Where does your money go?!
Additional Information Sheet to Branch Newsletter - Quarter 2 (2009) issue 5
Our branch is an independent charity run only by volunteers, with the supportand guidance of the central RSPCA Head Office. To give you an idea on theanimals we see through our kennels and the costs involved that mean we have toconstantly raise more and more funds, we’ve pulled together case studies of oneof the dogs and one of the cats that we’ve helped re-home.

 April 2009:

I am up at 6.00am to walk him, so thanks for that. He bashes his head on thebedroom door to wake me. My daughter Lyn walks him mid morning, my son Chriswalks him late afternoon and evening.

He was stabbed on the nose by a hedgehog (Ziggy thought it was a ball), he leapt up in surprise.

He doesn't like to sound of my guitars. I'm a musician and that's all I need, another critic.

Something in his diet caused the most amazing, eye watering wind in the first few days. If it continues then we need to find a way of bottling it for caravans &camping.

He sounds like a bowling ball coming down the stairs.May 2009:

He tried to sniff the hoover hose with the motor running and got his nose stuck.

He has been off the leash since the 2nd week when we are on Army Ranges in Ash Vale and sitswhen called (except when chasing rabbits - Ziggy'sturning circle is too wide at full sprint and therabbits nip away on the inside).

He has made lots of doggie pals, including 3RSPCA rescue dogs and we meet up when walking.

Everyone is impressed when he sits at the curb but I have noticed fresh air between his bum and the ground - the cheeky bugger.

He loves startling cats, there are 2 next door and he eyes them up then pretendsto walk away before suddenly peeking round the corner and catching them moving. The cats freeze and Ziggy walks in through the front door with his head held high.

He chases the Gatwick to Reading Express diesel train, the Alton to Waterlooelectric train and the occasional Chinook helicopter. They don't come back for 20mins after Ziggy sees them off.

He bounces up to 5ft high in thick heather and runs at full speed before rolling intoshort heather and long grass.

His front paws are so mobile, he grasps, pounces and wrestles and he vocalises somuch now, from happy little growls and groans to pay attention to me whines. July 2009:

Tennis Balls Can Be Used More Than Once: Ziggy has at last realised that tennisballs can be used several times. After ripping balls to shreds within minutes of receiving them, he has finally understood the concept of re-use. We used moreballs than Wimbledon before his revelation.

Beware of Canoes: Ziggy is competitive and he likes to win. So there we werewalking alongside the canal when suddenly two canoes came speeding past. Ziggy was up for a race and sprinted off, overtaking them along the towpath beforetrying to round them up. Ziggy forgot about the water. I have never seen a doglook so surprised as he went under. I had to pull him out and he gave me a dirty look for saving him. Ha! There's gratitude for you.

Why Staffies Used To Have No Tail: Ziggy loves rolling in the grass. He will do it every 10 yards when he's in the mood. So there he was rolling away beside a cycle path, He forgot his tail was lying in the pathway. As the bike ran over the end heleapt up, did a full 360 degree turn to find out where the pain had come from and by that time the cyclist was gone. Ziggy never did find out what happened but hegives that section of lawn a wide berth now.

Ziggy Does Coke: Ziggy found a plastic bottle of Coke, threw it around, picked it up, dropped it, this continued for about 10 mins. Then his lower jaw started working on the bottle. Whoosh! His whole head disappeared in a brown cloud and he jumped back in surprise. He decided the bottle needed showing who was boss.Every time he picked it up the bottle squirted more Coke in his face, down histhroat or in his ear. We had to get the garden hose out to clean a Sticky Staffy.

They are doing absolutely fab! I did decide to rename them in the end - Millie (Tutti) and Mollie (Fruity). Over the week they have become so much more confident, I can't believehow far they have come. Millie is a right little chatterbox. She follows me all round thehouse everywhere I go and 'meows' until I give her fuss.I worked from home a couple of mornings last week and got very little work done - how could I resist her purring! And Mollie loves nothing more than having her tum tickled in themornings. She sat on my lap for the first time on Saturday which I was chuffed about, asure sign of things to come! They are both looking forward to going outside to explore. They sit with their noses pressed up against the french windows longingly looking at the birds in the garden! They hardly ever go under the bed anymore which I hope means they are feeling comfortableand secure in their new home.Thank you once again for taking care of them ... you obviously did a fab job."
