Why are there so many trees in Wallingford?
We are lucky! In the past 20years, thousands of trees have been planted around Wallingford by neighbors ontheir planting strips through a program called “It’s a Beautiful Day in theNeighborhood Tree Planting Project”. There are more than 500 baby trees (treesplanted in the last five years) that desperately need water.2.
What are our trees good for?
They make our air cleaner, they reduce ourcarbon footprint, they provide habitat for birds, they make shade, they make ushappy and healthy, some give us fruit, and they are beautiful!3.
Do we need to water if it rains?
Yes. Baby trees need to be watered every weekduring the summer. It is a great service project for teenagers and a great activityfor people who love a green Wallingford. Watering is also a great reason to walkaround the neighborhood with your friends, look at nature, and talk to yourneighbors.4.
What happens if I don’t water my trees?
Unlike older trees that have put outlonger roots, baby trees will die during this summer’s drought if they can’t get thewater they need. You can help them!5.
Can our trees be overwatered?
It is almost impossible to overwater a tree inthe summer unless you have an irrigation system that breaks.6.
When is the best time of day to water?
Late afternoon and evening. If youwork late, you could also water the first thing in the morning. Watering when it’sdarker out allows the trees to absorb more water because it doesn’t evaporate asquickly. Our Seattle Department of Transportation Volunteer Tree Steward NancyMerrill says to water when you take out the garbage on Thursday night. This is aneasy way to remember to water your trees weekly.7.
How much water do trees need?
Baby trees need about five gallons of wateronce a week. That is one or two big food storage buckets (you can sometimes getthese buckets inexpensively at Dick’s or other food vendors). Add an extra bucketor more when temperatures soar over 80 degrees.8.
What time of year do trees need to be watered?
From spring to fall. TreeSteward Nancy recommends starting when you adjust your clocks forward in thespring and stopping in the fall when you reset your clocks.9.
