A Year in Bank Supervision:2008 and a Few of Its Lessons 3
2008 was a year of crisis for the U.S. financial services indus- try. In 2008 and shortly thereafter, more than $13 trillion intemporary loans, liability and asset guarantees, and other government programs supporting financial institutions were put in place or announced, and policymakers focused atten- tion on potential improvements to financial regulation. This article presents a chronology of the more significant events and developments affecting financial institutions during 2008 and concludes with a discussion of areas of supervisory focus going forward.
Remote Deposit Capture: A Primer 19
Remote Deposit Capture (RDC) technology is helping to improve the efficiency of how banks process check deposits. RDC allows financial institution customers to “deposit” checks electronically at remote locations, usually in the customers’ offices, for virtually instant credit to their accounts. This article discusses the development and recent growth in the use of RDC, identifies risks to financial institutions that offer this service, and highlights appropriate risk management strategies.
