I first arrived in Morocco in September 2007. It was one of the most amazing times of mylife – and it was made that way by the people. As soon as they realized that I knew more than afew phrases from a tourist guidebook, it was like I was a lost brother they’d finally found. Evenshopkeepers in the old medina of Fes, the Queen of Cities, usually known as voraciousbargainers, would stop their day and chat with me for an hour, free of charge! I was also invitedto more houses for couscous than I can remember, and came to enjoy the happy shock onpeople’s faces when they realized a non-Moroccan was trying to learn their language.Aside from writing language textbooks, I am a Materials Engineer specializing in the fieldof the chemistry of alternative cements. I enjoy making home-made sausage, amassing anenormous collection of stylish hats, and complaining about how young people act these days.
