very year the Jazz in the Valley Board of Directors works in conjunction with membersof the community to organize the details of this exciting event. During last year’s festi-val, hundreds of people helped set up and take down the festival site, sell tickets at thebox office and venues, staff the beer garden, and market our posters, brochures andT-shirts. It is incredible that so many people give their time and talent to make the event the bestit can be. Every element is carefully planned and executed by teams of volunteers.Festival volunteers are the human force of each event. Our volunteers are the ambassadorsof our festival and our community — a job they take seriously and with great pride. Volunteershave fun being part of the event —a true reflection of what Jazz in the Valley is all about. We want to extend our sincerest thanks to all our volunteers, past present and future. Youmake Jazz in the Valley happen!

ver the few years since LouisPain and Sweet Baby James joined forces as King Louis& Baby James, this exciting band hasgenerated plenty of buzz. The Ore-gonian’s Marty Hughley has calledthe band “stellar” and “top shelf,”and rated their performance at the2005 Waterfront Park Blues festival“exemplary.”The line-up starts with Louis Pain. As a key member of the Paul deLay Band and Mel Brown’s popular B-3Organ Group, Pain has led the Portlandrevival of the Hammond organ sound. And Sweet Baby James has been one of the most soulful vocalists in the North- west since the heyday of Portland’slegendary Williams Avenue scene inthe ‘50s. Filling out this exciting groupare the soulful Renato Caranto on sax;drummer Micah Kassell, and the latePaul deLay’s longtime guitarist PeterDammann.King Louis & Baby James will offerup their own brand of fun that’s sureto keep your feet moving during Jazzin the Valley. They are slated to play atThe River @ Grand Central Friday, July 24 from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
