To: Kim Powers <kpowers11@gmail.com>Macrame Owls:(Beloved treasure of Grandmas everywhere)Hello my little Poppers and welcome back to another edition of Pop! Goes the Culture. Yowza. That's really the only wordthat could sum up the past couple of weeks or so. I was going to use this introduction to list and discuss the many itemsI've been forgetting at home throughout the past two..err three...err four(?!?!) weeks (least severe - my sunglasses. mildlysevere - my wallet. very severe - my keys; one time my whole set, another time just my house key.) But don't worryeveryone, I'm pretty sure I will continue to forget important items at home, so that will always be a topic for fodder.Instead we have to discuss what has clearly been dominating my life , rendering me unable to process/write aboutanything pop-culture related: the death of Michael Jackson. My earliest memory of Michael Jackson was the video for "Leave Me Alone" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5KAJw4y8wE

), which I probably watched every night at 2:00am for

a straight summer. To be completely honest, it scared the shit out of me, but at the same time, I thought there wassomething fun and magical about the world within the video (and this video is also probably responsible for my love of monkeys.) And I think that sums up Michael Jackson - fun and magical with this scary edge. Now, while my favorite Michael Jackson memory should be The Simpsons episode (nothing sums up a child of the80s/90s like when Dan and I both busted out singing "Happy Birthday Lisa"), I have a more recent memory. One night, incollege, a few friends were hanging out and were going to call it an early night. So I started telling everyone to stay untilmidnight, because there was a surprise at midnight. Everyone immediately became excited - was it a tray of drinks? Asurprise guest? A pony?Personally I thought it was better than all of the above, because when midnight arrived I blasted "Don't Stop 'Til You GetEnough" and started dancing my heart out. What I was hoping would happen would that everyone would join in to make abig dance party. What actually happened was me awkwardly jerking my body around in front of my friends for five minutesbefore they all left.Like Michael Jackson, all I wanted to do was dance, and like Michael Jackson, I was left alone. So let's all put on oneglove, dig out our Macaulay Culkin shirts (mine had neon colored hearts on it), and get started, shall we?

(Google image search: hands and knees)1) Hands and Kneeshttp://www.myspace.com/handsandkneesHands and Knees are a group from Massachusetts, but one listen and you feel like you're down in Georgia. Okay, somaybe the only time I was in Georgia was driving through on my way to Florida and we stopped off at Denny's (back whenI wasn't as lucky to have five Denny's in a four mile radius) so it was kinda a big deal and there was just the right amountof humidity in the air.Oh yeah, the band. Jangly guitars, gin-tinged vocals. Kids that grew up on their mom and pop's country records and stillsecretly listened to them while going through their teenage punk years. They just released their (second?) album in April, and it feels like the band is heading along on an ascent to their creative peak.2) Kitty, Daisy & Lewishttp://www.myspace.com/kittydaisyandlewisA young sibling trio playing blues and swing and country covers while originating from London? Yes please. Although thatdescription could conjure up thoughts of disingenuous kids trying to play dress up, there's nothing but sincerity comingfrom their yelps.Plus, their mom is Ingrid Weiss who once played in The Raincoats, who were featured in the 10/17 edition of Pop! So thatobviously gives them some cred.3) Eugene McGuinnesshttp://www.myspace.com/eugenemcguinnessI immediately responded to British Eugene McGuinness when I heard the song "Fonz". Heyyyy! (yup...still trying to bring itback...) His voice sounds a bit like the guy from She Wants Revenge mixed with Ian Curtis, but with a catchy as fuckmelody and moving drum beat. Although nothing else from his studio debut album is as straight-up catchy it's a great mixof raw emotions and polished mixes.4) Broken Records
