COURSE SYLLABUS

Department of Physical Sciences

Course Informations important to analytical chemistry and application of classical analytical methods of analysis (gravimetric, volumetric). An introduction to the basic instrumental methods of analysis (spectrophotometry, potentiometry, voltammetry, and chromatography) is also given. The student must have successfully completed and passed five units of General and Inorganic Chemistry (Chem 11) and three units of Math 14 in order to enroll in Chem 26. Course Objectives At the end of the course, the student should be able to: Understand the basic concepts in analytical chemistry, especially the different methods of chemical analyses; Develop an appreciation for the difficult task of judging the accuracy and precision of experimental data and to show how these judgments can be sharpened by the application of statistical methods; Develop the skills necessary to solve analytical problems quantitatively; Know and appreciate the applications and limitations of the different quantitative methods. Lecture Coverage 1st Long Exam Period 1. Introduction a. Nature of Analytical Chemistry b. Role Analytical Chemistry c. Introduction to Quantitative Analysis 2. Examinations Exams will be announce a week before the scheduled date. All of the three exams will be two hours long. The points in the exam may or may not total with 100 and therefore, what will be recorded is the percentage (e.g. 125/130 is 96.15% and 45/80 is 56.25%, the values 96.15% and 56.25% are the grades that will reflect on my record).

The final grade for this course will be computed based on the following criteria: 40% will come from the average of your two best scores of the three exams, 25% will come from the quizzes and problem sets, and 35% will come from the final exam. If you have a running grade of 75% or better in total before the final exam, you will be exempted from taking the final exam. You should always hit the 55% mark in all instances.

Calculators Use of a calculator during examination is permitted as long as they are not shared between students. The latter will be considered as cheating. Programmable calculators must have their memories cleared prior to use in an exam. Academic Dishonesty Cheating in all forms will not be condoned and is punishable by a grade of 5.0. As per university policy, do nothing is not an option for cheating instances. Remember HONOR and EXCELLENCE always. Email I will send you important information, files, reminders, nags, etc., during the course of the semester. You should check your email regularly. If you email me, kindly include Chem 26 someplace in the subject header. Putting Chem 26 in the subject header will filter your important email to my course inbox, so that I can attend to it as soon as possible. For consultations, send me an email to arrange meeting.
