“Green ICT – making it FOSSible”

Green ICT: Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become an irreplaceable component
of practically every aspect of human activity with its impact buttressed by the omnipresent internet. While
the developed world thrives on ICT capabilities, the developing economies are using it for leapfrogging
into new levels of technological advancement. Modern ICT systems are made up of a complicated mix of
people, networks, hardware and software. As their spread is increasing rapidly, issues such as energy,
environment and related aspects have to be addressed ensure user satisfaction without damaging the
ecosystem. Green ICT aims to study and practice use of computers and other ICT resources efficiently
laying stress on factors like reduction of hazardous components, maximization of energy efficiency,
enhancing re-cyclability and biodegradability.

About the workshop: This one-day workshop aims to focus on the use of FOSS (Free/open source
software) – concept as well as solutions – to address the issues related to Green ICT. This workshop will
explore, discuss and plan for Green ICT initiatives based on open access for information, technology,
resources and education for the benefit of our society and economy. This event is jointly organized by IIT
Madras, NRCFOSS -- National Resource Centre for Free/Open Source Software (set up by C-DAC,
Chennai and AU-KBC Research Center), National Informatics Centre, Computer Society of India, IEEE
Computer Society and IITM Alumni Association.

The workshop will include keynote addresses on “Green ICT”, “Different aspects of openness in a digital
age”, sessions on “Open Source – a platform for innovation and a public resource” dealing with
opportunities / potential / usage in business, government, society; “Green ICT – overview, issues”, ICT
Solutions covering ICT Tools to support for Green Movement”, “FOSS Hardware solutions like Thin
Clients” “FOSS tools and packages for sustainable urban development, environmental challenges”, Case
studies and demo of FOSS products on Green ICT, and Panel Discussions on “FOSS focus on Green ICT
: plan for study / implementation” and “OSS Community Development”

Target Audience: The workshop is designed to appeal to a wide variety of participants and include:
software developers, users, researchers, policy makers, trainers and students from academia, industry and
government.

Venue & Timings: The workshop will be held at the IC & SR Auditorium, IIT Madras on Saturday, 11th
Jul 2009 from 9.00 a.m to 5.00 p.m.

Registration: There is no participation fee. However, the admission is on prior registration and first cum
