Whenever I would drive our children to school, as they were getting out of the car, I would put my hand on their head and say, The Lord is with you. If they werent mad at me that morning, they would usually reply, And also with you. You would think that little ritual would be embarrassing to our children in front of their friends. However, I remember one morning when I was particularly distracted. As my son was walking toward the school, he suddenly turned from his friends and ran back to the car to tell me, You forgot to bless me this morning. There is power in sending our children off into the world with a word of affirmation. Remembering Jesus encouragement to His disciples, My peace I leave with you, my peace I give you, is a great comfort as we deal with lifes many challenges. This newsletter contains poems written by some of our boys and girls as part of a language arts assignment. As youll see, there is power in family rituals, and even small things have become forever imprinted in these childrens memories. The children and their families were excited to learn the poems would be featured and that their stories are being told. Thank you for your continued support. Peace be with you and your families. Faithfully,

R eflections

I am from the print in the wall of my basement being thrown off a toy Jeep From shaking my birthday card envelopes to see if they contained cash and dark olive skin I am from Burly, Zay, and "Big Ma" From, Keep your confidence, and Be yourself. I am from going to a Southern Baptist church

Where I'm From

"I think that writing allows students to deal with and think about their experiences."
Language Arts Teacher Eagle Ranch School Pictured above with students

Wearing high heels with my pencil skirt Im from the city of Roswell, From German, Cherokee Indian, and Irish descent From T-bone steak, homemade eggnog, and stuffed turkey on Thanksgiving, I am from the devastation and broken heart of my daddys passing, I am from the family of two older sisters and a mom. I am from the time machine and its magical remote that so sadly doesnt exist, I am from a life filled with mistakes, but empty of regrets. From many cherished memories and telling everybody now that you just have to stay strong, think positive, accept whats been done, making the best of it and hope for a better future.

The Eagle Ranch School year has begun, and the students are already showing progress on both an emotional and academic level.
Recently, students completed a writing assignment in their Language Arts class where they followed a template to create a poem entitled, Where I'm From. This initial poetry assignment was a great way to both help and encourage the students to break out of their shells and start to sort through their feelings and emotions. It was also a great way for their teacher, Amanda Swindall, to gain insight into where her students came from and connect with them on a deeper level. I think that writing allows students to deal with and think about their experiences. Allowing the students an outlet to express themselves through writing is important, because it creates a space for them to see that they have a voice and that voice matters, said Swindall. I recently had a chance to talk with them about how they are really courageous, because they have a choice. They are choosing to process the experiences in their lives and that is a courageous thing to do.

My poem kind of sums up my crazy family and life. Im sure my mom will wish I hadnt mentioned the print I left on the wall when my sisters made me crash my toy jeep. But thats my family for you! Weve had some rough times and a lot of fun times. Lifes a climb, but I dont want to live with regrets.

Amanda Swindall

I am from blanket From drawing and music I am from Athens big red brick house Moving many, many times to be near my daddy I am from playing indoors because of ticks outside I am from ham, mashed potatoes, and the turkey at my granddads farm From Kirsta and Matt, and Mike Moon Pie Wilson I am from go hunting with each other and play in the pool and outside From, Mara brush your hair and brush your teeth I am from going to a home church in our living room. We read the bible and hang out, sing songs. Im from Athens, GA, and my ancestors from Holland and Columbia From always having chocolate cake and muffins on my birthday I am from eating ham, turkey, and mashed potatoes on holidays From my first day of pre-K full of excitement to the first time my mom showed me how to put on make-up I am from the pictures on the living room wall and my special memory box They bring back memories of troubling times and good times, too.

I am from basketball, from Nike and Wilson, I am from the noisy, loud arguments of my mom and I a happy and rough home. I am from the outdoors countless backyards, too many to remember, converging into one and the mountain trails of Hot Springs, North Carolina. I am from neighborhood parties at my house and watching The Christmas Story movie every year on Christmas day, from Bill and Debi and Heather. I am from the bickering and fun times from red head and carrot top. I am from Christianity Baptist Church every Sunday. Im from Chicago and Evergreen Park, turkey and casserole, from the headaches and fighting. I am from pumpkin patches. Bringing back happy memories.

I love writing, especially songs. Writing is kind of how I get my feelings out on paper. Then I rip out the pages of my notebook and crumple them up instead of getting angry with somebody. I use writing as a way to channel my emotions.

I enjoyed reminding myself about what I did when I was little. It brought back lots of memories, good and bad. It was somewhat therapeutic to be able to get out feelings on paper.

I am from my pink and green polka-dot bed sheets from a worn-down home on the corner lot of the street, Dirty, un-kept, broken. I am from pine trees, and muscadines in the big backyard, I am from celebrating holidays with just my dad and myself, and big noses. From Carson, Denver, and Amber, I am from a family that parties cookouts every Fourth of July, and a family thats laidback. From, Dont do that! to, See what happens if you do. I am from going to a Baptist church occasionally a soul that needs to be washed going through the motions. I am from Flowery Branch, Georgia and hard workers, From homemade rich, chocolate gravy poured over biscuits usually burnt when my Mimi forgets them, burnt in the oven. From my dad trapping his car in a newly built fence, me trying to tell him, him noticing and tearing the fence back down. I am from taking pictures in front of the cross at church with my dad in my dance costume Looking at that picture every day.

Charle
I am from hot cereal, from Power Rangers and Legos. I am from the Victorian house loud from the noise of the train. I am from the shady, big, sprawling, Elephant Ears. I am from the joyful cheers of my Grandparents and cousins on Thanksgiving in the Buggy House.

I like poetry. I do some writing on my own. Writing this poem brought back a lot of memories. I especially remember the muscadines in my backyard. My dad used to go all the time in the backyard and pick muscadines. I still remember the smell.

I am from the game of Trivial Pursuit, with cake and coffee, From, Sit up straight, and, Chew with your mouth closed. I am from Sunday worship at a Baptist church every Sunday and church dinners for lunch afterwards. Im from the small, quiet town of Sandersville and my grandparents in Milledgeville, From the green beans and roast beef, From my grandfathers story about how he had gotten run over by a tractor. I am from the photos from Yellowstone, where every moment was joyful. The pictures in photo albums bring back pleasant memories.

My mom really liked my poem. My grandmas going to put it in a frame on fancy paper and hang it up.

I am from hot wings From Nike and the cheap red fire truck I am from the old, yellow brick house in the neighborhood The big backyard where we played tackle football and soccer the ground covered with sticks I am from the dark basement where I watched funny movies sitting on the brown couch from going out of town for Thanksgiving with my family to visit relatives and eating pecan pie from Uncle James, and Aunt Catherine, and my brother, Kevin I am from watching Monday night football with my cousin and working hard I am from to a Baptist church every Sunday with my grandmother And wearing dress clothes to the church I am from small town Albany, Georgia and my great-grandmother who lived to be one-hundred From ham, homemade macaroni and cheese on Thanksgiving, and ordering Papa Johns pizza on Super Bowl Sundays I am from my mom going to jail when I was little and my older twin sisters who died at birth I am from the forgotten pictures in my grandmothers spare coat-room That only show the good times.

I am from the old, brown coffee table, From Proactive, and Mary Kay. I am from the roses around the house, growing in manicured flower beds, Beautiful, old brick, home by the ocean the waves could be heard crashing against the shore on stormy days. I am from the purple hydrangeas, and the happy, yellow daisies. I am from loud Hispanic celebrations, and loving family, From Nycole, and Josh, and Ashley. I am from the restful, and playful, from caring, and, You are my sunshine.

I am from Christian, from short-term missions trips to South Africa. I am from Ridgecrest and Chocolate cakes and fried chicken From the marriage of my grandparents, Cheerful and wonderful and My being born, painful but worth it. I am from the UCLA buildings of Los Angeles, A moment to remember for life.

I liked remembering the trips we make every year for Thanksgiving.

My favorite part of the whole poem is You are My Sunshine. My mom used to sing that song to me when I was little. We grew apart because she was always trying to please my stepdad. But now that my stepdad is not in our lives and were here, I feel like so many things have changed and I feel like I cant thank anybody but God, because Hes who made all this come true.

In Loving Memory of Mr. Loyd Strickland

I was first introduced in 1982 to Loyd Strickland by a mutual friend in the Hall County area who described him as a generous, Christian man. We met in his office and he asked a lot of questions some of which I knew the answers to, some I didnt. He was very kind throughout our conversation, but I left his office not knowing how he really felt about Eagle Ranch, the venture I was undertaking. I didnt hear from Mr. Strickland for over a month. I was housesitting in Powder Springs, northwest of Atlanta, and had to be out of that home in a week. I only had $50 to my name and I was on the verge of quitting my dream to start a childrens home. Ironically, the next morning I got a call at 8:14 a.m. It was Mr. Strickland. Im not even sure how he got my number. He asked what I was doing. I told him that I had been praying, to which he replied, Son, get off your knees, my foundations going to help you. You need to get back up here to Hall County.

Loyd Strickland (left) & Vince Dooley (right). They were Eagle Ranch's first two 'Eagle Award' winners.

Over the years, Mr. Strickland became a friend and mentor to me and a great advocate for Eagle Ranch. He was always willing to take the time to share his wisdom and counsel. Mr. Strickland was a man of great vision. I saved some of the notes from our meetings, and it is amazing how predictive he was of the Ranchs future a girls ranch, an on-campus school, and our Wings Initiative (our effort to help start or retool existing programs to best practice). He shared these expansion scenarios with me as much as five to ten years before they actually became a reality. I wonder if he knew there needed to be a home for children in crisis in Northeast Georgia before I did! We are truly honored that the Ranch will always be remembered as part of Loyd Stricklands rich legacy.
