Sugar stocks running on empty: The country's carryover sugar stocks into 2009-10 is likely to plummet to just 15 lakh tonnes by
October, coming as they are against shrinking output and acreage, leaving the government little option but raise imports for the next
two years. For 2009-10, sugar output is projected at around 160-170 lakh tonne compared to an annual consumption of 225 lakh
tonne, meaning a deficit of around 55 lakh tonne. It only recently hiked that for the 2009-10 season to Rs 107/qtl and it will take
around another month or more for that to show up in increased acreage under sugarcane," he added. Sugar prices are currently
hovering in the Rs 25-27/kg range compared to only Rs 17-18/kg the same time last year, a hike of almost 60% on the back of a
sharp domestic short supply and low sugarcane output. In the domestic wholesale market, sugar prices have jumped by over 45% to
Rs 2,475 a quintal in June 2009 from Rs 1,700 a quintal in July 2008.
Grape board to look into growers' issues: The newly-constituted 15-member Indian Grape Processing Board, set up by the central
government’s ministry of food processing industries, will undertake a sector study to address the issues facing grape growers and
processors. With the state cabinet holding its meeting in Nasik, the country’s wine district, on July 22, growers and wine makers from
the region were confident about the roll back of the 5% VAT the state has imposed on wine. This has brought the total VAT on wine
sales in the state to 25%. Since 64 of the country’s 66 or so wineries are located in Maharashtra, what happens in the state becomes
an industry issue, Ashok Sinha, secretary, ministry of food processing industries, said. However, seeking to give the industry a pan-
India presence, he said the industry has not taken the full benefit of all government assistance.
Kharif food grain output won't fall sharply: Despite the 27% deficiency across the country in June-September rains and a definite
shortfall in rice production, the country’s average annual kharif food grain output (115 million tonnes) may not see a sharp drop,
thanks to pulses and coarse cereals. Things also appear optimistic in July’s first half on soyabean in Madhya Pradesh and cotton in
Gujarat. Overall paddy acreage in key growing areas has come down compared to the same period last year but has improved
noticeably in the last fortnight following improved rains, spurring hopes that the rise in acreage will be speedy. Paddy sowing went up
by 76% in the past week. According to official data, rice was sown in 74.3 lakh hectares as on July 10 and while Friday’s fresh acreage
data could paint a clearer picture, it is only by August-end crop coverage data that there will be clarity on production estimates. The
bright side is that the country’s food grain stocks of around 50 million tonnes could insulate consumers to an extent.
