17 - It is the thesis of the present work that the newer evidence from the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hammadi texts enables us to put early Jewish Christianity into better focus, both directly and by awakening a fuller appreciation for the significance of other materials for the study of this phenomenon, and that therefore scholarship is in a better position than before to work responsibly
in the field of early Jewish Christian christology on such issues as
(1) distinctiveness and development, (2) continuity and discontinuity,
and (3) underlying convictions and circumstantial expressions.
