I
n the shelter, they’re only  weeks away from finish-ing the sun room where thetropical birds will soon liveunder the big skylight. The finches, love birds, budgies and canaries nowaway from natural light willsoon wake up to the warmsunshine and we will hear their cheerful voices. Trying to provide better for the little birds is typicalof The Toronto HumaneSociety. It’s a place wherepeople are always thinking of new ways to make theanimals’ stay easier. The way we take goodcare of the animals is what makes volunteering or work-ing at the shelter rewarding.Otherwise, seeing animals who have suffered so much would be disheartening. Our shelter sees Toronto’sanimal abuse of all kinds:rabbits that have arrivedcaked in dirt, crammed 12to a carton; the tiniest kit-tens wrenched prematurely from their mothers andbarely alive; dogs so used tobeing beaten that thecringe when your hand isinadvertently raised. The timid can be thehardest to help. They try tohide, cats under their blan-kets and dogs shaking inthe back corners oheir pens. It’s clear thathey’ve had everything they know pulled from under them. Thankfully, experi-ence shows that with kind-ness they will soon realizethat they are in the safest of places. Each day when I cometo the Society and witnesshow much is done tohelp, I am reinvigoratedand I recommit myself totelling the animals’ sto-ries. I want people toknow how much theisupport for The TorontoHumane Society means tothe animals. The animals need theSociety to stay strong. That’s why in this issue of  Animaltalk I am asking youto support the animals by joining the Society as amember. It costs $30.00annually ($10.00 for sen-iors). Please use the insert and return envelope.(If you already are amember, you’ll receive arenewal notice when youcurrent membership is near-ing expiry).Purchasing a member-ship is a special gift for theanimals because it makes apowerful statement. It sig-nifies that you havestepped up to take a stakein the shelter’s work, ensur-ing that the Society is hereto care for animals for yearsto come.
