Welcome to our beautiful city and to thefifteenth edition of the second season of“The Sibenik Times”. Some say it is thelowest form of comedy others hail it asa genius way of putting someone in theirplace. Love it or hate it sarcasm is a formof comedy that has been around sincethe times of the Bible. Sarcasm is, in ma-ny ways, the backbone of English humourand apart from the many comedy serials, plays and films that have used sarcasmI have always found that the sarcasmof the “street” is much funnier and poi-gnant. In fact the word “sarcasm” comesfrom the ancient Greek language andwhen translated literally means “to tearthe flesh” which pretty descriptively sumsup the word. The quick wit and speed ofmind is what makes sarcasm so hard toconquer and is probably one of the mainreasons why people with slightly slowerreactions despise it so. But if you’re willingto move on from everyday sarcasm to so-mething bigger and better, you will findit an art, with a noble tradition. Anywayenough of the theory the best way toshow the beauty of sarcasm is throughsome examples. The first one that springsto mind was when I was living in Londonand it was a time when the IRA was thre-atening the city with bombs. The LondonUnderground was on full alert for suspectpackages and police were confiscatingany left luggage. I was travelling on a tu-be to Victoria station and a security guardon the train noticed an unattended bag.As he approached the bag cautiously thepeople around it crept away and a circleformed. The officer slowly picked up thebag, then stuck his ear to it probably tohear if it was ticking, then surprisingly hestarted to shake it violently to the horrorof the crowd. One onlooker then shouted“That’s it shake it, if it doesn’t explode itcan’t be a bomb!” to which the onlyexplosion was of the passengers into fitsof laughter. Perfect sarcasm. I was toldanother good story the other day. U2 we-re playing a concert in Scotland and aftera few songs Bono asked the audience tobe silent. As Bono is not only a showmanbut also a political campaigner such dis-plays are not unusual. He then started toslowly and deliberately clap his hands, clap…clap…clap…, after a few claps hebellowed “Every time I clap my hands achild dies in Africa” the crowd looked on inawe until some witty Scot in the first rowshouted out “Stop clapping your handsthen!” Perfect sarcasm.

KNIN FIRM TO EXPORT NINE TONS OF HONEY TO CANADA
Minister of Tourism Damir Bajs said today (Weds) the number of tourist overnights haddeclined by six per cent in June compared to thesame month in 2008. Bajs added that the numberof domestic tourists’ overnights had increased by one per cent in June compared to the same periodin 2008. Bajs believes the start of the summer to-urist season has been unexpectedly good, Tportal website has reported. Bajs said: “The most-impor-tant tourism months are ahead of us. Looking atthe numbers, we can be less concerned than ourcompetition. We can cure our problems with anaspirin, honey and tea, whereas other tourism co-untries need to go in for a serious examination.”In the first six months of 2009, the number of fo-reign-tourist overnights declined by seven percent, while the total number of overnights dropped by three per cent.Croatia is one of the holiday destinations that is proving more of an attraction toGerman vacationers than Tenerife, it has been suggested. According to the tourismcouncillor at the Spanish island’s popular Arona region, Angel David Herrera, this ishaving an effect on one of Tenerife’s main markets. Turkey, Egypt and the Caribbe-an have also proved to be attractive holiday options for people from Germany, thetravel expert explained to the Fortnightly Tenerife News. Croatia’s attractiveness forGerman tourists was increased recently when it was announced that police officersfrom Germany will be helping local officials patrol the popular Istria region in July and August. The Earth Times reported that their presence will help visitors who runinto difficulty during their stay. Anyone staying in Istria accommodation betweenSeptember 1st and November 30th may also be able to enjoy one of many TruffleDays, which have been organised to celebrate the local delicacy of the area.Croatia is a top world destinationfor adventure, according to the Ame-rican weekly “People.” The magazine, which has a circulation of 3.75 million, published on 6 July an article entitled“Top Adventure Trips” by well-known journalist Stephanie Michaels. Michaelsrecommended to adventurers three desti-nations: Croatia, the US state of Montanaand the Republic of Costa Rica. The Ame-rican journalist was especially astonishedby Hvar Island, which she called “Party Island.” Hvar is in the “must be seen”category. The daily Vecernji list has re-ported that such free advertising is morethan welcome for Croatian tourism at atime of recession. Croatia had 20,000fewer American tourists in the first sixmonths of 2009 compared to the sameperiod last year. Api-Herba, a small herbal company inKnin in Sibenik-Knin county, is planningto export nine tons of green honey to Ca-nada. Api-Herba owner and herbalist Pero Anticevic, who is negotiating with anot-her company in Japan, said today (Weds)he was very satisfied foreign companieshad recognized his products. Anticevic told the daily Vecernji list: “Ihave received an offer from a Canadianbusinessman who wants to purchase ninetons of acacia and wild-flower honey. He will arrive in Knin in ten days, and we willsign a contract.” Anticevic has asked alllocal bee-keepers in cooperate in fillingthat order. A group of Japanese busines-smen will arrive in Zagreb on 14 July tomeet with Anticevic. Last year Api-Herbastarted to export its product “propolis,” aresinous mixture honey-bees collect fromtree buds, sap flows and other botanicalsources, to the Japanese firm Suwa In-ternational.It would seem that those who head to Croatiaon holiday appear to enjoy their accommodation- as visitors are staying in the country for longer.Tourism minister Damir Bajs has spoken today about how people are taking lengthier Croatiatravel trips in 2009, compared to previous years.Mr Bajs was generally confident about the tourismfigures in the Balkan nation, suggesting to Reutersthat guest numbers are at "very acceptable levels".With tourism accounting for close to 20 per centof Croatia's gross domestic product, it is importantthat people continue to visit the country. Beauti-ful beaches, historic sights and traditionally hot weather throughout the summer mean that it is apopular choice among European holidaymakers.Commenting on the latest data, Mr Bajs said: "Wehad expected a drop and for the moment it is ...something we can live with. However, key summermonths are still ahead of us and the number of last-minute arrivals will determine a lot."

Warnings of traffic pile-ups on the southern Austrian roads were issued last week as people from the central European nationand others who were passing through descended on Croatia. The Austrian Times reports that this time of year regularly sees morecars hit the country’s roads as people head away on their Croatiaholidays. A Croatia vacation and trips to Italy are the two mostpopular holidays for the people of Austria, the publication said.Meanwhile, the nation’s geographical position also means that carsfrom neighbouring countries such as Germany, the Netherlandsand the Czech Republic also use Austrian motorways to reachthe Croatian and Italian coasts. A recent poll held by the news-paper discovered that the majority of its readers think “fleeingthe country for holidays abroad” is the top thing to do during thesummer months.
