet’s newest municipal judge on Monday, July 6,during a special called citycommission meeting whichMt. Juliet Mayor LindaElam did not attend. Atthe commission’s regularlyscheduled meeting Mondaynight, July 13, Elam saidshe was “disappointed inthe commission and thecity manager” in regards tothe functioning of the citycourt.“No one has theauthority to interfere withthe operation of the citycourt,” Elam said to Mt. Juliet City Manager RandyRobertson. “As a lawyer I amoffended at the way this hasbeen handled. The city courtshould be separate.”Elam continued tosay that it was “decided ina group meeting” to sign off on Wright’s hire, and thatRobertson and the other citycommissioners knew aheadof time that she could notattend the July 6 meeting tovote on a new judge. She saidshe was told that the othercommissioners “insisted” onholding the meeting on July6, adding that she thoughtthat as “chairman” of thecommission she should bepart of such an importantdecision. Robertson and theother four commissioners – District 1 Ted Floyd, District2 and Vice Mayor Will Sellers,District 3 Ed Hagerty, andDistrict 4 Jim Bradshaw – held the meeting on July 6,however, and hired Wright without Elam’s input.Elam said shefound what had “occurredthe last few weeks whollyunacceptable” and that therest of the commission andthe city manager shouldhave either waited untilthe regularly scheduledcommission meeting thenext week or cancel thespecial meeting.“I
nd thecommission’s performanceunacceptable and showing alack of courtesy,” Elam saidat the table. “This boardhas never acted in such anarbitrary manner.”The mayor addedthat there “was no harmdone, and it’s water underthe bridge.”Robertson, however, disagreed.“I have absolutelynothing to do with thehiring or
ring of the city judge,” he retorted. “It is thecommission’s decision.”He added that whatthe mayor had “indicatedis wrong, there were noconversations (betweenthem) and I am disappointedabout it.”And so Wrightstepped forward and wassworn in by former longtimeMt. Juliet judge John Gwin. For more information onevents leading up to Wright’shire see the July 8 edition of the

Juliet residentsto contact commissionersregarding an upcomingordinance to opt out of arecently approved Statelaw prohibiting guns inparks. He said he wants hisconstituents to contact himto “tell me how to vote.”Sellers said as thecommission’s representativeof the City Parks andRecreation Board he couldsay that everyone on thatboard “is totally in favor of opting out of the no guns inparks law” for Mt. Juliet.“There’s nocompelling reason whyanyone would go to a littleleague game carrying anine-millimeter,” Sellerscommented. “Maybe in theircar, but not in their jacket.”Commissionersdiscussed a recent error insewer billing for many Mt. Juliet businesses in whichWest Wilson Utility Districtmeters underchargedbusinesses since 2006,totaling around $71,000in back sewer chargesowed to the City of Mt. Juliet by the businesses. While WWUD forgave theback water charges, Cityof
