waspublishedin1984,BillHillierandhiscolleaguesatUniversityCollegeLondonhavebeenconductingresearchonhowspacefeaturesintheformandfunctioningofbuildingsandcities.Akeyoutcomeistheconceptof‘spatialconguration’—meaningrelationswhichtakeaccountofotherrelationsinacomplex.Newtechniqueshavebeendevelopedandappliedtoawiderangeofarchitecturalandurbanproblems.Theaimofthisbookistoassemblesomeofthisworkandshowhowitleadsthewaytoanewtypeoftheoryofarchitecture:an‘analytic’theoryinwhichunderstandinganddesignadvancetogether.Thesuccessofcongurationalideasinbringingtolightthespatiallogicofbuildingsandcitiessuggeststhatitmightbepossibletoextendtheseideastootherareasofthehumanscienceswhereproblemsofcongurationandpatternarecritical.
