100. Teenager Jailed for Making
Grandmother Do Gangster Rap Video
Eighteen-year-old Florida man Michael Alfinez
was jailed for shooting a homemade rap video
in which he coaxed his senile grandmother into
holding a gun and threatening to "shoot all
pigs." According to detectives, 85-year-old
Marie Huertes said she felt "ashamed" while
viewing the video and that "they are making a
criminal out of me." The rest of the Alfinez
family chalked it up to the proverbial
"misunderstanding."
99. Man Banned by Court from
Girlfriend's Home After Noisy Sex
A British court banned 32-year-old Adam
Hinton from visiting the apartment of a 28-year-
old girlfriend after neighbors complained about
their noisy lovemaking sessions. One woman
told the court her young daughter was so
traumatized by the sounds of intense pleasure
that the toddler began suffering nightmares and
wetting the bed.
98. German Playboy Files Charges
Against Girl for Refusal of Sex
Despite a night on the town that ended back at
his place, a 19-year-old Berlin woman refused
to have sex with 77-year-old German playboy
Rolf Eden, saying he was too old for her. So
what did Eden do? He sued her for ageism.
"After all, there are laws against
discrimination," the septuagenarian argued.
Legal experts predict the old man will also
strike out in court.
97. WTF! Woman in Cow Suit
Arrested for Creating Chaos
Thirty-two-year-old Michelle Allen was
arrested for an all-day rampage that included
terrorizing small children, blocking traffic and
urinating on porches (none her own). Oh, and
she did it all dressed as a cow
96. Woman Puts Seatbelt on Beer, Forgets
About Baby
A Florida woman arrested for drunk driving had
a case of beer buckled up safely while her one-
year-old daughter sat in the back seat secured
by neither car seat nor seat belt. When the
arresting officer asked why the girl wasn't
restrained Tina Williams replied, "I don't
know."
95. Greatest Police Car Escape Ever Made
by a Gay Porn Star
After being arrested for possessing a half-ounce
of crack and a handgun, gay porn star Taleon
head-butted his way out the back window of a
moving police car. Even though the adult

performer landed on his face, he was able to
jump right up and elude officers -- first on foot,
and then by swimming across a pond. All the
while, his hands were cuffed behind his back.
According to an onlooker, "He swam across
like Flipper." It wasn't until a week later that
police were able to catch up with him -- and
only because he turned himself in.
94. Woman Tricked into Sex by Penis
Cream Treatment
An English schoolteacher alleged in court that a
Syrian airline pilot tricked her into having sex
with him by claiming the best way to apply a
certain gynecological ointment into her vagina
was via the tip of his penis. According to her
lawyer, this happened more then once, and the
man "thrust slowly or quickly" during specific
sessions depending on "doctor's advice."
93. Nude Maid Takes off with 40K in
Jewels
A "nude maid," who advertised her services on
Craigslist for $100 an hour, allegedly stole
$40,000 worth of jewels from the home of a
Tampa man who solicited her. What doesn't gel
about this story is that there are only a couple of
places a nude woman can hide jewelry, and they
would be the places somebody who just paid
$100 to see her naked would have his eyes on.
92. Woman Brands Thoughtless Date
with Hot Iron
Kristina Caban was sentenced to five years in
prison after being found guilty of branding the
body of a date who never called her back after
they had sex. Caban and Samir Sarah went out
in 2004, but it wasn't until December of 2006
that Caban lured Samir to a hotel and, with the
help of her new boyfriend, used a hot iron to
burn an "R" on Samir's torso.
91. Guy Had Sex with 1,000 Cars
Edward Smith, a self-confessed Machaphiliac,
has confessed to making love to 1,000 cars. One
can't help but be suspicious of a claim of sexual
conquest -- whether it be of flesh and blood or
machine -- that contains such a nice, round
number. Nevertheless, most folks would still be
comfortable granting that Smith has porked
more cars than the typically lonely guy. Oddly,
Smith lists "his most intense sexual experience"
as the time he was able to make love to the
helicopter from the 1980 TV hit "Airwolf." A
bi-machaphiliac?
90. Lost Parrot Tells Veterinarian His
Address
A lost parrot that refused to speak to the police
who rescued him opened right up when the cops
turned him over to a vet, reciting his name and
address as his owner had trained him to. "I tried
to be friendly and talk to him," said police
officer Shinjiro Uemura, "but he completely
ignored me." One thing is for certain -- that

89. Man Sues Doctors for Amputating
Penis
A Kentucky man went in for a routine
circumcision (if there is such a thing) and woke
up to find his entire penis amputated. Not
surprisingly, Kevin George is suing his doctors,
who claim they spotted cancer and made an
emergency decision that couldn't wait until he
woke up a few hours later.
88. Nine-year-old-boy Told He's Too
Good to Pitch
A nine-year-old Little Leaguer was told that his
40 mph fastball was just too speedy, and he was
banned from pitching in the Youth Baseball
League of New Haven, Conn. When his coach
defied the league edict and put Jericho Scott
back on the mound, the league disbanded his
team. "I feel sad," Scott said. "I feel like it's all
my fault nobody could play."
87. Man Calls 911 Over Incorrect
Sandwich
Reginald Peterson dialed 911 not once, but
twice, after the sandwiches he ordered from
Subway did not have all the fixings he had
requested. When the cops arrived and tried to
explain to Peterson the proper way to use the
emergency response service, he was
uncooperative and they arrested him. It should
surprise no one that this went down in Florida.
86. Graffiti Snails Attack London
A British graffiti artist known only as Slinkachu
decided to unleash on the world a slow-moving
art project -- snails with graffiti painted on their
backs. The 28-year-old reassured Metro UK
readers, "No snails were harmed -- they just had
their homes vandalized."
85. Sarah Palin Sex Doll
The litigiously savvy adult product
manufacturers who created a blow-up sex doll
in the image of Alaska's sexiest governor ever
(sorry Frank Murkowski), labeled it the "This Is
NOT Sarah Palin Inflatable Love Doll." But
they were willing to concede the sex toy could
help you "cross party lines with your own
inflatable running mate."
84. Man Sues Doctor for Stapling His
Butt Shut
A West Virginia man is suing his doctor in
federal court after a botched surgery that left his
rectum stapled shut. As a result of this tragedy,
Ronald Watkins had to go 17 days without
defecating. Watkins's lawsuit doesn't seek a
specific amount of damages.

83. Did Adolf Hitler Draw Disney
Characters?
A Norwegian museum director claims to have
discovered pictures of Disney cartoons drawn
by Adolf Hitler during World War II. Hitler was
a trained artist and a known fan of Disney films.
This dichotomy between childhood innocence
and perhaps the worst person who ever lived is
sure to fetch a small fortune when the prints go
to auction.
82. Court Finds Model Innocent Based
on Breast Size
Serena Kozakura, a buxom Japanese bikini
model, was charged and initially found guilty of
breaking into a man's apartment by kicking a
hole in the door and crawling through. But, on
appeal, her lawyer had a Johnny
Cochrane/Jackie Childs-like revelation and was
able to convince a judge that the hole in the door
wasn't big enough for Kozakura's 44-inch bust
to fit through. If the t*ts don't fit, you must
acquit.
81. "What Are You Doing Here?" Man 74. Man Robs Little Girl's Lemonade
Asks Wife at Brothel Stand
A Polish man got the shock of his life when he
visited a brothel and spotted his wife of 14 years
among the working girls. The couple decided to
divorce.
80. Topless Woman Lured Perverts in
Sting Operation
Forty-two-year-old Robin Garrison probably
thought it was his lucky day when he
encountered a flirtatious topless woman in a
Cleveland park. Eventually she asked to see his
penis, as flirtatious topless women sometimes
do. Seconds after unzipping, a van filled with
undercover police officers pulled up, and
Garrison was arrested for public indecency.
Needless to say, Garrison is claiming
entrapment.
79. Woman Sues American Airlines
over Masturbating Passenger
A woman has filed a $200,000 lawsuit alleging
an American Airlines crew allowed another
passenger to go all "There's Something About
Mary" up in her hair. She had fallen asleep and
awoke to find the stranger finishing off on her
tempting tresses. While this is clearly a horrible
thing to have happen, many question why she is
suing the airline, and not the pervert.
78. Woman Wakes Up with New In an attempt to test airport security, customs
Exotic Accent officers at Tokyo's Narita airport stuck 142
Cindy Lou Romberg woke up one morning with
brand new exotic accent, which sounds like a
mix of Russian, German and Swedish. What
made this particularly odd is that Romberg had
never once left her hometown of Port Angeles,
Wash. Doctors attribute the vocal change to a
delayed reaction from a severe brain injury
Romberg had suffered years earlier. It's called
Foreign Accent Syndrome, and, while it's rare
and baffling, neuroscientists believe it's legit.

A British newspaper reported that an end-of-
the-school-term party in the town of Cumbria
literally turned into an orgy, with almost 200
students "having unprotected sex in a village
square." We tend to be a bit skeptical of these
stories -- especially when they come from the

75. Size-16 Beauty Queen
Striking a bloated blow for "real women"
everywhere, Chloe Marshall -- both 16 and a
size 16 -- won the Miss Surrey beauty pageant,
qualifying her to compete for Miss England.
One of the few things more embarrassing than “Hey! Don’t worry! It’s only an ice
being caught robbing a lemonade stand is being particle!”

Fire breaks out in home. Dog stays inside the
burning building guarding a cardboard box full
of kittens. Kittens, rescued. Dog succumbs to
smoke inhalation but is revived. Inter-species
chivalry makes everyone say "AWWWW".
72. 19-Year-Old Gets World's Longest
Super Name
A 19-year-old British man has officially
changed his name to "Captain Fantastic Faster
than Superman Spiderman Batman Wolverine
Hulk and the Flash Combined." For accuracy's
sake, we insist he tack an "Able to Repel Real
Woman With a Single Ridiculous Name" onto
the back of that monstrosity.
71. Cannabis Blunder at Tokyo
Airport
grams (1/3 of a pound) of marijuana in the
luggage of a random passenger. The test failed
miserably when drug-sniffing dogs were unable
to detect the large cache. The marijuana has yet
to be returned. "

Instead of just getting one of those generic
bride-and-groom cake toppers, Chidi Ogbuta
went all out and had her entire wedding cake
molded into her image -- and her image alone.
Our advice to the groom-to-be? Run. Run hard,
and run fast. And when your muscles ache, and
the burn of your lungs becomes unbearable ...
run some more.
69. Boy Fed Zoo Reptiles to Crocodile
A seven-year-old boy scaled a fence at the Alice
Springs Reptile Centre in Australia and then
proceeded to kill thirteen exotic animals --
mostly by throwing them into an enclosure
housing a hungry crocodile. The smirking boy's
30-minute reptile massacre was captured on
security cameras, prompting outrage in
Australia.
68. Teen Delivers LSD Cookies to
Police Departments
It's usually just the stuff of urban legends, but,
according to authorities, 18-year-old Christian
Phillips dosed a basket of cookies with LSD for
real, and then delivered it to his local police
department! Phillips may have even gotten
away with playing Timothy Leary to the
unknowing law enforcement set if he hadn't
returned with another tripped out basket a few
days later. Phillips denies there was any LSD in
the cookies, but admits his friends may have
baked some pot in as "a joke."
67. Woman to Harvest Virginity of Pro
Net Neutrality Nerds
Tanya Devereaux, who gained notoriety last
year by running for the Belgian senate on a
platform of giving voters oral sex, is now
offering to deflower any virgin who supports
net neutrality. Devereaux insists condoms must
be worn, and the act can't last more than 30
minutes (like that's likely.)
66. Man Steals from Billboard
Operator, Bad Idea
A New Zealander stealing lighting from a
billboard managed to get photographed in the
act by a friend of the man to whom the
equipment belonged. Billboard company
proprietor Mark Venter then printed the image
of the thief on four of his other billboards with
the inscription: Who Is This Thief? Reward
$500
65. Chuck Norris Sues, Says His Tears
to snort a brain chemical that not only keeps us
No Cancer Cure awake, but doesn't cause the edginess of other
Chuck Norris sued publisher Penguin over a
book based on a satirical Internet list of
"mythical facts" about him that the actor
claimed unfairly exploits his name. The lawsuit
alleges "some of the 'facts' in the book are racist,
lewd or portray Mr. Norris as engaged in illegal
activities." Meaning if the suit goes to trial, we
will finally find out if devirginizing the Virgin
Islands is considered an illegal activity.
64. Teen Hacker May Get 38 Years in
Jail for Changing His Grades
An 18-year-old from Orange County, Calif., is
facing 38 years in prison after being arrested for
hacking into his school's computer system and

Takes Own Life
In April, a man who 12 years earlier received a
heart transplant from a suicide victim -- and
then married the dead man's wife -- also died of
a self-inflected gunshot wound. According to
Zlorp, "Anyone thinking the heart has anything
to do with it is clearly overlooking the fact that
the wife is the likely culprit here."
62. Dozens of High School Girls Make
Pact to get Pregnant
Last summer it was discovered that 17 girls at
Gloucester High School were expecting babies -
- more than four times the number of
pregnancies the school of 1,200 students had the
year before. What sprung this story into national
prominence was a rumor that many of the girls
had entered into some sort of pregnancy pact.
61. Portland High School Students Try
to Fool Parents
High school students in Portland, Ore., used
official school letterhead and stationery to mail
a note to parents asking them to consider
opening up their homes for post-prom parties as
"a safe, secure place for students to have fun,"
adding if adults "provide the alcohol, you can
have peace of mind knowing that (teenagers)
did not acquire it illegally." No word if any
parents fell for it, but this is one of the better
senior pranks we've come across that didn't
involve cows.
60. Smart Kids Are More Likely to
Become Drunks
Public health experts from the University of
Glasgow were able to obtain the childhood
mental ability scores of over 8,000 men and
women in their 30s, and found -- much to their
surprise --the higher the IQ, the higher the
likelihood of developing a drinking problem.
We suspect a lot of boozers are hoping these
findings hold up, as their perceived intellects
would be a great reason to party.
59. Snorting a Brain Chemical Could
Replace Sleep
Move over, coffee. In the future we may be able
stimulants. In fact, it could replace sleep
altogether.

Toys 'R Us is now selling a removable lower-
back tattoo for the littlest wannabe Britney.
57. Nine Women Arrested After Oral
Sex Competition
In July, nine British women were arrested for
participating in an oral sex contest on the Greek
island of Zakynthos. Each was charged with
prostitution, and the male parts of the equation
were hit with encouraging obscene behavior. "

Waitress $50K and a Buick
Waitress Melina Salazar served Walter "Buck"
Swords, despite his curses and unreasonable
demands, over the course of seven years. When
the cantankerous old man died at 89, he
surprised everybody by leaving Salazer
$50,000 and his Buick. It's like the sappy,
made-for-TV version of "As Good as It Gets."
55. Fake Seat Belt Fools Police, Fails
to Cheat Death
A New Zealand man who had been ticketed 32
times for not wearing his seat belt finally had
enough and designed a homemade fake seat belt
to throw off the fuzz. Then he died when he was
thrown into his steering wheel during a low-
impact collision.
54. Fake Cop Arrested After Pulling
Over Real Cop
A Connecticut man impersonating a police
officer got the shock of his life when he
attempted to pull over a real police officer.
Israel Gomez went all out in his deception,
using a siren and loudspeaker to coax Lt.
Ronald Bair off the road. Gomez was charged
with impersonating a police officer, reckless
driving and improper use of a red flashing light.
It is further proof that we can all make our own
bad luck.
53. Man Stole Buses, Drove Routes,
Returned Them at Night
An 18-year-old allegedly stole Miami-Dade
Transit buses on three occasions, and then
drove their routes. James Harris wore a proper
bus driver uniform during his crime, and
returned the buses and the fares to the depot
each night. The Grantman knows how the
authorities finally put the kibosh on Harris's
bizarre idea of a good time: "They caught him
because he stood out like a sore thumb. He was
polite, friendly and on time."
52. Identical Twins Marry, Give Birth
to Identical Twins
Identical twins Diane and Darlene Nettemeier
met identical twins Craig and Mark Sanders ten
years ago, and soon they were a pair of married
couples, with matching houses built next to
each other. Now, despite the million-to-one
odds, Diane and Craig have had identical twins
of their own.
51. Teen Plots to Kill Jesus
In April, police arrested an 18-year-old South
Carolina high school senior for threatening to
blow up his school. Ryan Schallenberger told

has a bear carcass and 60 stitches on his skull
that says it is true.

Police in the Congo arrested 13 suspected
sorcerers accused of using black magic to steal
or shrink men's penises. After making their
victim's manhood disappear, the magical thief
will then extort him with the promise of its
return. "I'm tempted to say it's one huge joke,"
said police chief Jean-Dieudonne Oleko. "But
when you try to tell the victims that their
penises are still there, they tell you that it's
become tiny or that they've become impotent."

Almost Loses Penis
A man in Hong Kong attempting to have sex
with a small hole in a metallic park bench
managed to get his swollen member so stuck
that the paramedics had to load the entire bench
into the ambulance with him. It took surgeons
four hours to pry the man from the seating, and
doctors stated that if it had taken much longer
he would have lost his penis.

Few Pennies at a Time
It happened in "Office Space," it happened in
"Superman II," and now it has happened in real
life. A California man was arrested for
siphoning off pennies from various dummy
online trading accounts to the tune of $50,000.

$46 Bill, Pot in Purse
Adding to the ever-expanding list of disgraced
beauty queens, Miss Teen Louisiana, Lindsay
Evans, was arrested for walking out on a $46
restaurant tab. Unfortunately for the criminal
mastermind, she left her purse in the restaurant
and got nabbed by the cops when she came back
to retrieve it. To make matters worse, the police
had found marijuana in her abandoned property.
Evans was stripped of her crown, but, as you
can see from her mug shot, was able maintain
her pageant-girl grin despite the embarrassing
ordeal.
43. Anti-Emo Riots Break Out Across
Mexico
While one doesn't necessarily associate Mexico
with the emo lifestyle, sensitive teenagers
wearing skinny jeans, tear-blurred guyliner and
Morrissey T-shirts are apparently becoming a
real problem for our neighbor to the south. So
much so that large, angry mobs have taken to
going on emo-beating rampages.

An Israeli researcher has claimed Moses was

and that Moses was also high when he saw the
burning bush.

taunted the police with a "That's all you got?"
Myers was eventually arrested for resisting
arrest and first-degree criminal contempt. We

Archeologists excavating a 2,700-year-old tomb
in northern China came across an herbal
surprise when they dug up a 789-gram stash of

psychoactive purposes." But we mustn't be too
quick to think of the tomb's long-dead occupant
as a pothead who couldn't bear the thought of a
marijuana-free afterlife.
36. Guy Catches Co-Workers Having
Sex, Gets Fired for It
When an employee at a New York ad agency
peeked over his cubicle wall and saw two of his
co-workers all-out getting it on, he couldn't help
but hit the record button on his cell. Not only a
morally dubious choice, it also became a career-
ending one when he e-mailed the clip to a
"couple of friends." Needless to say, the video
went viral.

YouTube video. Of course, it quickly became
the talk of the schoolyard. Sarah Green, who is
young and attractive, shot the racy clothing ad
before taking her teaching post, but she was still
suspended pending an investigation. Kids today
have it way too easy. Back in our school days,
we only had our imaginations to conjure up
images of our favorite teacher simulating sex.

recalled the issue, but not before some got into
circulation. We wish we had gotten our hands
on a copy: Not only would it be worth more
than we paid for it, but reading Batman using
the C-word never fails to make our inner-12-

A woman in England created a Facebook group
called "I need sex," and then proceeded to sleep
with 50 of the men who joined. The horny social

Ramazan Calcoban, a Turkish man, sent a text
message to his ex-wife, accusing her of

arguments." But because his phone didn't have a
character for the Turkish "closed i," what she
read was, "You change the topic every time they
are (screwing) you." The woman showed the
message to her father, who then stabbed
Calcoban to death for calling his daughter a
whore. The father, realizing what had happened,
hung himself in prison. The woman and her two
sisters, who aided in the attack, remain in jail.
27. Man Cuts Off Own Head with
Chainsaw After Losing Eviction
In an elaborate scheme that involved a
chainsaw, the leg of a snooker table, some tape
and a timer, an Englishman was able to almost
completely cut off his own head. The self-
decapitation was in protest of being evicted
from his apartment.
26. Indiana Inmates Sneak Through
the Ceiling to Have Sex
Three male and three female inmates face
felony charges after they devised a way to sneak
between cell blocks and have sex. The after-
midnight encounters also included homemade
liquor and card playing. Extra prison time and

Fifteen-year-old Amanda Rouse was feeling
sick, so instead of getting off the bus and going

depot. Along the way, the bus driver fell out of
her seat during a sharp turn and was rendered
immobile. Rouse sprung into action, applied the
breaks and saved the 40 elementary school
students in the bus. School officials thanked
Rouse with a Saturday detention for her
unauthorized trip back home.
24. Student Auctioning Virginity at
Brothel
A Sacramento State University grad looking to
pay off her student loans turned to the world's
oldest profession. But there is a catch. Natalie
Dylan claims she is a virgin and decided to sell
her maidenhood to the highest bidder. It's all
legal, because the auction is being held by a
Nevada brothel.
A London man was stopped from boarding a
flight at Heathrow Airport because he was
wearing a shirt that depicted a "Transformers"
cartoon character holding a gun. Security
reckoned the image could upset other travelers,
and allowed the man to enter the plane only
after he changed his shirt
An armored truck robber dressed as a
construction worker used Craigslist to hire a
dozen unsuspecting decoys to help him make
his getaway. The crook's ad offered a high-
paying construction job to anybody who
showed up in front of a Bank of America at
11:00 a.m. dressed for work. With a diversion
created, the brazen thief shed his outerwear and
escaped by hopping in an inner tube and
floating down a nearby river.
21. Driver Who Killed Teen Sues for
Damaged Vehicle
Spanish businessman Tomas Delgado was
driving nearly 50 mph over the speed limit
when he crashed into cyclist Enaitz Iriondo,
killing the 17-year-old. A regional court found
both parties at fault -- Iriondo wasn't wearing a
helmet or reflective clothing -- and closed the
case without issuing criminal charges. But
instead of expressing remorse for playing a
hand in ending another's life, Delgado twisted
the knife further by suing Iriondo's parents for
the car's damages.
20. Guy Calls in Sick, Gets Busted by
Facebook
Kyle Doyle, a 21-year-old office worker in
England, phoned in sick one morning after a
long night of drinking. Doyle then bragged of
his drunken exploits in his Facebook status bar,
and his company's HR department caught wind
of it. Unfortunately -- or fortunately,
considering Doyle worked in a call center -- he
was fired.

having a vote on whether Alex Barton could
remain in the class. The five-year-old -- who is
in the process of being diagnosed with autism -
- got the ax by a cruel 14-2 margin.
17. Lehman Brothers CEO Gets
Knocked Out
Sick of CEOs who took large bonuses right
before their house-of-card companies collapsed
and then went on to testify in front of Congress
about how it was everybody's fault but their
own? If so, you will be happy to know that
somebody straight knocked out Lehman
Brothers CEO Dick Fuld. The karmic sucker
punch took place while Fuld was riding the
treadmill in the gym of his now-bankrupt
investment bank.
16. Redheads Have More Sex than
Blondes or Brunettes
With South Park sparking a worldwide
proliferation in "Kick a Ginger Day," 2008
wasn't the greatest for redheads. But carrot tops
can take solace in the fact that -- kicked or not -
- they end up having more sex on average than
those of us with normal hair. Yet another way to
look at it is that redheaded randiness benefits all
of humanity.
15. Lose a Finger, Put Some Powder
On It
Last spring, the Internet was enthralled with a
video showing a man who had lost the tip of his
finger regenerating it using powder made from
a pig bladder. Skeptics have pointed out that the
man's injury was likely just a particularly nasty-
looking flesh wound, and it would have healed
that way regardless of the magic powder. But,
with coverage from the BBC and Associated
Press, this story seemed legit and probably
encouraged an increase in reckless knife play.
14. Mr. T Brought a Boy Out of a
Coma
Years ago, during the height of the A-Team's
popularity, there was a comatose boy in a
Detroit hospital who would only respond when
he heard Mr. T's name. Doctors contacted the
TV star, and he agreed to visit the boy. Right
after he did, the child awoke from his coma.
(This is all according to Mr. T, but B.A. Baracus
would never fib.) So did Mr. T perform this
miracle? "
13. Victory for the Topless Front
After a year of intense campaigning by a
feminist group called the Topless Front, the
women of Copenhagen will now have the same
right to bare their chests as men have always
enjoyed. "We women would like to decide by
ourselves when our breasts should be sexual and
when not," said campaign leader Astrid Vang.

An elementary school student was arrested and
charged with possession of a weapon on school
property after being caught using a knife she
had brought from home to cut her food at lunch.
Although the ten-year-old Florida girl was
never accused of threatening anyone with her
personal cutlery, school officials saw fit to teach
her a lesson in obeying the letter of the law, and
had her carted off to juvie. "
10. Oregon Woman Loses $400,000 to
Nigerian E-mail Scam
This is webscam classic, and enjoyed the
popularity due to the kind of nostalgia normally
reserved for Mario Kart. Janella Spears, a
nursing administrator and CPR teacher sent
$400,000 dollars over the course of two years to
con artists in a "Nigerian Scam" involving
"official-looking documents and certificates
from the Bank of Nigeria and the United
Nations. President Bush and FBI Director
Robert Mueller."
9. Prostitutes on Google Street View
Easily one of the best Internet memes of the
year was finding wild, outlandish sh*t captured
by the cartographers of Google Street View.
Besides helping us out with directions, Google
Street View provided us with passed-out drunks,
thieves caught in the act, and, of course, girls
tanning in bikinis. In this map of Oakland,
California, Google managed to catch some
ladies of the night peddling their wares in broad
daylight.
8. Man Tries to Cash Check Worth
$360,000,000
Criminals! Did you know they occasionally do
stupid things? Like Charles Ray Fuller, a one
man brain trust from Fort Worth, who tried to
cash a check for $360,000,000,000 (we believe
that many zeroes are pronounced "a
bajillionty"). Charles claimed that the pittance
was a gift from his girlfriend's mother, intended
to help him get set up in the record industry.
Seeing as the check was enough to buy an
archipelago and declare it the Nation of Record
Industry, the bank called the cops and an
investigation revealed that said girlfriend's
mother had no knowledge of doing Charles such
a massive solid. Too bad, because that kind of
money would have made him the richest man on
earth, and we're getting pretty sick of Warren
Buffet's smug self-satisfied grimace.
7. Demon Washes Ashore on New York
Beach
The loveable hairless animal (?) carcass
Island. Gawker, who broke the story, described
the unidentifiable hell-beast as "rodent-like
creature with a dinosaur beak. "Following the
picture's publication, the story was picked up by
every major television news outlet and a host of
veterinary experts were hauled in to classify
"Monty." Was it a dead bulldog? De-shelled sea

daily basis is, "Sylvia, what are your predictions
for 2008 and 2009?"
I predict so many new and interesting
things are coming for us within the next two
years. Some are positive changes that will affect
the world at large. Others are changes that may
affect only a certain group of people and will
improve their lives. Here are my Sylvia Browne
predictions for 2008 & 2009!
Around 2009 to 2010, I predict
Americans will start working on what I like to
call our "buts." There are problems that we are
aware of that make the global community
smaller. We have liked to say, "Our system
works"..but...
...Children are not properly fed, clothed,
educated, protected or given adequate medical
care.
...Many in our population do not have a
place to call home.
...Some of our youth get more attention
from gangs and drug dealers than they do
positive role models.
...People who are ready, willing and able
to work cannot find decent jobs.
...Our elderly are not cared for properly
either financially or medically.
...Some death row inmates are innocent.
...Some elected officials and large
corporations do not think of the welfare of the
people as a high priority - they'd rather just
increase their bank accounts.
I predict we'll develop strong resolve
and resources to address these problems and
come up with some good solutions.
I predict a great rise in skin cancer in
children until 2010. There is a lot of media
coverage about the UV rays and many products
to protect people against them. But people are
still often careless when it comes to the sun.
Then again, people could pay attention - and
reverse this prediction right out from under me.
I would certainly be all for that!
I predict the President elected sometime
between 2008 and 2020 will die in office from a

In 2008, I predict doctor's offices will
have a high-tech "aura scanner" for patients that
come to see them. This will be a highly
developed version of an MRI. A patient will

scan the body looking at their aura.
I predict we can truly say "goodbye" to
the common cold in 2009 or 2010. The solution
to the common cold involves heat. Keep in
mind that the body's first response when we
develop a cold is to come down with a fever.
Many doctors today no longer rush to push
patients to take temperature reducing
medications when they come down with a fever,
unless the fever is dangerous. They feel the
immune system is the patient's best medicine
and should be given a chance to fight back. So
as the immune system fights a cold with heat,
the cure for the common cold certainly may lie
in this first signal to heal.
I predict that a small cubicle will
become available in doctor's offices sometime
in 2009 and it will be heated to a very precise
temperature. There may be a special vapor
placed into the cubicle. Patients will stand in the
cubicle for approximately five minutes and the
rhinitis germ will be destroyed.
Another wonderful bit of good news on
the health front with this discovery - since this
cubicle can easily take on the rhinitis germ,
many people that have breathing problems with
allergies and asthma complications will find
some breakthroughs as well. We will see this
cubicle discovery used for healing for those
with breathing disorders. The cubicle will
become available in 2009 or 2010.
I predict yoga and martial arts will
remain just as popular, but a new form of
exercise will be introduced in 2008. It is a
passive form of exercise using machines to
exercise the muscles. It will be a very effective
form of exercise.
I predict hypnotic past-life regression
will become available through a group of
trained psychologists on both the east and west
coasts of the U.S.A. in 2009. It will prove to be
quite a success and will be widely practiced by
2011. []

from the light at the end of the tunnel by
December 2009. Europe will continue in it's
downward economic slide resulting in a fair
amount of social unrest.
War: The Israel-Palestine conflict will
simmer on and there will be a flashpoint there
around mid 2009, I predict a serious terrorist
attack in the UK and other lesser terrorist
attacks within continental Europe. The USA
will remain in Iraq and Afghanistan with things
becoming messier.
Political: Barack Obama's first problem
will be his inability or unwillingness to get US
troops out of Iraq and the Middle East, many
who voted for him will feel dissappointed by
much of his foreign policy. He will also struggle
to revive a very sick US economy and be
plagued by a scandal involving his wife,
Michelle. China will see massive political
protests at the close of 2009. Sarah Palin's
political ambitions will go up in smoke by mid-
2009 thanks to an embarrassing leak and
subsequent admission regarding her past.
Europe will start moving back to the left as a
result of the financial crisis and its fallout,
however this will eventually give way to a
massive veer to the right back to nationalism
and profound anti-EU sentiment. A massive
political scandal will rock America involving a
previous President.
Royals: Prince William will become
engaged to Kate Middleton. Another royal will
be credited with an act of bravery and yet
another will be involved in an accident at sea.
UFO's: There will be interesting UFO
sightings in Iran, Russia and a big one in Brazil,
there will also be a significant UFO sighting
from a commercial airplane involving multiple
witnesses. Disclosure by governments of any
knowledge of life on other planets or alien
visitation to this one will be no closer by the end
of 2009.
Celebrities and Showbiz: Amy
Winehouse will make a big comeback and
recovery sometime in late 2009, Bruce
Springsteen might enter politics, Madonna will
become engaged late 2009. Paris Hilton will be
involved in problems with the law.
Religion: The Catholic Church will
grow in strength as will Islam, both
beneficiaries of the economic slowdown. The
Anglican Church will continue its slide towards
eventual irrelevance. Buddhism will grow,

grow. A number of purported faith-based

10. The story of Jessica Cox, of Tucson, Ariz.
She was born without arms, but that has only
stopped her from doing one thing: using the
word "can't." Her latest project is becoming the
first pilot licensed to fly using only her feet.
With one foot manning the controls and the
other delicately guiding the steering column,
Cox, 25, soared to achieve a Sport Pilot
certificate. Her certificate qualifies her to fly a
light-sport aircraft to altitudes of 10,000 feet.
"She's a good pilot. She's rock solid," said
Parrish Traweek, 42, the flying instructor at San
Manuel's Ray Blair Airport.
9. An Australian man was operated on in June at
Hornsby Hospital in Berowra, where surgeons
removed 16 stainless steel washers from "down
under.” Fire Rescue officers in New South
Wales, Australia were called to alleviate the
man from his awkward predicament around 3
a.m. It was not clear how he got into the
predicament – but fire rescue officers spent
more than an hour trying unsuccessfully to
remove the washers. He was eventually taken to
the hospital where surgeons removed the
washers using fire brigade equipment. A
hospital spokesman said equipment normally
used to remove rings from fingers was
ineffective because of the thicker nature of the
washers.
8. Doctors called her a medical miracle. In May,
Val Thomas suffered two heart attacks and had
no brain waves for more than 17 hours. Rigor
mortis started to set in, and she was placed on a
respiratory machine. Her family said their
goodbyes and Thomas’ tubes were removed, but
she remained hooked on a ventilator as the
possibility of organ donation was discussed.
Surprisingly, Thomas woke up 10 minutes later
and started talking. She was then transferred to
the Cleveland Clinic so that specialists could
check her out, but doctors said they could find
nothing wrong with her. “I know God has
something in store for me, another purpose,”
Thomas said. “I don’t know what it is, but I’m
sure he’ll tell me.”
7. Next is a story about a 49-year-old Japanese
man who was suffering from abdominal pain in
late May. Surgeons in Japan thought they were
going to remove a tumor from the man – but
instead found a 25-year-old surgical towel that
had crumpled into what looked like a softball-
shaped tumor. The patient apparently had been
carrying the cloth since 1983, when surgeons
left it in him after minor ulcer surgery.
6. In November, a coroner in Britain determined
that a 12-year-old boy died after using too much
spray deodorant in a confined space. Daniel
Hurley collapsed in a January after spraying on
Lynx deodorant – made by Unilever, a global
company that manufactures Axe, Suave and
other deodorants in the U.S. -- in the bathroom
of his Derbyshire home. His father said the boy
was obsessed with grooming, often applying
lots of deodorant and cologne. An inquest was
told that a "volatile" agent in the deodorant
upset the boy's heart rhythm. He was
hospitalized and died five days later from a
cardiac arrhythmia.
5. The story of baby Lali. Born in New Delhi,
India, she has two faces, with two noses, two
pairs of lips and two pairs of eyes. She ate and
drank out of both mouths. She was born on
March 11 in a northern Indian village, where
she is still living and said to be doing well.
4. In June, this story grabbed tons of attention
with the headline: The New Club Drug:
Preparation H? That’s right. The topical
hemorrhoid medication reportedly is catching
fire as the latest "drug" to hit the New York City
club scene. The solution contains a medication
called phenylephrine HCL, which shrinks the
swollen tissues of hemorrhoids. It works by
constricting the nearby blood vessels that
surround the area. But the ingredient will shrink
other tissue as well. At the time, a New York
bouncer said men are slathering up their torsos
with the hemorrhoid cream to make themselves
look "ripped."
3. A mother who decided to abort her son
because he may have inherited a life-threatening
kidney condition was overjoyed when he
survived the procedure. Jodie Percival of
Nottinghamshire, England, said she made the
decision to abort baby Finley when she was
eight weeks pregnant. Percival's first son died of
multicystic dysplastic kidneys and her second
child Lewis was born with serious kidney
damage. A short time after the abortion, Percival
felt a fluttering in her stomach. She went to the
doctor for a scan and discovered she was 19
weeks pregnant. "I couldn't believe it,” Percival
said. "This was the baby I thought I'd
terminated.” Finley was born three weeks
premature - but is expected to lead a normal life.
2. It’s not a tumor … it’s a worm. Doctors
thought a Phoenix-area woman might have a
brain tumor, but it turned out there was
something else penetrating her brain – a worm.
Rosemary Alvarez started experiencing
numbness in her arm and blurred vision. She
went to the emergency room twice and had a CT
scan, but everything came up clear. It wasn’t
until doctors took a closer look at an MRI that
they discovered something very disturbing.
Alvarez was wheeled into surgery where
doctors were expecting to remove a tumor, but
they uncovered the worm instead, which they
removed. No one knows exactly where she
picked up the worm – but doctors said worms
can come from eating undercooked pork or can
be spread by people who don’t wash their hands
after using the bathroom.

took a hospital to court after she went in for a
leg operation and got a new anus instead. The
woman had been mixed up with another patient
suffering from incontinence. That patient was

If you've ever gazed at the night sky,
you've probably wished upon a shooting star
(which are really meteors).
But shooting stars do exist, and they're
as rare as one in 100 million.

first "hypervelocity" star careening out of a

Speaking of black holes, what could be
stranger?
Beyond a black hole's gravitational
border -- or event horizon -- neither matter nor
light can escape. Astrophysicists think dying
stars about three to 20 times the mass of the sun
can form these strange objects. At the center of
galaxies, black holes about 10,000 to 18 billion
times heavier than the sun are thought to exist,
enlarged by gobbling up gas, dust, stars and
small black holes.
What about mid-sized types? Perhaps
surprisingly, evidence is both scarce and
questionable for their existence.
8. Magnetars

The sun spins about once every 25 days,
gradually deforming its magnetic field.
Well, imagine a dying star heavier than
the sun collapsing into a wad of matter just a
dozen miles in diameter.
Like a spinning ballerina pulling his or
her arms inward, this change in size spins the
neutron star -- and its magnetic field -- out of
control.
Calculations show these objects possess
temporary magnetic fields about one million
billion times stronger than the Earth's. That's
powerful enough to destroy your credit card
from hundreds of thousands of miles away, and
deform atoms into ultra-thin cylinders.
7. Neutrinos

Pull out a dime from your pocket and
hold it up for a second... guess what? About 150
billion tiny, nearly massless particles called
neutrinos just passed through it as though it
didn't even exist.
Scientists have found that they originate
in stars (living or exploding), nuclear material
and from the Big Bang. The elementary
particles come in three "flavors" and, stranger
still, seem to disappear on a whim.
Because neutrinos occasionally do
interact with "normal" matter such as water and
mineral oil, scientists hope they can use them as
a revolutionary telescope to see beyond parts of
the universe obscured by dust and gas.

If you put all of the energy and matter of
the cosmos into a pie and divvy it up, the result
is shocking.
All of the galaxies, stars, planets,
comets, asteroids, dust, gas and particles
account for just 4 percent of the known
universe. Most of what we call "matter" -- about
23 percent of the universe -- is invisible to
human eyes and instruments.
For now.
Scientists can see dark matter's
gravitational tug on stars and galaxies, but are
searching feverishly for ways to detect it first-
hand. They think particles similar to neutrinos
yet far more massive could be the mysterious,
unseen stuff.
5. Dark Energy

What really has everyone on the planet
confused -- including scientists -- is dark
energy.
To continue with the pie analogy, dark
energy is a Garfield-sized portion at 73 percent
of the known universe. It seems to pervade all of
space and push galaxies farther and farther
away from one another at increasingly faster
speeds.
Some cosmologists think this expansion
will leave the Milky Way galaxy as an "island
universe" in a few trillion years with no other
galaxies visible.
Others think the rate of expansion will
become so great that it will result in a "Big Rip."
In this scenario, the force of dark energy
overcomes gravity to disassemble stars and
planets, the forces keeping particles sticking
together, the molecules in those particles, and
eventually the atoms and subatomic particles.
Thankfully, humankind probably won't be
around to witness to cataclysm.

4. Planets

It might sound strange because we live
on one, but planets are some of the more
mysterious members of the universe.
So far, no theory can fully explain how
disks of gas and dust around stars form planets
-- particularly rocky ones.
Not making matters easier is the fact that
most of a planet is concealed beneath its
surface. Advanced gadgetry can offer clues of
what lies beneath, but we have heavily explored
only a few planets in the solar system.
Only in 1999 was the first planet outside
of our celestial neighborhood detected, and in
November 2008 the first bona fide exoplanet
images taken.
3. Gravity

The force that helps stars ignite, planets
stay together and objects orbit is one of the most
pervasive yet weakest in the cosmos
Scientists have fine-tuned just about
every equation and model to describe and
predict gravity, yet its source within matter
remains a complete and utter mystery.
Some think infinitesimal particles called
gravitons exude the force in all matter, but
whether or not they could ever be detected is
questionable.
Still, a massive hunt is on for major
shake-ups in the universe called gravitational
waves. If detected (perhaps from a merger of
black holes), Albert Einstein's concept that the
universe has a "fabric" of spacetime would be
on solid ground.

Matter and energy abound in the
universe, but only in a few places is the roll of
the cosmic dice perfect enough to result in life.
The basic ingredients and conditions
necessary for this strange phenomenon are
better understood than ever before, thanks to
abundant access to life here on Earth.
But the exact recipe -- or recipes -- to go
from the basic elements of carbon, hydrogen,

1. Hurricane Ike (Texas/Louisiana,
September). One of the wildest and weirdest
hurricanes in recent years, Ike started its career
with a bang in the open Atlantic. It intensified
from tropical storm to Category 3 status in less
than nine hours on 3 September. A few days later,
Ike crossed the Caribbean and waltzed across
extreme western Cuba as a Cat 3. But Ike's peak
winds never regained major-hurricane force.
Instead, the system simply got bigger, eventually
packing some of the largest radii of hurricane-
force winds (125 miles) and tropical-storm force
winds (275 miles) ever measured. This posed a
major public communication challenge, as the
vast swath of wind was expected to stir up a storm
surge in the Galveston area far worse than people
might presume from the storm's Category 2 rating.
The worst of Ike's surge struck less-
populated areas just east of Galveston Island on
the night of 12-13 September, but the overall
damage was still tremendous: more than $30
billion (in inflation-adjusted dollars, that's the
third costliest U.S. hurricane on record). Much of
Galveston and nearby coastal towns were left in
shambles, and storm-surge damage extended well
east into Louisiana. Ike resulted in 82 U.S. deaths-
-among the highest tolls in recent decades--and
more than 200 people remain missing in the
hurricane's aftermath. The Boston Globe posted
an incredible Ike photo gallery.
2. Midwest rains and flooding (Iowa and
surrounding states, June). Although El Niño
often gets the rap for U.S. flooding, it was a
relentless storm track powered by La Niña that
focused heavy winter snows and spring rains
across a belt roughly from Kansas to Michigan. It
all culminated with two weeks of incredible rains
centered in two bands, one from central Iowa to
southern Wisconsin and another running from
eastern Illinois to southern Indiana. Some spots
notched more than 14" between June 1 and 15,
and a total of 15 stations had their wettest single
days on record, gauging anywhere from 4.5" to
9.5" of rain. The resulting floods managed to
topple a few of the marks set in the epic 1993
Mississippi flood. The most jaw-dropping
imagery came from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where
floodwaters spread to an almost-
incomprehensible extent. More than 42,000
people were evacuated and some 400 city blocks
were inundated as the Cedar River rose nearly a
foot above its previous record crest.
3. Hurricane Gustav (Louisiana, September). It
threatened to pummel New Orleans with the same
or greater ferocity than Katrina did in 2005, but in
the end, Gustav--as with many sequels--failed to
deliver the punch of the original. Except for a
sharp southwest jog in the northern Caribbean,
Gustav followed a remarkably straight
northwesterly path toward the Louisiana coast.
Fears of a Katrina repeat were stoked when
Gustav quickly reached Category 4 strength while
approaching western Cuba, and people left the
Louisiana coastline in droves--the state's largest
evacuation in history. But the hurricane never
quite recovered from its brief passage over Cuba,
and it plowed into the coast at borderline Cat. 2/3
strength near Grand Isle, just far enough west to
stave off another New Orleans disaster.
Nevertheless, Gustav left an impressive swath of
damage well inland, with countless trees and
power lines knocked down across Louisiana. In
all, 43 U.S. deaths were recorded, along with
nearly 100 others in the Caribbean.
4. Super Tuesday tornado outbreak (Midwest
and South, February). As if there weren't enough
drama in the air as political primaries unfolded
nationwide on February 5, nature threw a few
tornadoes into the mix--87, to be exact, causing
some precincts to close early. The parent storms
were sparked by a potent upper-level trough, but
perhaps the most unusual ingredient was a large
swath of moist, record-warm surface air that
swept into place more than a day ahead of time.
(More typically in a midwinter outbreak, such air
masses race north only hours before storms
develop.) Some of the worst damage was near
Nashville and Memphis and in star-crossed
Jackson, Tennessee, which endured its third major
tornado strike following hits in 1999 and 2003. If
nothing else, the onslaught is beefing up the city's
tornado awareness. Students at Union University
dove for cover as dormitories were heavily
damaged, but nobody died on campus. All told,
though, the tornadoes took 57 lives, making this
the deadliest U.S. outbreak since 1985.
5. Winter onslaught across northern tier
(Northwest/Midwest/Northeast, December). An
unusually potent jet stream brought multiple
waves of wintry weather across the northern half
of the nation from mid-December toward month's
end. The sustained cold was noticeable, if only
because recent years have brought so little of it,
but frozen precipitation was the real star of this
show. The Portland, Oregon, area saw its heaviest
snow in 29 years (11-13"), and several Wisconsin
cities had their snowiest Decembers on record,
less than a year after the state set many seasonal
snowfall records. The worst ice storm in New
Hampshire's history left thousands of customers
without power for days just before the holidays,
and hundreds were stranded at snow-crippled
airports from Seattle to Chicago.
6. Southeastern US drought slowly abates
(ongoing). The year opened with many parts of
the Southeast desperate for rain. Atlanta was at the
epicenter of the multi-year drought, with Lake
Lanier--the city's chief source of water--having
just set a record low on December 26, 2007. There
wasn't a single dramatic drought-buster, but
recurrent fronts managed to douse enough of the
Southeast by April to completely erase the region
of "exceptional" drought (the most dire category).
Slow improvement continued through the year.
Today, only a dimple of "extreme" drought
remains from northeast Georgia into southwest
North Carolina, while many adjacent areas are
now drought-free. However, Lake Lanier remains
only a foot above its record low and more than 17
feet below full. [GREAT GRAPHIC: you can

going to U.S. Drought Monitor Web site and using
the pull-downs.
7. California wildfires (June). The northwest
flow that dominated the U.S. in the first half of
2008 left much of California high and dry. Many
locales, including Los Angeles and San Francisco,
reported their driest springs on record. What
shocked many observers wasn't the wildfire itself-
-in a year like this, it's inevitable--but how quickly
it arrived and how intensely it raged. A freakish
round of low-precipitation thunderstorms swept
across the northern half of the state on June 20-21,
triggering more than 2,000 fires. Before summer
had even gotten going, huge fires were
devastating regions from the Big Sur area through
much of the forested north. By late July, though,
conditions had eased, and the rest of California's
fire season was comparatively tame outside of an
intense round of wildfires close to L.A. in
November.
8. January tornado outbreak (Midwest, South).
Even seasoned weather watchers were astounded
to see a tornado outbreak so far northwest so early
in the year. When twisters strike in January, it's
usually in the Deep South, where moisture is
plentiful year round. But on January 7-8, the
action was focused in Arkansas, Missouri, and
Tennessee. There were even two twisters in
southern Wisconsin; only one other had been
reported in that state in January since records
began in 1844. On January 9 and 10, the tornadoes
continued, but most were in the more
climatologically favored Deep South--except for a
true outlier that struck near Vancouver,
Washington, making it that state's first-ever
January tornado. All told, the outbreak was the
nation's second most prolific for January, but only
4 deaths were recorded.
9. Ohio snowstorm (March). Buffered by the
Appalachians and the Great Lakes, Ohio gets
many types of weather, but seldom in super-strong
doses. March 7-8 was the exception that proved
the rule, as much of Ohio was hammered by more
than a foot of snowfall. Columbus was buried by
20.8", with 15.4" of that total setting a new 24-
hour record. The storm was accompanied by
strong winds and biting cold, although
temperatures and overall hardship across Ohio fell
far short of the memorable Blizzard of 1978, when
bitter winds of up to 70 mph piled fresh and
existing snow into drifts that paralyzed the state
for days.
10. Boy Scout and Kansas State tornadoes
(June, Iowa). Hundreds of tornadoes ripped
across the nation's heartland in the spring of 2008,
but one in particular struck me with its poignancy.
More than 100 Boy Scouts and staff encamped on
a hilly, wooded site north of Omaha found
themselves fighting for their lives on June 11 as an
EF-3 twister tossed trees and destroyed a cabin
where many campers had taken shelter. More than
40 Scouts were injured, but only 4 died, in part
due to the quick action of peers who provided first
aid. The incident catalyzed fresh debate on the
need for dedicated tornado shelters. Less
publicized, but just as impressive, was an EF-4
tornado on the same evening that sliced across the
campus of Kansas State University, severely
damaging several buildings. Afterward, KSU vice
president Tom Rawson delivered what has to be
the most ironic weather quote of 2008: "The Wind
Erosion Lab is gone." Thankfully, the campus was
nearly empty and nobody was seriously hurt. []

Science is mostly an incremental process, a
slow peeling of the onion to offer small
glimpses of understanding. But over time,
scientists remove enough layers to expose
stunning truths about nature.
5. Stronger link between birds and dinosaurs
Paleontologists have long known that
modern birds are the closest living relatives of
the long-gone dinosaurs. But just how the
transition between dino and Big Bird happened
has not been fully understood.
This year, scientists uncovered more
fascinating new links between ancient dinosaurs
and their living feathered friends, which
emerged some 150 million years ago during the
Jurassic Period.
In November, scientists announced the
discovery of a fossilized dinosaur nest that
proves dinosaurs were forming bird-like nests
and laying eggs long before birds evolved.
Another link was established in October,
when paleontologists announced the discovery
of a fossilized dinosaur that apparently sported
tail feathers thought to have helped the creature
balance on tree branches.Though the creature
couldn't fly, it may represent a step in the
direction of feathers for flight.
And a third analysis of fossils revealed
that a huge carnivorous dinosaur called
Aerosteon had a breathing system much like
that of today's birds, with hollow bones that
filled with air and possible air sacs that would
have pumped air through its lungs.
4. Memory's limit found
Common knowledge — and phone
number conventions — have held that people
can fit about seven things in short-term
memory. But research announced this April
found that the true fundamental limit, when all
memory aids are taken out of the equation, is
actually about three or four.
Psychologists presented subjects with an
array of colored squares, then showed a single
colored square and asked people to recall if it
was the same color as the original square in its
position. The scientists used a mathematical
model that assumed people could only
remember three or four squares, and found that
it accurately predicted the spread of results on
the test.
The research doesn't mean we should
reduce phone numbers to four digits, though. In
most real-life situations, we can use memory
tricks, such as grouping items together (i.e.
breaking phone numbers into a chunk of three
digits plus a group of four) to improve on our
brain's minimal capacity.
3. Huge new population of gorillas
discovered
The critically endangered western
lowland gorilla has been nearing extinction due
to disease, hunting and deforestation. Until
recently, scientists had put the number living in
the wild at about 50,000.
But this August, the Wildlife
Conservation Society announced its scientists
had uncovered a previously unknown
population of about 125,000 gorillas living in
the Republic of Congo. The discovery was a
welcome bit of good news for the beleaguered
apes, and conservationists say it means their
efforts have been working.
But gorillas aren’t out of the woods yet.
They still face imminent threats, especially
from the deadly Ebola virus, which has
decimated many gorilla populations.
2. Electron filmed for the first time
In a motion-picture first, scientists
caught the movement of a single electron on
film.
The discovery, announced in February,
was made possible with a new technology that
generates extremely short pulses of intense laser
light to illuminate the particle. The resulting
movie shows an electron leaving an atom after
being excited by ultraviolet light. Since this
actually happened in much less time than a
second, the sequence was slowed down for
human eyes to last a full three seconds.
The groundbreaking achievement
should open up doors for new study into the
workings of atoms, not to mention a new genre
of film: subatomic cinema.
1. The Arctic melts
A piece of the year's most sobering news
is also some of its most significant. In
September, Arctic sea ice reached the second-
lowest level recorded since the beginning of the
satellite era, according to the National Snow
and Ice Data Center at the University of
Colorado. When stacked next to 2007's ultimate
record low, the picture is grim: Global
warming's effects are before us.
The news also spelled disaster for polar
bears, whose primary habitat is sea ice. In May
the Interior Department officially listed the
polar bear as a threatened species. Officials said
the decline of Arctic sea ice off Alaska and
Canada could result in two-thirds of polar bears
disappearing by 2050.
History Repeats: How
2008 Reflected the Past

For all the talk about change, everything
old seemed oddly new again in 2008.
The events of this year, perhaps more
than any other, had a way of dredging up
historic memories, bad and good — from the
ongoing, Depression-like economic scare to the
Civil Rights struggles that led to Barack
Obama's milestone election win.
Overall, 2008 was a year that made
more sense if you had paid attention in history
class. Here's how:
2008 was like the 1930s
With the economic plummet taking firm
hold of the national consciousness in the latter
half of the year, talk about the possibility of
"another Depression" had journalists
scrambling for their Cliff Notes on the original
incarnation. The Great Depression was long,
deep and devastating, and while it doesn't seem
likely the latest downturn will be anywhere near
as bad, lessons learned from the mistakes and
successes of the 1930s should come in handy
for today's politicians.
2008 was like the 1980s
The world descended upon China in
August for the Summer Olympics, turning a
spotlight on the country for better (friendly
people, rich culture) or for worse (media
restrictions, controversial gymnasts). It felt a bit
like the 1980s, when the insular, 30-year-old
republic first started to open its doors to the
West, seeking economic progress and
acceptance. What the world saw was a big,
complex place filled with potential, but one also
facing some serious growing pains in the form
of student protests.
2008 was like the 1970s
Also in August, Russia rolled into
neighboring nation and former Soviet republic
Georgia in an invasion eerily reminiscent of the
USSR's expansionary campaigns during the
Cold War. Back then, the United States was
committed to fighting the spread of
Communism and backed the Soviets'
opponents. Today, things are a bit more
complicated, and there was brief but widespread
alarm that the United States and its allies may
be forced to pick up arms against Russia again.
Georgia and Russia ultimately came to a peace
agreement on their own, though observers
worry it could be a sign of things to come.
2008 was like 2005
As Hurricane Ike sped towards the U.S.
Gulf Coast in early September all eyes were on
New Orleans, which just three years earlier had
been ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. Luckily for
that city's vulnerable levees but unfortunately
for the state of Texas, the storm shifted
westward and hit the low-lying island of
Galveston as well as Houston. Advanced, urgent
evacuation orders were credited with saving
many lives, but as happened in 2005, many
people ignored the call to flee.
2008 was like the 1960s
Barack Obama was the uncontested
newsmaker of the year with his historic election
win on Nov. 4, which will make him the nation's
first African-American president when he is
inaugurated Jan. 20. It's a momentous occasion,
especially considering that when Obama was
born in 1961 at the height of the Civil Rights
movement and during the summer of Freedom
Rides, blacks hadn't yet been guaranteed the
right to vote safely and without discrimination.

Astronomers have continued to cast
their eyes to the heavens, with bigger and better
telescopes and as much passion as ever this
year, but some of the coolest findings of 2008
were right in our own backyard, or at least
looked like they were.
From worlds nearby like Mercury and
Mars to those beyond our solar system,
planetary science saw a boon. As for extrasolar
planets, astronomers bagged at least 50 newbies
this year.
"It's been a very exciting year for
exoplanet discoveries," said Michael Liu, an
astronomer at the University of Hawaii.
What's responsible for the surge of
exoplanet detections?
"The big picture is that a wide variety of
new technologies, both instruments on existing
telescopes and new dedicated telescopes, are
really allowing astronomers to do much more
sensitive measurements, and thus leading to a
real bonanza of discoveries,"
And there's more. Here are five favorite
findings in astronomy for 2008:
1. Alien worlds
With the extrasolar planet tally now well
above 300, astronomers seem to be on track for
spotting another Earth (the astronomical
jackpot) before long. Along the way this year, a
jaw-dropping announcement came in
November when two teams of astronomers
reported they had snapped direct images of
exoplanets.
Geoffrey Marcy of the University of
California, Berkeley, calls the images "the most
spectacular thing in 2008."
"In my own professional opinion this is
by far the most definitive picture of a planet
ever taken," Marcy said during a telephone
interview, referring to the direct image by the
Hubble Space Telescope of the planet called
Fomalhaut b.
The gold rush of exoplanet discoveries
this year boils down to new techniques and
observatories as well as energetic astronomers
involved, Marcy said.
Some other highlights include: the least-
massive planet, weighing in at just three times
the mass of Earth; the hottest planet, with
temperatures reaching about 4,000 degrees
Fahrenheit (2,200 degrees Celsius); and three
so-called super-Earths orbiting a star.
Astronomers like Marcy predict the
upcoming year will bring us even closer to
detecting Earth's twin. For instance, NASA's
Kepler mission is scheduled to launch in March
with the goal of finding rocky planets about the
size of Earth that orbit within the habitable
2. Martian life?
The red planet has gotten celebrity
treatment this past year, with the touchdown of
NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander in May, the
continuing presence of the Mars Exploration
Rover twins (Spirit and Opportunity) and
NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (which
has imaged nearly 40 percent of the planet).
A major goal of such missions has been
to find signs of past or present liquid water, the
main ingredient for life. That's why Phoenix
snagged a star-studded headline when the lander
collected water ice near Mars' north pole this
year.
Earlier in the year, Spirit found deposits
of silica in Gusev Crater, suggesting, scientists
said, that hot water once flowed through the
Martian soil in hydrothermal vents. As on Earth,
these hydrothermal vents may have once
harbored life. The discovered silica could
preserve fossils of such ancient life if it did
indeed exist there.
And just in from MRO — evidence of
carbonates on the Martian surface. Since
carbonates can't survive in acidic, harsh
conditions, the mineral finding suggests any
microbes crawling around when Mars was wet
could've enjoyed a cushy existence.
3. Dark energy
Scientists were hot on the trail this year
of a mysterious "force" called dark energy that
has been expanding the universe at an
increasing pace and was only discovered about
10 years ago.
Though, admittedly, scientists say they
are more than a few years away from solving
the puzzler of what dark energy is, a new
method this year confirmed its existence,
suggesting the force is stifling the growth of
galaxies in the universe. Basically, in an
expanding universe dominated by dark energy,
galaxies fly away from one another rather than
mingle and merge.
These results also suggest dark energy
takes the form of what Einstein called the
cosmological constant — a term in Einstein's
theory of general relativity that represents the
possibility of empty space having a density and
pressure associated with it.
4. Black hole antics
Black holes are so dense that nothing,
not even light, can escape their gravitational
grips. Though invisible, astronomers have
inferred the presence of the dark behemoths
from their effects on nearby objects. And this
year, it seems, all the crazies came out of their
cosmic closets.
Take the fastest spinning black hole,
found to whirl around at speeds approaching the
speed of light.
And when it comes to obesity, one black
hole could've gobbled up 18 billion suns. This
giant would dwarf the smallest black hole found
this year, weighing in at about 3.8 times the
mass of our sun and spanning just 15 miles (24
km) in diameter.
Researchers also found this year that
some supermassive black holes, which reside at
the centers of many or all galaxies, spew out
giant bubbles from the tips of their jets. (As
material falls into the gravitational clutches of a
black hole, the energy can be spit out as jets of
radiation and high-speed particles.) The bubbles
ultimately pop, spilling their gaseous guts.
Turns out, the hot gas keeps the black hole and
its galaxy from ballooning to mega sizes.
Black holes can also take the form of
"masked fugitive." Computer simulations
revealed that when two black holes merge, the

energy produced can kick the newly merged
black hole clear out of its galaxy.
Also, for the first time this year,
scientists detected such a rogue black hole
racing along at 5,900,000 mph (2,650
kilometers per second).
5. Solving Mercury mysteries
More than half of our solar system's
smallest planet (Pluto once took this honor),
Mercury, had remained a mystery until this year.
On Jan. 14, NASA's MESSENGER probe made
its first flyby of Mercury, beginning a mission to
image the entire planet.
From the get-go, the probe sent back
intriguing images, including clear evidence for
volcanoes. Images of the Caloris basin showed
hints of lava flows and the presence of a shield
volcano larger than the state of Delaware, with
gently sloping sides.
And Mercury is indeed shrinking as its
iron-rich core slowly cools. Scientists had
speculated this much from images taken during
the Mariner 10 mission in 1974. But
MESSENGER images showed more faults than
did Mariner 10, suggesting the strain from the
planet's contraction was at least one-third
greater than originally thought.
More to come: The thousands of images
and other data collected by MESSENGER
could also shed light on other Mercury
mysteries, including the planet's relatively giant
core, which makes up about two-thirds of the
planet's mass. One idea is that huge impacts
hundreds of millions of years ago might have
stripped the innermost planet of its original
surface. []

No. 10 - Adam Walsh
The Walsh family suffered for more than
two decades with the knowledge that their son's
case might never be solved. Twenty-seven years
is a long time to live with that type of heartache.
A pain compounded by the family memories
that they missed: school plays, graduations,
marriage, grandchildren. While nothing can
alleviate their pain, the Walsh family did receive
some closure yesterday when Florida police
officially named the person responsible for six-
year-old Adam Walsh's death.
Yesterday's events resolved a horrific
incident that was set in motion on July 27, 1981,
when Adam's mother, Reve Walsh, took him on
a shopping trip to Sears in Hollywood, Florida.
In the store, Adam asked his mother if he could
watch some children play video games while
she finished her shopping. She agreed, and he
stayed behind while she searched for a new
lamp.
Reve was not gone long, but when she
returned to the video game section, Adam was
nowhere to be found. Frightened, she asked a
store clerk to page her son over the intercom.
Seconds turned into minutes, but there was no
sign of Adam. He had disappeared.
The events leading to Adam's
disappearance remain unclear. According to
some reports, the group of children that Adam
was with was thrown out of the store for arguing
over a game and Adam was mistakenly asked to
leave with them. Investigators believe that
Adam went outside, where he was abducted
near the store entrance.
The case continued without viable clues
or evidence until August 10, 1981, when Adam's
severed head was found in a drainage canal in
Vero Beach, Florida. The location was roughly
120 miles from the site of Adam's abduction. To
date, the rest of his remains have never been
found.
Five days later, on August 15, 1981,
Adam's parents had an empty-casket funeral for
their son.
Rather than dwell on their sorrow, Reve
and her husband, John Walsh, established the
Adam Walsh Outreach Center for Missing
Children on August 19, 1981. Two months later,
the couple testified before Congress on behalf
of the Missing Children Act and the Missing
Children's Assistance Act. As a result of their
efforts, both of these bills were passed.
The first break in Adam's case came in
October 1983, when suspected serial killer,
Ottis Toole, confessed to the brutal slaying.
However, despite having provided investigators
with an accurate description of the crime, police
were unwilling to name him as the killer.
Several key pieces of evidence, including
blood-stained carpeting from Toole's car and the
car itself were lost by police, leaving them with
little evidence to tie him to the crime. Toole
eventually recanted his confession.
Despite the reluctance by police to
charge Toole in his son's death, John Walsh
remained convinced that Toole was responsible.
According to Walsh, there were other items
found at Toole's home which suggested that he
was involved with the crime, including a pair of
green shorts and a sandal that were similar to
what Adam was wearing the day he
disappeared.
As the case continued, Walsh became a
well-known advocate for missing children. In
1988, he was selected as the host of the FOX
television show America's Most Wanted, a
program that profiles fugitives who are wanted
by law enforcement for a variety of crimes. To
date, the program has assisted in the capture of
over one thousand criminals.
In September 1996, Ottis Toole died of
liver disease while serving a life sentence for a
series of other crimes. Toole's niece contacted
John Walsh and told him that her uncle had
made a startling deathbed confession, detailing
the events of Adam's murder. Nevertheless,
authorities were skeptical about the confession.
Toole and his alleged partner, convicted serial
killer Henry Lee Lucas, had confessed to
hundreds of homicides over the years, many of
which had been proven false.
Adam's murder made headlines again in
January 2007, when theories surfaced that
convicted serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer could
have been responsible for the child's death. Two
witnesses had allegedly claimed to have seen a
man matching Dahmer's description at the mall
the day Adam was abducted. Investigators
examined a possible link, but were unable to
come up with one. John Walsh himself issued a
statement following the publication of the
theory, stating that there was no credible
information to suggest that Dahmer had
anything to do with his son's murder.
Over the years, the Walsh family lost
much of their hope that Adam's murder would
be solved. However, on December 16, 2008,
Hollywood Police Chief Chadwick E. Wagner
held a press conference about the case.
"I am here today to discuss and bring
some closure to the Adam Walsh abduction and
homicide investigation that began over 27 years
ago," Wagner said. "Consistent with the
opinions of investigators past and present, I
agreed with the ultimate conclusion of this
independent investigation, that Ottis Toole was
the perpetrator of this crime. As we know, Ottis
Toole is deceased and formal, legal action is not
possible, nor is it something that the Walsh
family is seeking. However, in the interest of
justice, the Hollywood Police Department is
announcing today that it is our determination
and conclusion that Ottis Toole was the
abductor and murderer of Adam Walsh. If Ottis
Toole was alive today, he would be arrested for
the abduction and murder of Adam Walsh on
July 27, 1981."
John and Reve Walsh, with their
daughter, Meghan, were present at the press
conference. Following Wagner's announcement,
John Walsh made his own statement to the
media.
"For 27 years, we've been asking who
can take a 6-year-old boy and murder and
decapitate him. We needed to know. We needed
to know," Walsh said. "The not knowing has
been a torture, but that journey's over."
While his own personal journey for
justice has ended, Walsh made it clear that his
work as an advocate for missing children is far
from over.
"We're still going to be the parents of a
murdered child for the rest of our lives [but]
we're still going to try to change laws and
change the way police do business."
No. 09 - Brianna Denison
On the morning of Jan. 20, 2008, college
sophomore Brianna Denison, 19, was abducted
from a friend's house near the University of
Nevada's Reno campus. According to police,
the teen had been sleeping in the living room at
the time of the incident.
Roughly one month later, on Feb. 15,
2008, Brianna's body was found near an
industrial complex south of Reno. An autopsy
revealed that she had been sexually assaulted
and strangled. Evidence found at the scene --
two pair of intertwined women's panties – led
police to suspect that they were dealing with a
cold and calculating killer, who enjoyed
taunting the authorities. The panties ultimately
revealed DNA from an unknown man and
woman, suggesting the killer could have taken

The case continued until Nov. 26, 2008,
when police received a tip that led them to
James Michael Biela, 27, a resident of Sparks,
Nev. Police say that DNA obtained from Biela
links him to Brianna's murder, as well as at least
two other sexually motivated attacks that
occurred near the Reno campus between
October and December 2007.
As a result of the DNA tests, Biela was
arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, murder and
sexual assault. He has been incarcerated at the
Washoe County Jail, where he is currently being
held without bond.

No. 08 - Shackled California Teen
A disturbing case of alleged child abuse
and torture came to light in Tracy, Calif., on
Dec. 01, 2008, when a half-naked and
emaciated 17-year-old boy managed to escape
from a residence where he reportedly had been
held captive for roughly one year.
According to police, the boy ran into In-
Shape City gym at about 4 p.m. Monday and
asked an employee to hide him. Witnesses say
that the boy, who was covered in soot, urine and
feces, was carrying a chain that was padlocked
to his ankle.
The boy was initially confused about
where he was and how he got there; however, he
eventually told investigators that he ran away
from a Sacramento foster home in 2007 to look
for his biological family. The boy was reported
missing; at some point he made his way from
Sacramento to Tracy, a 70-mile journey, and
allegedly ended up being held captive in a tract
home less than a block from the gym.
Based upon the boy's initial statement
and his poor physical condition, police went to
the house the boy identified as the place where
he had been held. They took into custody a
married couple identified as 34-year-old
Michael Luther Schumacher and 30-year-old
Kelly Layne Lau-Schumacher. At that time, the
couple's four children, ages 1, 3, 9 and 11, were
placed in the custody of Child Protective

According to Robinson, a search of the
home revealed evidence that further supports
the boy's statement to police. As a result,
Schumacher and his wife were booked into San
Joaquin County Jail on suspicion of felony
conspiracy to commit a misdemeanor, torture,
kidnapping, false imprisonment by violence and
child beating. Both are being held in lieu of
nearly $1.2 million in bail.
In the days following the Schumacher's
arrest, investigators took two more suspects into
custody on similar charges. The third suspect,
43-year-old Caren Ramirez, had become the
teen's legal guardian approximately four years
ago, when child-welfare officials took him away
from his father. Not long thereafter, a warrant
was issued for Ramirez, for assaulting and
abusing the boy, and he was placed into a
Sacramento foster home. According to
Sacramento County court records, Ramirez was
convicted in 2007 on one felony count of
inflicting corporal injury on a child. Police say
Ramirez also has three outstanding warrants for
her arrest in the same county.
The fourth suspect has been identified as
Anthony Waiters, 29, a neighbor of the first
three suspects. Waiters was booked into jail on
suspicion of six felonies, including conspiracy,
torture, false imprisonment, child beating and
child endangerment. Due to a court-ordered gag
order, the details of Waiters' alleged
involvement remain unknown.

On the morning of Sept. 4, 2008,
firefighters with the Stem and Providence fire
departments in North Carolina responded to a
house fire at 3220 Tump Wilkins Road. The
house and much of its contents were destroyed;
however, firefighters were able to determine
that the residents, 34-year-old William "Scott"
Morris and his wife, 28-year-old Kelly Currin
Morris, were not home when the fire broke out.

young children, ages 8 and 5, were in school at
the time of the incident. It was initially believed
that Kelly was at work; however, investigators
soon learned that she never showed up that

2008 was a momentous year for
spaceflight. It saw the launch of the world's
most powerful gamma-ray telescope, the space
station's largest room, India's first moon probe,
and even a space tourist who happens to be
America's first second-generation space
traveler.
Here are the Top 10 stories of 2008:
10. The first second-generation space
travelers launch
Richard Garriott, the son of former
NASA astronaut Owen Garriott, became the
first American second-generation spaceflyer to
reach orbit when he launched aboard a Soyuz
rocket in October. For a hefty $30 million, paid
to the Russian Federal Space Agency through
the private U.S. firm Space Adventures, Garriott
booked himself a 10-day vacation on the
International Space Station (ISS). During his
stay Garriott conducted science experiments,
educational outreach activities, and even
brought aboard a flash drive loaded with records
of humanity's greatest achievements, copies of
the avatars in one of his games and digital
versions of selected humans' DNA, including
that of comedian Stephen Colbert, host of "The
Colbert Report." By coincidence, Garriott flew
to the space station while it was under the
command of Russian cosmonaut Sergei Volkov,
himself a second-generation spaceflyer and the
son of famed cosmonaut Alexander Volkov. The
two spaceflyers met in orbit and returned to
Earth together in later October.
9. The most shuttle missions to fly in
one year since 2002
NASA launched four space shuttle
missions in 2008 — and returned each of them
safely back home. That's the most shuttle liftoffs
since 2002, and especially noteworthy in the
wake of the Columbia tragedy of 2003. This
year's flights each delivered vital components to
the ISS, including major contributions from
Japan, Europe and Canada. And the year almost
saw one more shuttle flight — the final
servicing mission to Hubble — but that launch
was delayed until 2009 because of glitches on
the orbiting telescope. NASA currently plans to
launch nine more shuttle missions before
retiring the fleet in 2010. Six of those flights are
scheduled for 2009.
8. Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope
launches
Some of the cosmos' most puzzling
phenomena — supermassive black holes, dark
matter and mysterious explosions called
gamma-ray bursts — may soon be more
understandable thanks to NASA's Fermi
Gamma-ray Space Telescope, which launched
in June. The world's most powerful telescope
for observing the universe in high-energy
gamma-ray light, the observatory was originally
called the Gamma-ray Large Area Telescope
(GLAST), but was rechristened after Italian
scientist Enrico Fermi once the telescope was
up and running in space.
7. Europe's first cargo ship flies
The flotilla of space station-bound
spacecraft had been static for the last nine years
until a new ship was added to the ranks in
March. Europe's Jules Verne Automated
Transfer Vehicle was the first of a new fleet of
unmanned cargo ships designed to ferry food
and supplies to astronauts on the orbiting
laboratory. After launching and docking at the
station successfully, the vehicle perished as
designed in a fiery plunge through the
atmosphere back to Earth. The double-decker
bus-sized spacecraft is due to be succeeded by
at least four sister freighter ships.
6. The International Space Station
turns 10
For the past 10 years the ISS has been
serenely floating above us, steadily growing in
size and hosting more and more scientific
cooperation between nations. The $100 billion
space station marked its 10th anniversary Nov.
20, a decade after its first room, the Russian-
built Zarya module, was launched into space.
Over the years the lab has grown from the
equivalent of a studio apartment into a three-
bedroom house, hosted about 165 visitors from
15 countries, and circled the Earth more than
57,309 times. In June the laboratory got its
biggest addition yet, the tour bus-sized Japanese
Kibo module. The stately space station is not yet
complete, though — eight of NASA's remaining
shuttle missions will deliver its remaining
components by 2010.
5. Privately-developed Falcon 1 rocket
finally reaches orbit
In a major milestone, the Space
Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) firm
successfully launched its Falcon 1 rocket in
September, capping off the company's six-year
effort to lift the first non-governmental rocket
into space. Arriving on the heels of three
consecutive failed launch attempts, the Falcon
1's success was no foregone conclusion. The
liquid-fueled booster's liftoff from the
Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific Ocean proved
that SpaceX's engineering is sound, and the
company is on its way toward fulfilling its goal
of offering low-cost commercial rocket
launches. It took about $100 million to develop
and test the booster, but future flights should
carry an $8 million price tag or less, the
company said. SpaceX is now preparing to
launch its larger Falcon 9 rocket from Cape
Canaveral, Fla., and is one of two firms to win
a NASA space station cargo contract on
Tuesday.
4. Indian probe orbits the moon
India's Chandrayaan 1 probe became the
nation's first spacecraft to travel beyond Earth
orbit when it arrived at the moon in November
to begin a planned two-year mission. The
vehicle carried a mini craft painted in the red,
white and green pattern of India's flag that
crash-landed at the moon's south pole, taking
pictures on its way down. The achievement
establishes India's growing space prowess and
sets the stage for the country's planned future
goals of starting a manned space program and

3. China conducts its first spacewalk
In another first for a nation building up
its space program, Chinese astronauts carried
out their country's first spacewalk in September.
China launched three astronauts on the
Shenzhou 7 mission, the nation's third manned
spaceflight. Zhai Zhigang became the first
Chinese spacewalker when he stepped out of his
space ship wearing a new Chinese-made
spacesuit. During his 20-miute foray into space,
Zhigang retrieved a test sample of lubricant
from outside the vehicle, and waived a Chinese
flag at the camera that was broadcasting his feat
live. The event marked an impressive
technological achievement for China, only the
third country after Russia and the United States
to independently launch a person into space.
2. Robot safely lands farther north on
Mars than ever before
NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander touched
down on the red planet in May in the first
successful Mars landing since 2004. The
stationary spacecraft spent more than five
months testing the arctic plains environment for
signs of habitability by potential Martian life,
and confirmed the presence of water ice below
the ground. Phoenix touched down farther north
on Mars than any lander before it, and delivered
a treasure trove of images and experimental
results from our neighboring planet. After its
prolific research stint, the lander finally ran out
of power on Nov. 2 due to decreasing sunlight
caused by the arctic transition from summer to
fall and light-obscuring atmospheric dust.

On Oct. 1 the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration turned 50 years old,
marking a half century of achievements in space
exploration that many would have doubted were
possible before its founding in 1958. While
some people are still smarting over the
continued absence of flying cars, most can
recognize that NASA has come a long way
since the days when Americans watched with
envy as Sputnik flew overhead. We won the
moon (and may be racing back to it all over
again), built a fleet of reusable space shuttles,
and worked with other nations to construct a
continuously-occupied floating space station for
scientific research. There have also been
horrific tragedies along the way: the lives of the
Apollo 1, Challenger and Columbia astronauts
attest to the fact that those great achievements
weren't attained without a price. But for all the
heartbreaks, setbacks and even public boredom
with NASA, Americans can't seem to give up
the dream of space. Who knows what the next
50 years will bring?

the surface of the Martian arctic plains from its
landing on May 25 until it lost power on Nov. 2.
NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter
(MRO) has used its high-resolution instruments
to probe the planet's surface from orbit and just
finished its two-year primary mission.
NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers,
Spirit and Opportunity, marked their fourth
anniversary on the planet in January (the rovers
will celebrate their fifth anniversary in January
2009).
Water, water everywhere?
While many conditions are considered
important for life to arise on a planet or moon,
the one that is essential for life as we know it is
liquid water. So NASA scientists trying to
answer the question of habitability have used
the mantra "follow the water" for their missions.
Though Mars is bone dry today,
scientists have known for some time that
features including what look like gullies, river
beds, and possibly lakebeds suggest that water
once flowed on its surface.
But when that water flowed, whether or
not it was hospitable to life, and whether it was
the result of rainfall, melting ice or groundwater
were still big questions — questions that
Phoenix, MRO and other missions have helped
to at least partially answer this year.
Several processes have been implicated
in forming water-related surface features,
including groundwater and potentially oceans
(as evidenced by MRO images), a lake inside a
crater (also found by MRO), possible
hydrothermal springs (also MRO), massive
flash floods, and possibly even rainfall
(including some evidence from rovers). Large
bodies of water that persisted for a long time are
prime places for life to have potentially
emerged that scientists can further explore.
Evidence had originally suggested that
much of the precipitation, flooding and other
actions by water ended after the first billion
years or so of Mars' 4.5 billion year history, but
one study from this year used MRO's HiRISE
imager and found light-toned deposits that
suggest the planet was wet for a billion years
longer still. Opal deposits detected by MRO
also suggest a longer wet period for Mars.
Widespread water
Another MRO study, which looked at a
type of clay mineral called phyllosilicates (clays
are formed in the presence of water), suggests
that water was more widespread on Mars'
surface than was previously thought.
Phoenix was able to confirm the
presence of an underground layer of water ice in
Mars' arctic plains (first suggested by
observations from NASA's Mars Odyssey
orbiter made in 2002). Scientists are now poring
over the data from Phoenix's analysis of arctic
dirt to see if that ice layer might once have been
liquid during past periods when Mars' orbital tilt
made the north pole a warmer place.
Preliminary results suggest this may have been
the case, as Phoenix detected the signatures of
clays in the surface dirt.
Whether or not any of the water held in
the polar ice caps turns to liquid below the
surface is not known, but another MRO study
this year found that the crust below the northern
polar cap was exceptionally thick, which
suggests that the planet is colder than previously
thought, meaning that if that does turn to liquid,
it's likely much deeper than anticipated.
Harsh or benign?
While water has clearly been present in
Mars' past, it's less clear how hospitable that
water would have been to any potential Martian
microbes or other primitive life forms.
Opportunity data, newly analyzed this
year, shows water in its roving area would have
been very briny — while the finding doesn't rule
out life entirely, even the toughest halophiles
(salt-loving) organisms known on Earth would
have trouble thriving in these salt-choked
waters, scientists said.
Previous findings from the MER rovers
also painted an unfriendly picture for life in
another way: They detected acidic dirt with
plenty of sulfates — indicative of volcanic
activity — that suggest that the water that once
existed in the areas of the planet they are
exploring (closer to the equator) was acidic and
therefore less hospitable to life.
But a recent analysis of MRO data found
pockets of the surface that may have escaped
the acid bath. The orbiter detected signatures of
carbonates, which dissolve in acids; their
presence indicates that some areas of the surface
were less hostile to life and could have
preserved signatures of any life that may have
persisted there.
Phoenix also found signs of a more
pleasant place for potential life, with its
instruments indicating that the dirt at its landing
site is alkaline (a surprise to scientists given the
acidic nature of the surface elsewhere).
Samples of Martian dirt dug up by
Phoenix also showed signs of perchlorate, a
compound that could act as an energy source for
Martian microbes.
MRO also detected a curious signature
that could indicate life was once present on the
surface: reduced iron. On Earth, reduced (or
ferrous) iron is generally formed by
microorganisms, though other processes, such
as reaction with organic carbon brought by a
comet impact could account for the signature.

Cycling climate
Understanding the climate of Mars, both
past and present, is also important to gauging
the planet's potential habitability, and various
missions have contributed to the picture of
Mars' climate this year.
It was known that Mars' climate changes
as its orbital axis wobbles (changes angles),
with the poles and equator alternately warming
and cooling. Evidence of this showed up in new
MRO images that suggest past equatorial
glaciers and repeated episodes of glaciation on
Mars. MRO has even found current glaciers
outside of Mars' polar regions, buried beneath
aprons of debris (which keep the ice from
sublimating), which likely formed under a
different climate regime than currently governs
the planet.
Variations in sediment layers observed
by MRO also provide evidence for the effects
that Mars' changing climate can have on the
surface of the planet.
Above the surface, the European Space
Agency's Mars Express orbiter detected dry ice
(or frozen carbon dioxide) clouds in Mars'
atmosphere that cast shadows on the surface
below and affect regional weather and wind
patterns.
Phoenix also observed clouds overhead,
which increased as the landing site transitioned
into northern hemisphere winter. The lander
even observed snow falling from high in the air
and frost forming at the surface.
Phoenix also monitored the cycling of
water between the surface and the atmosphere
from night to day. In warmer, wetter times,
more water droplets may have stuck to the
surface, creating a film of water that some
microbes are capable of living in.
While these findings have filled in some
pieces in the puzzle of Mars' past, there are still
many holes left to fill in. The MER rovers,
MRO and other orbiters and the upcoming Mars
Science Laboratory (delayed until 2011 in
November) and MAVEN missions will all aim
to find more clues that will help scientists put
together a bigger picture of Mars or Mars' past,
especially its habitability.
