LA may consists of a few cells or a contiguous group of cells under the control of one BSC as shown in Fig. 1 However, all cells in a LAmust be under the control of a single MSC in a single PLMN.
After channel acquisition ,the mobile decodes the BS informationover the BCCH.
The BS information includes country code, network code, and
location area code
(LAC), and possibly the cell identity.
If any of these information do not mach with the information stored inSIM card, the MS thinks that it has been moved into a new area andreports its location to the system so that incoming calls can be routedcorrectly. Also MS will periodically reports its location if there hasbeen no activity for a given amount of time.
The time period of reporting is part of the information contained in theBCCH and may vary, due to network loading. The MS location is alsoupdated in the system whenever the MS changes cells duringconversation.
