Under the heading Tilburg Trakteert (which translates as Tilburg Treats) beginning in April new events and festivals are announced on an almost weekly basis. For instance Tilburg Zingt (Singing Tilburg), the Meimarkt (May Fair), Festival Mundial with artists from all over the world, Tilburg Ten Miles, Oktober Dansmaand (Dance performances, workshops, and meetings), Festival Playgrounds and Incubate, the festival for independent culture. And last but not least the Tilburgse Kermis (fun fair) which meanders through the city centre during 10 days in July. With its focus on energy, innovation, and creativity Tilburg is a fantastic place to be. It boasts literally hundreds of pubs and restaurants, especially within walking distance of the lively squares of Heuvel and Piusplein. Whispers | ceramic sound sculpture Blue gleaming discs appear to be oating in a semi-darkened room. They are the bells of ve larger-than-life ceramic trumpets which are pointing in various directions. Once your eyes h ave adapted to the gloom you see that the white interiors are plunged in black light. The trumpets spout words, partial sentences, laughter, sometimes noise or a weird sputtering ndrackling. Each trumpet has its own repertory of utterings, the meaning of which is di cult to fathom. The aural characteristics di er because the trumpets vary in length. The talking trumpets are not merely hanging i the room, the vibrations cross over and re ections interact with the environment. The talking voices are embedded in painstakingly composed and variable sounds from the surrounding speakers. Sometimes this is done in an explicitly musical manner yet at times the echoes of the vocal material are distorted. As the voices continue un inching and steadily, the contiguous fabric of sound accelerates and builds up to an abrupt climax. In a ash, the slate is wiped clean again. Then the babbling, murmuring, crackling, and whispering starts afresh. A visit to this installation by composers Rob van Rijswijk and Jeroen Strijbos with visual artist Pierluigi Pompei stirs up ambivalent feelings. You are surrounded, as if submerged in a bath of sounds as undercurrents pull your ears in opposite directions. At the same time, you remain an outsider in a world where you recognize most of the components yet the environment is somehow profoundly alien. This universe draws you in but you cannot get through completely. His interest in the spatial aspect of sculpture, brings him to explore the dimension of sound. So a step is made towards the acoustic qualities of ceramics. Although ocarina's and sound shells have been around for ages, in the past centuries few attempts have been made to give the sound qualities of ceramics and porcelain center stage. Pierluigi Pompei deserves great credit for doing so. Pompei was looking for a spatial connection between ceramics, sound and surroundings. He came upon the shape of trumpets. In his own description: In my quest for the most e cient acoustic form that projects sound into the in nitive without bouncing back, I came upon a logarithmic curve. This curve resembles the shape of a trumpet. Interesting aspect of this curve is that it possesses sound of its own that is liberated by the faintest movement of air. The interaction of the sound with its surroundings and the way it enters it, decides the way we perceive space and sound. Much attention is given to Whispers, created in close collaboration with the composer duo Rob van Rijswijk and Jeroen Strijbos. They composed special electronic music to be performed by the horns. Whispers | scultura sonora in ceramica Dischi illuminati bl sembrano lasciati sospesi in una stanza oscurata. Sono le campane di cinque trombe in ceramica di grandi dimensioni che puntano in direzioni diverse. La parte interna bianca accentuata dalla luce nera che svela lentamente l'installazione dopo che gli occhi si sono adattati al buio.Le trombe versano all'esterno parole, lamenti di frasi, risate; alternate a rumori, strani borbottii ecrepitii. Ogni tromba ha il suo repertorio di espressioni il cui signi cato di cile da carpire; ed ognuna ha una propria caratteristica sonora dovuta alla di erente lunghezza dei coni. Queste trombe che sussurrano non sono solamente appese nello spazio espositivo, si raddoppiano e mutuano, si mischiano e si ri ettono interaggendo con l'ambiente circostante. Le voci che parlano sono accuratamente incorporate con i di erenti suoni che provengono da audio di usori circostanti.A volte questo viene fatto in maniera chiaramente musicale, altre volte distorcendo il materiale vocale.Mentre le voci proseguono indisturbate e costanti, la continua tessitura sonora accellera a creare un crescendo di eventi che si arresta bruscamente. In un istante il colpo di spugna, cosi che il chiacchierio, mormorio, crepitio ed i rumori, ricomincino dinuovo. La fruizione di questa installazione realizzata dai compositori Rob van Rijswijk e Jeroen Strijbos insieme allo scultore Pierluigi Pompei suscita delle sensazioni ambivalenti. Ook door de talrijke opleidingsmogelijkheden, met heel speci ek de dansopleidingen die zijn ondergebracht in het Kunstcluster. En wat dacht je van de Rockacademie. Tilburg is ook een stad met behoorlijk wat bedrijven in de dienstverlenende sector en biedt velen werkgelegenheid in de logistieke industrie. De stad heeft een volkse cultuur met een in het oog springend evenementenseizoen dat zich over het hele jaar uitstrekt. Kortom Tilburg heeft veel te bieden. De grote verscheidenheid aan kunst en cultuur met interessante musea, het mooie palet van stadswandelingen en de gevarieerde architectuur maakt samen met de leuke winkels en uitgaansmogelijkheden Tilburg tot een jne stad. Vervelen is onmogelijk Tilburg is met recht een evenementenstad. Onder de noemer Tilburg Trakteert prijken vanaf april bijna wekelijks nieuwe aankondigingen van evenementen in de stad. Voeg bij de evenementen de honderden cafs en restaurants en het is duidelijk wat Tilburg zo aantrekkelijk maakt als uitgaansstad. Niet alleen voor jongeren; er is voor elk wat wils. Een groot deel van de horeca is op loopafstand geconcentreerd rond een paar pleinen zoals de Heuvel en Piusplein. In studenten-onderzoek polls scoort het uitgaansleven van Tilburg landelijk steevast hoge ogen. Tilburg is veel, maar is vooral een stad waar mensen graag wonen. Dat is het allerbelangrijkste. Men zegt Tilburg is een grote stad met een dorpse sfeer. De inwoners voelen zich thuis in jne woonwijken en vinden er hun weg naar hun werk of studie, naar hun dagelijkse levensbehoeften en naar sport en ontspanning.

The art of sound has been part of the domain of contemporary art for some decades. Thanks to the Fluxus movement in the sixties of the last century an interchange developed between composers and visual artists. Ceramics also developed. First as a comment on the way the signed urinoir by Duchamp was received in the art world in 1917, later as a regular material that could be used by artists and could be appreciated as such in the 21 century, exempli ed by the winning of the Turner price Grayson Perry in 2004 and the conceptual ceramic oeuvre of Ai Wei Wei. In Holland this trend was set by the European Ceramic Workcentre in Den Bosch that from the nineties of the 20-century facilitates the artistic development and emancipation of ceramics. Well known artists like Tony Craig, Anish Kapoor and Anthony Gormley came to Den Bosch to experiment and immediately ceramics were getting a warm reception in the most important Dutch museums. In a work place like the EKWC, where knowledge is shared, the unknown is central and cooperation is stimulated, an adventurous artist like Pierluigi Pompei comes into his own.

Le installazioni sonore fanno parte gi da qualche decennio dellarte contemporanea. Grazie al movimento artistico uxus, dagli anni sessanta del 20 secolo, ha instaurato uno scambio tra arti visive e compositori. Questo ha portato a unemancipazione del suono come supporto alle arti visive. Anche la ceramica ha fatto il suo sviluppo. Prima, accolta con critiche attraverso lorinatoio rmato da Duchamp nel 1917, poi accettata come normale materiale da poter essere usato nel campo delle arti visive e dal 21 secolo, molto apprezzata, come avviene per il lavoro di Grayson Perry vincitore del premio Turner del 2004 o come avviene per il lavoro di Ai Weiwei con la sua opera di ceramica-concettuale. In Olanda questa tendenza si impiantata attraverso lEuropees Keramisch Werkcentrum (Centro Europeo per la Ceramica) che dagli inizi degli anni novanta del 20 secolo nella citta di Den Bosch, da spazio agli sviluppi artistici della ceramica.Artisti famosi, quali Tony Cragg, Anish Kapoor ed Antony Gormley vengono a Den Bosch per sperimentare e subito il lavoro in ceramica riceve un caloroso benvenuto nei pi importanti musei olandesi. E anche qui a Den Bosch che i pi avventurosi artisti sono accolti a braccia aperte. In un Laboratorio dove la conoscenza condivisa, dove lignoto un argomento centrale e dove il lavoro di gruppo stimolato, un artista come Pierluigi Pompei, si trova a proprio agio. Il suo interesse per un lavoro rivolto alla spazialit della scultura, lo portano nel 2006 alla ricerca di una nuova dimensione sonora. Qui viene fatto il passo attraverso il quale le qualit acustiche della ceramica sono messe alla prova. E pur vero che esistono conchiglie sonore e ocarine che risalgono a secoli fa ma nel recente passato sono stati pochi i tentativi che hanno posto le qualit sonore del gres, della porcellana e pi in generale della ceramica, nuovamente come elemento centrale.Va sicuramente riconosciuto come Pierluigi Pompei faccia questo. Pompei era alla ricerca di una relazione spaziale tra ceramica, suono ed ambientecircostante. La risoluzione stata la forma della tromba. Come lui stesso descrive: Nella mia ricerca per una forma acusticamente e ettiva per la proiezione del suono verso un in nito ideale, sono arrivato ad una curva logaritmica. Questa forma assomiglia molto a quella della tromba. Laspetto interessante di questa forma dato dal fatto che essa contiene gi in se il suono, il quale viene liberato con un minimo di movimento daria. Di conseguenza, la relazione con la quale il suono si confronta con lambiente, determina la maniera in cui noi percepiamo il suono e lo spazio circostante. Per questo i suoi coni-trombe sono versatili ed o rono molte possibilit dinstallazione. Whispers | keramische klanksculptuur Blauw oplichtende schijven lijken los in een verduisterde ruimte te hangen. Het zijn de bekers van vijf meer dan manshoge keramische trompetten, die in verschillende richtingen opgesteld zijn. De witte binnenkant beschenen met blacklight, zo blijkt wanneer je ogen zich aangepast hebben aan het duister. Uit die trompetten komen woorden, arden van zinnen, gelach, afgewisseld met ruis en een eigenaardig sputteren en knetteren. Elke trompet zijn eigen repertoire van uitingen waarvan de betekenis niet te peilen valt; en elk heeft zijn eigen klankkarakteristiek doordat ze onderling in lengte verschillen. De sprekende trompetten hangen niet alleen in de ruimte - er is onderlinge overspraak, in weerkaatsing krijgen ze tegenweer van hun omgeving. Zorgvuldig gecomponeerde, veranderlijke geluiden uit rondom opgestelde speakers omgeven de spreekstemmen als een bedding die ze opneemt. Deze is soms uitgesproken muzikaal, soms een vervormde weerspiegeling van het stemmenmateriaal. Terwijl de stemmen onverstoorbaar en gelijkmatig doorlopen, raakt het omringende samenstel van geluiden in een stroomversnelling, en stormt naar een plotse climax. Die veegt in een its de lei schoon, zodat het praten, murmelen, sputteren en ruisen opnieuw een aanvang kan nemen. Rondlopen door deze installatie van componisten Rob van Rijswijk en Jeroen Strijbos (die de klankcompositie, de mix en het beeld verzorgd hebben) en beeldend kunstenaar Pierluigi Pompei (verantwoordelijk voor de trompetten), brengt een tweeslachtig gevoel teweeg. Je wordt er totaal door omsloten, alsof je onderduikt in een klankbad met stromingen die je gehoor naar verschillende kanten trekken. Anderzijds blijf je een buitenstaander in wat zich om je heen afspeelt. Het is een wereld waarvan je de meeste componenten herkent, en die je toch vreemd is. Een wereld waarin je opgenomen bent, maar waarin je nooit helemaal kunt doordringen. Een wereld die je tegelijkertijd omarmt en buitensluit. I compositori olandesi Rob Van Rijswijk (1971) e Jeroen Strijbos (1970), si sono laureati entrambi con lode presso la Hogeschool voor de Kunsten di Utrecht in Tecnologia della Musica con la specializzazione in Composizione Elettronica & Informatica e Composizione Applicata. Hanno poi ottenuto il Master in Media per Composizione elettronica. La collezione di lavori di Strijbos & Van Rijswijk si distingue grazie a composizioni elaborate al computer combinate con elementi spaziali, di design, ed una innovativa tecnologia musicale.Cio avviene in una zona dove discipline diverse si incontrano ed intersecano. "Il suono spesso piu' eloquente di un tono". Quello che a ascina la relazione tra sorgenti di materiale concreto, allo stato puro o elaborati, ed il materiale musicale armonico e/o modale. Questo il fondmento delle loro composizioni. Strijbos e Van Rijswijk hanno ideato e scritto la musica per un gran numero di progetti cinematogra ci, danza e teatro, dove il principio di reciproca in uenza tra il compositore, regista e coreografo ha dimostrato di essere un fattore ricorrente. Sono stati premiati con una menzione d'onore per il PRIX Bruynl Ton. SoundSpots stato selezionato per il "Concorso Internazionale di Bourges 2009, Electroacoustic Music and Electronic Arts ". Rob van Rijswijk (1971) en Jeroen Strijbos (1970) studeerden beiden cum laude af aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht, Muziektechnologie in de specialisaties Elektronische & Computer Compositie en Toegepaste Compositie. Nadien volgden zij de Media Master of Arts voor Elektronische Compositie. De gezamenlijke werken van componisten Strijbos & Van Rijswijk kenmerken zich door de combinatie van computercompositie met elementen van ruimtelijkheid, vormgeving en innovatieve muziektechnologie, waarbij de grenzen en snijvlakken van verschillende kunstdisciplines worden opgezocht. Met klank kun je vaak meer zeggen dan met toon, het is het spel tussen concreet materiaal in ruwe of bewerkte vorm enerzijds en traditioneel harmonisch en/of modaal materiaal anderzijds, dat boeit en de basis vormt van al hun composities. Zij hebben reeds een groot aantal lms, dans- & theaterprojecten van muziek voorzien, waarbij het principe van wederzijdse benvloeding tussen componist en choreograaf of regisseur een wederkerende factor blijkt. Strijbos & Van Rijswijk ontvingen een eervolle vermelding bij de Prix Ton Bruynl 2010. Pierluigi Pompei nasce a Frascati (Roma), nel 1969. Studia presso l' Accademia delle Belle Arti di Roma, sez. di Scultura conseguendo il diploma con 110/110 e lode nel 1993. Nel 1995 vince una borsa di studio come artista diplomato, o erta dal Ministero degli A ari Esteri per lOlanda. Qui frequenta, tra il 1996 e 1998, la Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunst (Accademia Reale delle Belle Arti) a LAja sez. di Scultura terminando gli studi. Inizia ad esporre nel 1994 con la mostra Artisti contemporanei presso la Galleria la Borgognona di Roma. Pompei con il suo lavoro, cerca un confronto con lo spazio dove elementi architettonici ed acustici formano le componenti principali. L'in nito e l' illimitato, linee di con ne, estremit, bordi e spazi non direttamente notati, si prestano come punto di partenza. Per determinare la propria posizione sica, sociale e psicologica, ogni essere umano ha bisogno di barriere e con ni, sia letteralmente che metaforicamente. Il suo lavoro quindi un continuo tentativo di ricerca verso la precisa de nizione dello spazio, sia per se stesso che per lo spettatore. Nel 2006 ha lavorato per tre mesi come artist in residence presso il sundaymorning@ekwc (centro europeo per la ceramica in Den Bosch,Olanda). La sua residenza si e' concentrata nella ricerca di forme che permetessero nella maniera piu' e ettiva la proiezione del suono; questo studio ha portato ad una curva logaritmica che somiglia moltissimo a quella di una tromba. Da questo periodo nasce la serie delle trombe in ceramica. Dal 1994 no ad ora, espone regolarmente il suo lavoro in gallerie, musei ed in altri avvenimenti culturali tra lItalia, lOlanda e resto d' Europa. Ha eseguito varie opere pubbliche in Olanda e dal 2000 il Comune della Citt dellAja gli ha commissionato Il progetto e lesecuzione della scultura che rappresenta il premio alla cultura di questa citt. Premio che consegnato ogni due anni. Dal 2007 docente presso la Design Academy di Eindhoven. Attualmente vive e lavora ad Amsterdam.

Pierluigi Pompei (Rome, 1969), studeerde aan l' Accademia delle Belle Arti in Rome, afdeling beeldhouwen, waar hij in 1993 cum laude afstudeerde. In 1995 ontving hij een studiebeurs van het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken in Rome voor de Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunst in Den Haag, waar hij in 1998 afstudeerde bij de afdeling beeldhouwen. Pierluigi Pompei gaat met zijn werk de confrontatie aan met de ruimte, waarbij architectonische elementen en geluid de hoofdbestanddelen vormen. Het oneindige en onmeetbare, grenzen en ruimtes die niet direct opgemerkt worden vormen hierbij het vertrekpunt. Om onze positie in de wereld te bepalen, fysiek, sociaal en psychologisch, zijn grenzen noodzakelijk, zowel letterlijk als guurlijk. Pompeis werk is een zoektocht naar een precieze de nitie van de ruimte, zowel voor zichzelf als voor de toeschouwer. Pompei werkt met verschillende materialen en technieken om zijn ideen vorm te geven. In 2006 werkte hij drie maanden als artist in residence bij het Europees Keramisch Werkcentrum in Den Bosch. Tijdens deze werkperiode leerde hij het materiaal keramiek goed kennen en ontstond de hoornserie. In zijn onderzoek naar de meest e ectieve akoestische vorm die het geluid de oneindigheid in projecteert zonder terug te kaatsen kwam hij bij een logaritmische curve terecht. Deze curve lijkt op de vorm van een trompet. Vanaf 1994 exposeert hij zijn werk in galeries, musea, en culturele manifestaties in Nederland, Itali, Duitsland, Frankrijk, Polen, Zwitserland en ook buiten Europa. Pompei ontvangt regelmatige opdrachten en maakt vanaf 2000, in opdracht van de gemeente Den Haag, de sculptuur voor de Cultuurprijs van de Gemeente Den Haag, die iedere twee jaar wordt uitgereikt. Geluidskunst maakt al enkele decennia deel uit van het domein van de hedendaagse kunst. Dankzij de Fluxus-beweging vanaf begin jaren zestig van de 20e eeuw is er een wisselwerking op gang gekomen tussen beeldend kunstenaars en componisten. Ook de keramiek heeft zich ontwikkeld. Eerst als commentaar op de kunstreceptie door Marcel Duchamp met zijn gesigneerde urinoir in 1917, later als een regulier materiaal dat door kunstenaars gebruikt kon worden en vanaf de 21e eeuw ook als zodanig is gewaardeerd, met bijvoorbeeld Grayson Perry als Turner prijswinnaar in 2004 en Ai Weiwei met een conceptueel-keramisch oeuvre. In Nederland wordt deze trend ingezet door het Europees Keramisch Werkcentrum dat vanaf begin jaren negentig van de twintigste eeuw in Den Bosch ruimte geeft aan de artistieke ontwikkeling en emancipatie van keramiek. Bekende kunstenaars als Tony Cragg, Anish Kapoor en Antony Gormley, komen in Den Bosch experimenteren en meteen krijgt keramiek een warm welkom in de belangrijkste Nederlandse musea. In een werkplaats als het EKWC, waar kennis met elkaar wordt gedeeld, het onbekende centraal staat en waar samenwerking gestimuleerd wordt is een avontuurlijk kunstenaar als Pierluigi Pompei goed op zijn plaats. Zijn interesse voor de ruimtelijke werking van een sculptuur brengt hem ertoe om de dimensie van geluid op te zoeken. Zo wordt een stap gezet waarmee de akoestische kwaliteit van keramiek op de proef wordt gesteld. Weliswaar zijn klankschalen en ocarinas eeuwenoud, de afgelopen eeuwen zijn er weinig pogingen gedaan om de klankkwaliteit van steengoed en porselein opnieuw centraal te stellen. Dat Pierluigi Pompei dat wel doet valt ten zeerste te prijzen. Pompei was op zoek naar een ruimtelijk verband tussen keramiek, geluid en omgeving. Hij kwam uit op trompetvormen. Zoals hij het zelf omschrijft: In mijn onderzoek naar de meest e ectieve akoestische vorm die het geluid de oneindigheid in projecteert zonder terug te kaatsen kwam ik bij een logaritmische curve terecht. Deze curve lijkt op de vorm van een trompet. Interessant aspect van deze vorm is dat het in zichzelf geluid bezit dat met de geringste luchtbeweging wordt bevrijd. De relatie die dit geluid vervolgens aangaat met de omgeving bepaalt de manier waarop wij de ruimte en het geluid waarnemen. Zijn hoorns bieden visueel veel mogelijkheden van presentatie. Whispers, ontstaan in nauwe samenwerking met het componisten duo Rob van Rijswijk (1971) en Jeroen Strijbos (1970), krijgt veel aandacht. Zij hebben speciaal voor de hoorns elektronische muziek gecomponeerd die vervolgens door de hoorns wordt uitgevoerd. Whispers is inmiddels op wereldtoernee en zal komende tijd onder meer in Frankrijk, Itali, Polen, China en Zuid-Korea gepresenteerd worden. Dutch composers Rob van Rijswijk (1971) and Jeroen Strijbos (1970) both graduated cum laude from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht in Music Technology, specialisation Electronic & Computer Composition and Applied Composition. They then achieved a Media MA in Electronic Composition. The hallmark of Strijbos & Van Rijswijks collective body of work is a combination of computer compositions and spatial elements, design, and innovative music technology. The composers seek out the zones where di erent disciplines meet and intersect. Sound is often more eloquent than tone. What fascinates is the interplay between concrete source materials, either raw or processed, and traditional harmonic and/or modal musical material. This is the foundation of their compositions. Strijbos & Van Rijswijk have provided the music for a large number of lm, dance and theatre projects, whereby the principle of mutual in uence between composer, director and choreographer has proved to be a recurring factor. They are awarded with a honorary mention for the PRIX Ton Bruynl. SoundSpots was selected for the "Bourges International Competitions 2009, Electroacoustic Music and Electronic Arts". Pierluigi Pompe (Rome, 1969) studied at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Rome, department of sculpture, where he graduated cum laude in 1993. In 1995 he received a scholarship from the Ministry of Foreign A airs in Rome to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. In 1998 he completed his studies at the department of sculpture. With his work Pierluigi Pompe confronts space, where architectural elements and sound form the main parts. The in nite and the immeasurable, frontiers, barriers and spaces that are not directly noticed, constitute the starting point. To de ne our physical, social and psychological position in the world, boarders are needed; so much literal as gurative. With his work Pompe searches into the precise de nition of space, for himself as well as for the spectator, using di erent materials and techniques. In 2006 he worked for three months as an artist in residence at the EKWC in Den Bosch. During this working period he acquainted himself well with the ceramic material and there the horn series originated. In his quest for the most e ective acoustic shape that projects sound, he came upon a logearithmic curve. This curve resembles the shape of a trumpet. From 1994 he shows his works in galleries, museums and cultural manifestations in Holland, Italy, Germany, France, Poland, Switzerland and outside Europe. Pompe receives commissions on a regular basis and makes, in commission of the municipality of The Hague, the sculpture for the Culture price of that city, which is rewarded every two years. From 2007 he teaches at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. Pierluigi Pompe lives and works in Amsterdam.
