Towards Just International Relations Theory: Hans Morgenthau’s

Classical Realism and the Problem of Justice
Supervisor: Dr. James Muir (DPhil Oxford)This project examines the theory of political realism as described by HansMorgenthau in his
Politics Among Nations
and contrasts it with the liberal theoriesof Michael Doyle and John Rawls. I develop three criteria (principled moral judgment, equality of application, and concrete behavior guidance) that aninternational relations theory must meet to be considered just. The successes andfailures of realism and liberalism with respect to these three criteria are noted and a‘reformed realism’ is presented as an alternative based on the work ReinholdNiebuhr.September 2005 –
