Flushing, Queens! F
A Strong, Diverse & Sustainable Community
Unfortunately, the last recession hurt our business community and many residents remain jobless despite a wealth of skills and experiences. New York Citys unemployment rate still hovers around 9% higher than the national average and thats only counting those still looking for a job.
Welcome to
lushing is home to one of the most diverse and dynamic neighborhoods in New York City. From the 1657 Remonstrance against Governor Stuyvesants persecution of religious minorities to our role as a station on the Underground Railroad, Flushing has welcomed people of different cultures and faiths from around the world. Today, Flushing is a modern metropolis with an international business community that speaks 21 languages and a commercial district that has grown to be the fourth largest in the City.
In December 2011, we launched the ONE FLUSHING Community Economic Development Center to comprehensively address the challenges faced by small business owners and local residents. Our strategy is to build a multicultural coalition of business owners, civic associations, cultural institutions, and houses of worship who work together to build a strong, diverse, and sustainable community. Last year, ONE FLUSHING worked with local employers to organize a job fair that connected over 350 jobseekers with economic opportunities. This year, we want to go further. We want to promote the concept of Green Jobs economic opportunities that sustain our families, our community, and our environment. Whats the point of providing jobs in industries that poison our bodies and destroy the planet? If we really care about the future of our children and the Earth, we need to support the development of careers and industries that protect ecosystems and biodiversity; reduce energy, materials, and water consumption through high efficiency strategies; de-carbonize the economy; and minimize or altogether avoid generation of all forms of waste and pollution. If you believe Green Jobs are the future, youre at the right place.
