Setting Goals
-
What do we want to be by June30? How are we going to get there?
ision statements have becomejust as important as missionstatements for today’sorganization. Knowing where you wantto go and who you want to be oftenhelps everyone understand the point of all of this. In a club, this can be an easy process. Here are some things toconsider when creating a vision
Distinguished Club Plan
: Toastmasters puts this in place to give you something easy to measure yoursuccess.
Can it be achieved?
: The betterquestion is should it be achieved? I would discourage this and encourage you to focus on your members andtheir goals. DCP can help youmeasure these goals.
Set your vision
: Use the space to theright to write down some ideas for your vision for the year. You don’t have tocommit to anything, but this gives youan idea of what you can do.
V
Setting a vision, an idea of where you want to be, is a critical part of the strategicplanning process. A vision helps you identify the goals to get you there.
Goals Are SMART:
S
Specific
M
Measurable
 A
Attainable
R
Relevant
T
Time-bound
Staying Organized
How do you stay organized? Write some ideas and share with the group

What to Do When
Chances are you will have a problemwith your officers. Remember, communication is the key
DCP Problems
Some people dislike the DCP plan. Beready for this and plan on ways you canrespond. Consider giving themsomething to focus on that isn’t aboutthe DCP. Ask them for their thoughts onwhat they want to do as an officer. Finda way to bridge their ideas with yourvision.
MIA Officers
It happens with volunteer organizations, people sometimes go missing in action.Contact this person, talk to them andfind a solution together. If it requireshelp, find a way to help them. If it meansthey have to drop their position, workwith them to spread the work and find areplacement
Not Fair
Sometimes it will feel like an officer is notpulling their weight. Consider creatingan environment where all the officershold each other accountable for theirpart. Make sure you are part of thatsystem. Remind everyone that beingheld accountable is not personal, butabout reaching a goal. This gives peoplethe freedom to speak up when they feelsomeone isn’t doing their part.

Officers and Goals
Invest your Officers
Take your vision to the officers, setgoals as a group. Allow each person achance to find where they fit in thegoal. These are the people who aregoing to be working for the club. Thus,it is important that they share yourcommitment to the vision. This alsohelps them find their place in theprocess and bring their ideas to thetable.
"We held each otheraccountable to get onthe floor every timethere was a loose ball,to help in rotation when somebody wasbeat,"
Ray AllenBoston Celtics Shooting Guard
Look at Your Time Line
With Toastmasters, you have a year toreach your vision. Look at thecalendar. What important deadlinesare out there? When planningprograms, when it the best time of theyear to do so. Will weather impactyour programing? How does the newyear play into membership?
Review Strengths andWeaknesses
No club is perfect. Review the club’sstrengths and weaknesses todetermine what to focus on.Remember to be aware of youraudience. You may not want to do thiswith guests or newer members around.
Review Goals and Status
Do periodic reviews with your officersto see where you are with your goals.Do you want to continue with thisgoal? What needs to be changed toreach this goal? Remember to decideas a group.
 Accountability
There will be problems. Life will get inthe way. New leaders won’t alwaysknow what to do. People need to beheld accountable, but to know that it isnot personal. We grow when we canlearn something. The Celtics credittheir success as 2008 NBA Championsto three things. One of those thingswas accountability.By holding each other accountable onthe court, they helped each person dotheir part of the job and came togetheras a team. They knew it was OK tohave expectations and to speak upwhen those expectations weren’t beingmet. They also knew to expectfeedback when they were not doingtheir part. Treat accountability thesame way as an evaluation:supportive, but looking to help theperson grow as a leader.Make sure the environment isharassment free!
