“Why study the constitution?”
 Excellent question. Why
should
westudy the United States Constitution?
It’s just some old, boring piece of paper,
right? WRONG!The Constitution is much more than asimple piece of writing. It is thecornerstone of our everyday life as
American citizens. How so? I’m glad
you asked.Following the failure of the Articles of Confederation, the founding fatherswere looking for a new, better, upgradedform of government.

One man was up for the task of draftinga new plan for the nation. Therefore, in1787, James Madison drafted theConstitution. While the draft was welldone, there was a problem. The representatives of the different
states wouldn’t approve Madison’s
Constitution unless a Bill of Rights wasadded to protect their interests. The Bill of Rights is made up of the firstten amendments to the Constitution andcontains many of the rights US citizensexercise every day, such as:The right to free speech.Freedom of religion.

Freedom of the press. The right to bear arms. The right to a fair trial. And more.
