Asthe20thcenturyendsandweapproachthebeginningofanewmillennium,futuregenerationswilllookbackandrecalltheleav-ingofourhomeplanetasadefiningmomentinthehistoryofhumankind.ThestoryofApollohasbeentoldandretoldmanytimesbythosefortunateenoughtohaveexperiencedspacetravelfirsthand--theastronautsthemselves.ThosewhomanagedtoleavethecradleoftheEarthandwalkuponthesurfaceoftheMoonofferauniqueperspectivesharedfirsthandbyonlyahandfulofpeoplechosentorepresenthumankindintheculminationofthisgreatadventure.Aswereflectonthe30thanniversaryofApollo'sfirstlanding,weshouldnotoverlookotheraccountsofthismonumen-talachievementasofferedbythoserepresentingthehalfamillionpeopleassociatedwiththeprogram.Duringthe1960s,thesepeoplejoinedinanationalefforttobringtocompletionPresidentJohnEKennedy'svisionoflandingAmericansontheMoonandreturningthemsafelytoEarthbeforetheendofthedecade.ForaprojectasmassiveastheApolloprogram,historymaydistanceitselftotheextentwheremoderninterpretationdistillsafeelingthatsucheventstookplacewithoutextensivehumaninvolvement.Nothingcouldbefurtherremovedfromthetruth.Throughtheverbalaccountsofferedbytheoralhistoriessuchaspresentedinthisvolume,wearereintroducedtothecriticalhumanfactorwhichistheessenceofanyhistory.PeoplemadeApollohappenanditisimportanttopreservetheirthoughts,feel-ings,andrecollectionsforfuturegenerations.TheoralhistoriespresentedinthisvolumeofferasampleofwhatNASAhasdonetopreservethestoryofApolloaspartofournation'shumanspace-flightheritage.TheaccountsincludedinthisbookareasmallsamplingofthelargenumberoforalhistoriesthathavebeenconductedundertheauspicesoftheNASAhistoryprogram,sincenearthebegin-ningoftheAgency.TheyalsorepresentthemanypersonalcontributionsmadeduringProjectApollo,thesinglelargest
