W
hat a busy and exciting time o year! Jesuit colleges and universities are nishing up nal exams, hosting commence-ment ceremonies and wishing their graduating seniors a ond arewell. At AJCU, there is no shortage o activity asseveral projects are in the works and new summer intiatives are on the horizon. In the President’s Oce, Fr. Currie is working on developing new enterprises, like the
 Jesuit Commons
, and continues to guideand acilitate ongoing AJCU programs, including the Seminar on Higher Education Leadership and the Iraqi Student Project. He also has delivered speeches on a number o subjects related to Jesuit higher education, composed letters o support or highereducation to Members o Congress, and met with our various AJCU conerences, all while nding time to give the commencementaddress at Le Moyne College on May 17, one week aer receiving an honorary degree rom Spring Hill College.Cyndy Littleeld, AJCU ederal relations director, is working steadastly on negotiated rulemaking, hoping to gain some winsor Jesuit higher education in the general issues in itle IV, which addresses year-round Pell grants and job placement require-ments. Next week, she will monitor the reconciliation process, in which the goals or education under the Obama administrationand student aid issues will be reviewed.Te JesuitNE team o Dr. Richard Vigilante, Cindy Bonni-Hotlosz, Dr. Kathleen Snyder, Deene Yenchochic, Rita Sage andStacey Doyle, is working consistently to develop online courses and programs or Jesuit insitutions and is in the midst o projectswith Fordham, Gonzaga and Loyola University Chicago. Dr. Snyder, the JesuitNE director o curriculum development will hosta ew CADE (Competency Assessment in Distributed Education) workshops this summer, in which she will work with aculty to create online courses using the CADE model. Dr. Snyder is also helping to spearhead an online nursing initiative with FloridaCommunity Colleges (FCC), in which graduates o FCC programs will have the opportunity to continue their nursing educationthrough one o 13 online programs oered by six Jesuit institutions: Creighton, Gonzaga, Loyola New Orleans, Regis, Spring Hill, and Wheeling Jesuit. You can learn more about this initiative by visiting the website, http://www.ajcunet.edu/Distance-Education---Florida-Nursing-Initiative.Anne Garner, our director o administration, is keeping us all on solid nancial ooting, while gathering books that will bereviewed this summer or the Alpha Sigma Nu Book Awards (the winners are announced on October 1). Deanna Howes, ourmanager o inormation services, is working on updates or the AJCU 2009-10 directory, gathering inormation or the AJCU actles, and developing the weekly AJCU Higher Ed News alerts, in which news about our campuses is shared with our members andthe public. I you are not currently receiving the alerts and would like to do so, please contact Deanna at dhowes@ajcunet.edu.In the area o communications, I am pleased to report that the 2nd Annual AJCU Marketing and Communications Leader-ship Summit, held last month at Faireld University, was a success. Highlights included a panel discussion with higher educationreporters rom
Te New York imes
, the
Chronicle o Higher Education
and the Catholic News Service, and a talk by Fr. Currieon aith and politics, ollowed by a discussion on the Obama-Notre Dame issue. Tough not a Jesuit institution, Notre Dame isexperiencing what many Catholic colleges go through each year as they choose a campus speaker. Surely, Jesuit institutions haveexperienced their own challenges in this area. One o the positive aspects stemming rom this situation is that it has sparkeddialogue on an issue that continues to have a lot o gray area and no easy solutions. It is our hope that the dialogue continues, butcomes without the bitterness and vitriol and is delivered in a more civilized manner.Other communications projects in the works include a review and update o the AJCU white papers, a study/survey on women’sleadership at Jesuit institutions, a review and urther development o the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight initiative, and the development o an enhanced version o the publication,
Local, National and Global: Jesuit Higher Education in the 21
st
Century.
 Tis last issue o
Connections
or the 2008–09 academic year ocuses on how Jesuit institutions are engaging their local com-munities and beyond. Tis is something our Jesuit campuses do well as they place a high priority on reaching out to the citizensbeyond their campus gates. We hope you will be inspired by the outreach eorts proled here. And speaking o inspiration...I know Fr. Currie shared the news o my daughter’s birth with you back in February. OliviaGrace is a true joy and a ascinating little person. Tere is nothing quite like the miracle o new lie, and I am grateul to have beengiven this great gi. Tank you or all o your well wishes over this last year and or all o your support and prayers. With best wishes or a most enjoyable summer,Melissa Collins Di Leonardo
