Introduction
Twitter: the micro-blogging phenomenon that’staking the net by storm.
Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service created by then Cornellstudent Jack Dorsey that enables its users to send and read other users' updatesknown as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users whohave signed up to receive them. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circleof friends (delivery to everyone being the default). Users can send and receiveupdates via the Twitter website, SMS, RSS (receive only), or through applicationssuch as Tweetie, Twitterrific, Twitterfon, TweetDeck and feedalizr. The service is free to use over the web, but using SMS may incur phone services provider fees.
Since it was founded in 2006, Twitter has increased in popularity, mainly due to thelarge number of celebrities using it (see
tinyurl.com/7n766n
for a list). The serviceis available on computers, phones, iPods, and more. The service works by askingeach user one simple question every time they publish an update (“tweet”):
whatare you doing?
Other users can ‘follow’ you (ie recive your tweets), and you canfollow them. Alternatively, you can protect your account so that only people youapprove can see your updates. For instructions on how to do all of this, and more, read on.
