ADAB AD ABIHU.BY REV. W. THISTLETHWAITE, M.A.,Levit. X. 1, 2, 3.And adah and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put frethereiuy and put incense tJiereon, and offeredstrange fire hefore the Lord, which he com^manded them not. And there went oyi firefrom the Lordy and devoured them, andthey died before the Lord. Then Mosessaid unto Aaron, T%is is it that the Lordspakcy sayinffy I will be sanctifed in themthat come nigh me, and before all the peo^ple I wiU be ghrífied. And Aaron heldhis peace. We read here of one of those áwful visi-tations by which God has in different agesmanifested his resentment against sin, andhis power to punish it. Generally he bearethADAB AD ABIHU. 149long; and hence too many are found whopresume upon impunity, naj^ who not onlydo not fear and repent óf their first sin, butrepeat it again and again^ aud even proceedto other and greater transgressions. Thus wefind it written, " Because sentence againstan evil work i^ not executed speedily, there-fore the heart of the sons of men is fully setin them to do evil." But the scríptures alsorecord instances in which God has not un-frequently exhibited his ríghteous indignationagainst sinners and their transgressions in amanner which cannot be mistaken, and whichought to operate as a powerful waming to allwho read or hear of them. The present isone of them. May God shed a holy fear

of himself upon all our hearts, as we con-sider it.I. Let us, in the first place, consider whoand what they were upon whom this judg-ment was executed. They were adab andAbihu, the two eldest sons of Aaron. Fromthe expectations which are naturally enter-tained of the eldest sons, they would beregarded by Aaron as the hopes of his family.150 ADAB AD ABIHU.And not only so, but they had already beenmiich distinguíshed hy God. These two hadbeen expressly pennitted by name to go witlitheir father to Mount Sinai, when God was ,about to deliver the law to him. They wereadmitted neaier than the rest of the congre-gation ; they had a glorious n^nifestation of the Lord : we read in Exodus, the twenty-fourth chapter and ninth verse, " Then wentup Moses and Aaron, adab and Abihu, andsevjenty of the elders of Israel : and they sawthe God of Israel : and there was under hisfeet as it were a paved work of a sapphire^tone, and as it were the body of heaven inhis clearness." What a privilege was thiswhich these young men had enjoyed ! Howabidíng a sense of the majesty of God shouldit have impréssed upon them !But besides this> they had just been conse-crated, along with their two younger brothers,Eleazar aud Ithamar, to be the priests of theLord, while their father had been exalted tothe dignity of high priest, to which officeadab, as the first-born, might look forwardto succeed. They had just been assístíngADAB AD ABIHU. 151him and M oses in the offeiing of the sacri-

fices for themselves and the people, as wesaw in the last sermon ; thej had heard thesolemn hlessing pronounced ; they had seeuthe glorj of the Lord as it appeared to allthe people ; they had beheld ^e fire comeoot irom before the Lord, and consume theofferings which had been placed upon thealtar; they had heard the people shout for joy, and seen them prostrate themselves be-fore the Lord in the deepest reverence. Howmuch more should they have been filled withall devout emotions ! How inteuselj fixedshould their minds have been on the great-ness of God, and of his peculiar grace tothem ! How spiritual and holj should havebeen the joy which filled their hearts uponthat interesting occasion^ full of such dis-tinguishing honour to them ! And howprofonnd should have been their humilityunder a sense of their own insufficiency forthe great office to which they had now beencalled ! With all such feelings surely theirhearts should have been entirely occupied !These then were the men, such their office.152 ADAB AD ABIHU.such the things which thej had seen andheard, upon whom this great judgment of theLord was executed.II. Let us now enquire, in the secondplace, what was the sin which they had com-mitted. It ^dently consisted in a hasty, unbidden entrance on their office, with greatirregularity in their performance of a partof it^ especially in one particular. Weare to remember that the dispensatíon inwhich they were appointed to officiate wassuch that eyery thing in it was minutely spe-cified^ and all was to be done according to thedirectíons given and the pattem shewn toM oses in the mount. ow these young men,wUhout waiting for instructíons from Mosesand Aaron respectíng their dutíes, and the pro-
