Well.....I can think of a few reasons the Baha'i Faith is threatening to the Iranian Clergy/government. 1. There are no clergy in the Baha'is Faith. If people become Baha'is...the clergy will be out of a job. 2. Like previous religions, the Islamic clergy believe that their Prophet, Muhammed, was the final Prophet. Baha'is believe He was not. This is VERY threatening as it would mean the end of their religion and power if too many became Baha'is 3. Baha'is believe in the equality of women and men. The Islamic Clergy generally believe in the inferiority of women and keep them from attaining positions of prominence or importance or from having equal rights and status. 4. Baha'is believe in 'independant investigation of the truth' .... this is a threat as the clergy do NOT want their followers to think....only obey. 5. The World Centre of the Baha'i Faith is in Haifa Israel. (This is not really a good reason as the Al Aqsa Mosque is also in Israel.....and there is no connection between the World Centre and the Israeli Government - the World Centre began their in 1868, when Baha'u'llah was exiled to the prison city of Akka by the Ottoman/Persian governments. Baha'is do not engage in political movements - although they do carry out their civic duties such as voting.) And, I'm sure there are many more reasons......but that's a good start. What is interesting is that Baha'is revere Muhammad (and Christ, Moses, etc) as a Messenger from God and the Quran as a Holy Book. AND Baha'is do NOT believe that Baha'u'llah is the last Messenger. God will always send His Divine Teachers to us from time to time.....to help us evolve, individually and as a society. Good question!
As a Baha'i that resides in a country that has and practices religious freedom, I am highly interested in what goes on in Iran, which is the birthplace of our Faith. What is it, that a religious minority of merely 300,000 Baha'is have that so threatens the Iranian Revolutionary Government? Here is a Faith that stems from the very same Shi'ah historical roots, but that took a path towards equality and toleration. What a "shameful" thing to do. All this government's actions continue to do is create martyrs and pique world-wide interest. On behalf of an All-loving God, Thank you.
