by Rick Frese
Affton High School girls volleyballcoach Brian Boehm has challenged histeam to produce a 24-victory season. Affton is off to a 17-4 start throughOct. 8. Three of Affton’s four losseshave come to Lutheran South, BishopDuBourg and Windsor, all statecontenders.“I feel like we could have won any of those games,” Boehm said.
The Cougars gure to challenge
for the Class 3 District 3 Tournamenttitle at Lutheran South later thismonth – an event Boehm regards asthe toughest district in the state.Lutheran South and BishopDuBourg should receive the top twoseeds, with Affton and Notre Damegaining one of the next two spots,Boehm predicts.“I told my players, ‘If we win 24matches, we will have a successfulseason, no matter when our seasonends,’” he said.Boehm said Affton’s best chance towin the district title will happen in thenext two seasons. The coach believeshis team has the experience and talentto compete at the highest level. The team’s top player is juniorCarson Talley, a 6-foot, three-yearstarting middle hitter. Talley playsyear-round for High Performance,a top-level select team. Talley leads Affton in kills (155), blocks (86) anddigs (97). She is tied with freshmanoutside hitter Emily Comer with 31service aces.“She’s a natural,” Boehm said.,referring to Talley. “She’s a consistentplayer.”Senior outside Ali Harman, a four-year starter, is second in kills with 78,24 more than Comer – a “great all-around player,” Boehm said.Junior setter Olivia Owensleads Affton in assists (336). Juniordefensive specialist Victoria Smithleads in service points (128), followedby Comer (105), Harman (93), Talley(81) and Owens (80).Smith is second in digs with 94,followed by Comer (84) and juniorlibero Courtney Stiefvater (78). Seniormiddle hitter Katie Tevebaugh and junior middle hitter Alayna Chapieare other key contributors.“We’ve got the talent,” Boehm said.“I feel like if we play our game, we canplay with any team both physicallyand mentally. I thought we had apromising year. If we play our bestgame, we can beat anybody.”
 Affton’s nal two regular season
matches are on the road against topsquads, Windsor at 7 p.m. on Oct. 14,and Bishop DuBourg at 5 p.m. on Oct.15.“We’ll see where we are at for usand see what our chances are reallylike,” Boehm said.
