RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Warhammer World Events. Thank you for taking the plunge and getting involved with the Warhammer 40,000 Battlefields event 2009. As you will see further in the pack, this event is completely unique to Warhammer World, and as such deserves some explanation. But before we get to that, there are some important things to make you aware of. First and foremost, the Referees are always right. They have been empowered by the Event Manager to make clear and unambiguous decisions when it comes to any issue that requires your co-operation. Even if their decision is in direct contravention of the rules, everyone at the event is obliged to accept their rulings. Secondly, we insist on the highest standards of behaviour from everyone attending the event. This applies in your dealings with the event staff, with each other and towards the general public. Your games will be taking place in a public venue and we ask that you are mindful of this at all times. Thirdly, entry into the Warhammer 40,000 Battlefields Event requires that you have an army, which has all models in the army fully painted and based in an appropriate manner. If you have any doubts about what this means, then we urge you seek further advice. Warhammer 40,000 Battlefields events are a chance for players to show off their hobby skills. Were not looking for Golden Demon standard from everyone, but we do require that the army is painted and based in an appropriate manner. If you arent prepared to accept and abide by these principles, then perhaps this event is not for you. If you are prepared to follow these principles, then good luck and read on!

HOW WARHAMMER 40,000 BATTLEFIELDS WORKS

An important aim of the Warhammer 40,000 Battlefields format is to encourage you to explore the full extent of Warhammer 40,000 and play games that you may not normally be able to in your usual gaming environment. For this years event, we will be making full use of the Cities of Death rules for some of the scenarios, so that you can truly experience what a hellish business fighting in a built up area can be. We will also be making use of some Apocalypse level scenarios as well in order to give you the opportunity to use as much of your collection as possible. For this event we are more relaxed about the schedule of the weekend. You can begin and finish your games when you are ready. However, there are some very important exceptions to this: 1. Play must start at the time specific on the schedule on each day. 2. Play must finish at the time specified on the schedule on each day. 3. You may not take any games over to the Sunday from Saturday. However, please bear in mind that all gaming must stop at 10.30pm and the venue must be clear by 11.00pm.

BATTLEFIELDS GAMING
Warhammer 40,000 Battlefields is as much a social experience as it is a hobby event, and is set up to encourage player interaction. Match ups will be determined by us at registration to ensure that wherever possible you will face suitable races to the one that you brought. We will publish these match ups after the first game, doing our best to ensure that you do not play the same person twice. As this is a much more informal event we are not too worried about who you play against. If you find you have been matched against a friend or fellow club member, then you are welcome to ask other players if theyd like to swap places. Anyone that cannot find their opponent should come to the stage and talk to a Referee, who will attempt to help find an opponent for them. If they cannot find an opponent for you, you will be assigned a spare player to play against.

2 WARHAMMER 40,000 BATTLEFIELDS

POINTS TO REMEMBER
Please try to keep the playing area clear of excess clutter. Each table will be a pre-designed battlefield with fixed scenery; if you and your opponent are unhappy with the scenery layout you are allowed to rearrange the scenery in a mutually agreeable way. If you cannot agree on this, raise your hand for a Referee who will ensure the layout is fair but please understand that the Referee may insist you use the table as is. The event organisers will provide no other games equipment and the players must provide all other materials. You must bring along a copy of the latest UK edition of the rules and expansions.

A 3,000 point Apocalypse army. You may use any of the Apocalypse Data Sheets currently available from the sources named in the Selecting an Army section for this list only. This will form your Master Army from which you will draw units to make up the other required armies. Using the 3,000 point Master Army as your pool of resources, you must be able to create legal 2,000 point , 1,500 point and 1,000 point armies using the standard Force organisation Chart. The Smaller Forces must use complete units from the Master Army. Units from Battle Formations in your Master Army may be used individually in your Smaller Forces, as long as they are complete units. A Forgeworld model or unit that appears in both an Imperial Armour Book and an Apocalypse Book will only use the Apocalypse version of the rules for the Apocalypse game. Special characters from army books may be used, subject to the restrictions detailed in their army book. Super Heavy Vehicles and Gargantuan Creatures (or indeed anything with Structure Points) may only be used in the Master Army.

ARMY CONSTRUCTION
This event requires that you have a flexible army that can be broken down into smaller components to suit the conditions of Battle you will face across the weekend. With that in mind, you must provide legal army lists for: Only the armies detailed in the Selecting an Army section or the House Rules Document may be used in this event. Anything requiring opponents consent may be considered as given for this event. You may include up to 1/3 of your army as Allied forces; they must have an HQ unit to lead them as well as one Troops choice before you can add other units. You may do this for all of your army lists for each of the scenarios. Please follow the Team Alliances table for exactly who can go with who.

TEAM ALLIANCES
Each Army may ally with only the races shown on the Alliances chart below. Simply cross-reference the races you wish to ally with. The following notations represent: B = Battle Brothers Same race, so no problems. T = Trusted Allies no special rules, alliance is permitted. D = Distrustful Allies permitted, but allied units and characters within 6 of each other suffer a -1 Leadership penalty (after other modifiers). X = Disallowed cannot ally under any circumstances.

SCENARIOS
Scenery for the battle will have been set up by the Referees and may not be moved, added to or changed without the consent of a Referee. To work out the Victory Points refer to the rules on page 300 of the Warhammer 40,000 5th Edition Rulebook. For the purpose of these scenarios follow the rules for scoring units as per page 90 of the core Rule book.

FIRESWEEP
Both sides are moving forward to occupy as much of the city as possible, conducting a room to room, building to building and street to street sweep, when they run into each other. Each force must attempt to claim as many buildings as possible, clearing the enemy from the area as they advance.

OBJECTIVE: PLANT THE FLAG

Both forces are seeking to clear the enemy from this sector. This is achieved through occupying city ruins. When a city ruin is occupied, the unit doing so plants the flag in that city ruin, and may move off to do so in more city ruins. The flag remains until an enemy Scoring Unit occupies the ruin, at which point it plants its own flag instead. At all levels of mission, the player with the most flags planted at the end of the game wins.

SET-UP

1 2 3 4

Follow the deployment rules as per page 92 of the core rule book for setting up your armies. Declare the use of stratagems, as detailed in the Cityfighting Stratagems chapter. Starting with the player that scored the lowest, the players take it in turns, deploying a unit at a time until both armies are fully deployed. Units are deployed in the following order: Troops, Heavy Support, Elites, HQ, Fast Attack. No unit can be deployed within 18" of the enemy or within 12" of the centre of the table at the start of the game. Roll a D6. The player with the highest score may choose whether to go first or second.

SCENARIO SPECIAL RULES

Alpha: Cityfighting Stratagems Gamma: Cityfighting Stratagems, Dusk & Dawn. Omega: Cityfighting Stratagems, Dusk & Dawn, Random Game Length. GAME LENGTH: The game lasts for 6 turns. An Omega game may last longer.

4 WARHAMMER 40,000 BATTLEFIELDS

DOMINATION
Both forces are attempting to dominate this sector of the city by sheer weight of numbers and raw firepower. Only when all buildings are securely held can the process of driving the enemy out, once and for all, begin.

OBJECTIVE: HOLD OUT

Each side is attempting to clear the enemy out of nearby buildings, and to hold them against possible counterattack. The player occupying the most city ruins with scoring units at the end of the game is the winner. Record your Victory points as part of your results.

SET-UP

1 2 3 4

Follow the deployment rules as per page 92 of the core rule book for setting up your armies. Roll d6 to see who will be the Attacker, and who will be the Defender. The Defender may use 1,000pts army to defend the chosen Deployment zone. Attacker may use 2,000 pts to attack the chosen Deployment zone. Roll a D6. Alpha: Cityfighting Stratagems Gamma: Cityfighting Stratagems, Dusk & Dawn. Omega: Cityfighting Stratagems, Dusk & Dawn, Random Game Length.

GAME LENGTH: The game lasts for 6 turns. An Omega game may last longer.

URBAN ASSAULT
Both forces are launching their assault upon their foes strongpoint, but must spare sufficient warriors to defend their own, lest they lose more ground than they gain!

OBJECTIVE: ENEMY POSITIONS

Both players must attempt to get units into the enemys defended building (see the Set-Up instructions). At the end of the game, the player occupying the building with scoring units the enemy choose to defend is the winner. If neither or both side can occupy the enemy building with scoring units then the game is a draw.

SET-UP

1 2 3 4 5

Follow the deployment rules as per page 92 of the core rule book for setting up your armies. Declare the use of stratagems, as detailed in the Cityfighting Stratagems chapter. The player that rolled highest in Step 1 chooses a single city ruin to defend, anywhere outside of the enemy deployment zone. Their opponent then chooses a city ruin he will defend, anywhere outside of the enemy deployment zone.

WARHAMMER 40,000 BATTLEFIELDS 5

ARMY ROSTER
When you arrive at the event you must bring two legible, preferably typed copies of your Army Roster; one is for the Referees to refer to, while the other is for you to use during the event. We will be checking the rosters to ensure that fair play is at work, so Referees may apply a Penalty for any rosters they feel are either incorrect or below the required standard for each of the games it was used in. Please help us to help you by making them legible! It must be presented in English, and contain the following information: Player Name, Ticket Number and Team name (where appropriate). The name of the models used in your army, as well as their points value. Any extra equipment or special items must be clearly marked along with their points cost. The rosters must include all of the models in your armies, their points values, the points values of any equipment, and must specify which models are carrying any extra equipment or special items. Please put your name and entry number on all copies of the roster.

WYSIWYG
An important principle in our events is what you see is what you get or WYSIWYG (pronounced wizzy-wig for short). All this means is that unless you are using the Counts As rule (see below), then the miniatures used are assumed to have their equipment actually shown on the model.

COUNTS AS
The Counts As rule allows you to apply the rules for existing units to older or scratch built models that do not have rules of their own. If you decide to use the Counts As rule, then you must: 1. Prior to the event, contact the Event Manager and discuss which models you intend to use under the Counts As rule. The Event Manager may, at their discretion, disallow any Counts As choice if they feel it is inappropriate or confusing. 2. Before the tournament begins you must approach a referee and notify them of your decision to use the Counts As rule. You must let them know what counts as what. 3. The Referee may, at their discretion, disallow any Counts As choice if they feel it is inappropriate or confusing.

SELECTING AN ARMY Warhammer 40,000 Battlefields allows you to make

use of a wider range of source material for the games you will play. Only the material mentioned on the list below will be used for this event. However, as the purpose of the event is to have fun with Warhammer 40,000; if you feel that theres something we should allow in, then you must contact us first in order to discuss it. Cities of Death Codex: Black Templars Codex: Blood Angels* Codex: Chaos Daemons Codex: Chaos Space Marines Codex: Daemonhunters Codex: Dark Angels Codex: Dark Eldar Codex: Eldar Codex: Imperial Guard Codex: Necrons Codex: Orks Codex: Space Marines Codex: Space Wolves Codex: Tau Empire Codex: Tyranids Codex: Witch Hunters Imperial Armour Vol: 1-5 Imperial Armour Update 06 (for additional Codexs units for the above and army lists). Imperial Armour Apocalypse** GW Online: Errata for Codexs Warhammer 40,000 Apocalypse** GW Online: Apocalypse datasheets**

4. Before each game starts you must tell your opponent that you have decided to use the Counts As rule and you must let them know what counts as what.

PAINTED ARMIES
Warhammer 40,000 Battlefields is a fantastic opportunity to show off your hobby skills; while we arent looking for Golden Demon standard, we do have some prerequisites, as stated in the Rules of Engagement. If Referees see anything they consider to be inappropriate to the event, you will be required to follow their instructions in full. They may apply penalties where they see fit. Examples of this include, but are not exclusive to: Unpainted miniatures will be removed from play by Referees. We dont allow the use of non-Citadel or nonForgeworld miniatures for this event and any found will be removed from play by Referees. Conversions or Scratch-built models that are considered to be unsuitable by the Referees will be removed from play.

* PDF available as a download from: http://warhammerworld.org **Are used in the Master Army of 3000 points only. Any official rules published at least one calendar month before the event is held may be used and these will supersede any related lists printed prior to them.

BEST ARMY AND USING BOUGHT ARMIES

At every Tournament we give an award for the Best Army. This is awarded to the force that, in the opinion of both a panel of judges and the players, is the best in terms of painting and character. We do want to make sure that the Best Army award goes to the player who painted their entire army themselves. For this reason youll be asked to indicate on the form that comes with this pack whether you painted your forces yourself, or if you got someone else to do it for you. Judges may not select the players army for Best Army voting if a player has declared that they did not personally paint their entire army. We ask all of the contestants to remain honest in their declaration. The way the Best Army award will be given works in two steps: The Judges pick a few forces for the Best Army vote on the first day. You will all be invited to vote for the Best Army on the second day of the Tournament. The most votes will win the player the trophy. Entries will be judged in four areas: 1. PREPARATION AND WORKMANSHIP - The entry must not have obvious flaws such as flash, scratches, cracks, visible joints. Preparation is an area frequently overlooked by many painters and is often the tie breaking factor in a competition. It includes all prepaint work that could be visible in or on the finished product such as flashing lines and conversion/joint work. 2. BACKGROUND, ACCURACY AND CREATIVITY Entries will be judged based on the level of thematic elements the modeler has incorporated to enhance the entry. 3. PRESENTATION - Presentation includes all of the extra work done to the base(s) and figures. It will include basing detail and those added extra touches the entrant included that really set it apart from the other entries. Please note that display boards will not be taken into account when judging this part of the competition. 4. PAINTING SKILL - At a minimum, the entry should show the modelers ability to paint neatly and "stay inside the lines." Entries that display the modelers ability to paint and shade a variety of surfaces (flesh, metals, cloth, leather, fur) in a realistic manner will be rewarded here. Painting covers all styles, from inking to washes and dip, to highlighting and shading. Since there are so many techniques available for the painter, the judges will do their best to be open minded about the techniques used, but in the end, it is all about aesthetics and the judges' call.

USING MODELS FROM OUR THE LORD OF THE RINGS RANGE

Please note that at this time, due to the nature of our licenses, Warhammer 40,000 Armies that feature models or model components from our Lord of the Rings ranges cannot be nominated for the Best Army Award. If any of the other awards are won using an army containing models from the Lord of the Rings ranges, the army unfortunately cannot be photographed or featured on the Web or in any Games Workshop publication.

WHO WINS THE EVENT?

Did you enjoy yourself? Did your opponents enjoy themselves? If the answer to both of those questions is a loud YES then you have indeed won the event. Congratulations! This event is not about finding a grand champion who achieves victory by any means; its about exploring the wider possibilities of Warhammer 40,000. We do appreciate that your victories and your defeats provide numerous memories and talking points for weeks, months or even years to come. With that in mind it is our intention to produce a record of your gaming success for you to keep as a reminder of your weekend. After each game you must record the result of the game (Win, Lose or Draw), and the number of Victory Points (where appropriate - the only exception to this is the Apocalypse games you will be playing in) that both you and your opponent scored. Please record victory points earned even in games where this is not required by the scenario in order to determine who wins some of the awards we will be giving out. At the end of the weekend this information will also be entered onto your personalised Battle Report

THE WARM-UP PERIOD

This is a five minute warm-up period at the start of each round where Players should ask their opponent questions about their army, the rules that apply to it, as well as to discuss the terrains effect upon the game.

RECORDING RESULTS
Some of the games you will be playing will have a set scenario, after which you will need to record the outcome of on your Results Card. Please hand them in as soon as possible after finishing your event. Please note that if you are wishing to play additional games across the weekend, then these will not count towards your Battle Report.

. The award ceremony will take place as soon as possible after the conclusion of the final game. We urge all players to stay for the awards ceremony if they possibly can, so that they can cheer the winners and commiserate with the losers! As well as the record of gaming we will be handing out a few awards at this event, including: Bloodiest Game most Victory Points scored by both players in one game. The Kharn the Betrayer Award most Victory Points scored, or the player with the greatest margin of victory over the weekend. Closest Run Thing the smallest victory points difference between both players in one game. Biggest Victory the player with the largest points margin over their opponent in a single game. The Colonel Schaeffer Award the player who gave away the most cumulative victory points over the course of the weekend Best Army Award for the winner of the Painting Competition Most Sporting Opponent Award This is a discretionary title bestowed by the Referees on the player they consider to have demonstrated sportsmanship above and beyond the generally high expectations of all gamers. Please be aware, however, that not every event will reveal someone worthy of this high accolade and it will not be awarded lightly!

REFEREES & RULES QUERIES

THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE
If you encounter a rules problem during one of your games and cannot find the answer in the rulebook or any other Games Workshop resource, for a quick resolution, and in order to avoid arguments, we recommend that you dice off to decide on a temporary answer and get on with your game.

PENALTIES
As the purpose of this event is to have fun, acting in an unsporting or unfriendly way is unacceptable. If the Referees become aware of anyone acting in this way then they will be asked to play in an appropriate manner, or face the consequences Players that have been asked to play in a sporting manner and who fail to do so will be penalised through a simple Yellow and Red Card system issued at the Event Teams discretion.

REFEREES
Sometimes at the event you will seek to resolve a rules question. Please note that there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking an opponent if they can show you the appropriate rule or set of characteristics so that you can clarify that everything is being done correctly. All we require is that you ask nicely and politely, and that you do your best to sort out any problems yourselves! If you want a Referee to resolve a rules question, then you are free to call one over, and our Referees may intervene if they see an argument. You should also note that the prime duty of our Referees is to make sure that the majority of players in the tournament get a nice friendly game where winning is secondary to having a good time. If you want a Referee to resolve a rules question, then you are free to call one over, and our Referees may intervene if they see an argument. You should also note that the prime duty of our Referees is to make sure that the majority of players in the event get a nice friendly game where winning is secondary to having a good time. If you ask for a rules clarification the Referees will follow the process as laid down in the Chief Referees decision Book. The decision of the Referee is final, and no discussion will be entered into.

YELLOW CARD
Initially, for the most common offences, the Referee will show the offending player(s) a Yellow Card and make a deduction from their points score. A second Yellow Card will result in the Referees showing a Red Card.

RED CARD
Players who continue to offend or who commit the most serious offences will be shown a Red Card by a Referee. A Red Card will cause the loss of the game being played. A further Red Card offence will lead to a player being excluded.

EXCLUSION
Players that argue with a Referee, continue to offend after being shown a Red Card, or who act in an especially unpleasant or violent manner will be asked to leave the tournament. The decision of the Referee is final, and no discussion will be entered into. No refunds will be issued to players who are excluded.

SPORTSMANSHIP & PLAYER CONDUCT

Our events are not meant to be cut-throat, win-at-all costs competitions, and because of this we expect and require participants to compete in a friendly manner. Please try to go out of your way to make the game as enjoyable an experience as possible for your opponent. Every person attending this event is entitled to enjoy their games throughout the course of the event. If you are not enjoying your game for whatever reason, then you should call over a referee to discuss the situation with them.

MARKING THE DIFFICULT OPPONENT BOX

If you felt that your opponent acted in an unsporting manner, let a Referee know about it! By ticking the Difficult Opponent box on your score card; Referees will be assigned to keep an eye on any participants with marked cards.
